I'm looking for a new more modern dressing table as mine is over 30 yrs old and quite large and dark.
I'm going round in circles.
Anyone bought one recently and where from

I would love to have a proper dressing table!

Corcory · 07/11/2022 20:00

Don't have one anymore as we have a decent sized ensuite with a very large lite mirror and vanity unit.

Bogglebrain · 07/11/2022 20:01

I’ve enjoyed looking at everyone’s tables and can see why people like them but must admit I’m a sit on the edge of the bed type of gal (with a hand held magnifying mirror!). I don’t have a lot of makeup/no perfume/jewellery and rarely bother styling my hair so it would be wasted on me.

Snozwanger · 07/11/2022 20:01

I lusted after an IKEA Malm table for 14 years and finally got one last year when we redecorated our bedroom. I've got a Fancci LED mirror which is great for winter mornings, the rug is to protect the carpet from makeup spills and the stool is a solid pine one I got off Shpock that I painted and reupholstered.

Meant to add - I have bedside drawers so put what little I do have in them.

PicaK · 07/11/2022 20:08

I'm 49. Got this when I was about 25. It always seemed very streamlined compared to my Grandma's 1930s behemoth.
Can't imagine not having one but I don't dry my hair or wear make up. But just moved to a smaller house and chucked out a chest of drawers to keep this. Funny how conditioned you are.
Currently am cheerily waiting for knotty pine to come into fashion again ...which will probably be when I'm 90!

Don't have one myself, makeups in the bathroom cabinet.
best light and magnifying mirror in there too.

I love my dressing table! I used to have the IKEA one but found a gorgeous one 2nd hand in a vintage shop and couldn't resist. The lights are from Amazon

My DGM (who would be well over 90) had a dressing table very similar - same shame, same creamy colour with gilding but the draws were the same colour rather than darker. She has a matching chest of drawers.

One of my DC nabbed both when we were clearing out, assuring me that this pattern is sought after as a vintage buy. DC is decidedly under 90 as are the cool hip friends with dressing table envy 😀

BettyBoops · 07/11/2022 20:47

I have this one and love it! My DD has a mini version too 🥰

Since you asked @Davethecat2001. It used to take bulbs in the candle stick things but the wiring was that old 60s type that can't plug into modern sockets so now it has battery operated tea lights as I've never gotten round to having it re-wired. It's certainly not to everyone's taste but it has lovely memories of getting ready at it as a teenager when I went to stay with my gran.

i couldn’t survive without mine, I have two! The IKEA malm in my spare room with all my extra make up and this one from La Redoute in my bedroom with extra lights on top.

Love this thread and all the pics. I’ve not had a dressing table since I moved out of my parents’ house about 17 years ago and have been considering getting one for ages. My makeup and hair stuff is all over the place, and I detest getting ready over the sink in my tiny bathroom. But I wondered if they were too much of a teen girl thing! So the 90 year old comment was reassuring in a way 😂

Sunsetmom · 07/11/2022 22:31

Got mine from the Cotswolds company! its lovely and fab quality!
baffled by the 90 comment, I’m early 30s and had one for years and use it daily! Couldn’t be without one!!

Fufumcgoo · 06/11/2022 18:39

Are you 90? Surely nobody has a 'dressing table' anymore?

Really ? I have a beautiful one. Where do you do your make up etc?

threatmatrix · 07/11/2022 22:39

Couldn’t live without mine.

Yes just turned 90

Such strange responses. I love my dressing table and couldn't be without it.

Also just turned 90.

Can't help with the style though I'm afraid, OP, as mine is a beautiful old Art Deco one, definitely not modern.

Lots of choice out there though, hope you find one.

Cardiffwales · 07/11/2022 23:36

Too funny 😂. Just ordered one from John Lewis (also 90).

I have a very old fashioned glassed topped, kidney shaped dressing table that I have had since I was about 8 or 9 years old, so it is some 55 odd years old. I asked for it from Father Christmas - it was my main present from him that year - I loved it then, and I love it even more now! It has two reasonably sized drawers underneath it, and curtains that hide the drawers and legs. It has 3 mirrors, and the only things that have been updated on it are it's curtains.

If this thread is still open by the time I have reassembled it (since moving here), I will post a photo of it! I think it is safe to say that it is not the sort of thing that you are looking for OP, and once I am dead it will probably end up in recycling, but I would love it if my Granddaughter wanted it, but I don't want her to have it out of politeness sake! It is a bit big to be buried with me 🤭

I have a similar kidney shaped dressing table but the drawers are slightly different. It’s about 45 years old, bought with matching wardrobes. I was going to get rid of it all a few years ago and replace with ikea furniture. My daughter persuaded me to keep it, so I consigned it all to the box room, freshened it all up with French ivory paint and it looks quite good. A few months ago, I bought a small Alison Cork cocktail chair that fits nicely in the knee well.

I’m ashamed to say the box room has become a dumping ground at the moment and is on my ‘to-do’ list. I just need the oomph to start it. It would look lovely if I put my mind to it and tidied it up. I need to set myself some goals with realistic timeframes.

I did buy some ikea chests of drawers for my bedroom so I suppose I have best of both worlds - older and modern.

err - I still do my makeup in the bathroom mirror as it’s so bright in there 🙄

custardcreme77 · 08/11/2022 08:17

OP - thank you so much for this thread, I love it. ❤️

afrikat · 08/11/2022 08:39

My 6 year old daughter has one too, she loves it!
