The thing is, being a TV presenter or radio DJ, or whatever, is a job that many, many people would like to do and probably be quite good at. But we don’t actually need very many of them, compared to, say, nurses. So of course it’s difficult to get into, of course most people never get a foot in the door. That doesn’t mean it’s all about nepotism and who you know. It does mean that we need to stop lying to our kids that if they try hard enough they’ll get their dream. They might, but it’s much more likely they won’t.
I totally agree.
You don't have to totally rain on your kids' parade, but really, all this guff from schools and other people about 'if you want something enough, you will get it!" is really damaging. A bit of realism needs to be gently introduced.
My little daughter announced that her teacher had said pretty much this and I had to tell her that, although I'd love to have been a ballerina with the Royal Ballet, my lack of co-ordination and un-petite physique meant that that dream would never fly! Both my children have found success in their chosen line, but also, they've both been in the situation where an advertised job wasn't really open to all - a tough lesson for youngsters to learn.
