AIBU to think this is not tat

Recently purchased this rather gorgeous glass and metal pineapple from our local charity shop. I love it, but DH thinks it's ugly tat. Obviously he's wrong and has no appreciation for it's beauty. Maybe you lovely MN'ers can settle this argument for me.

YANBU, it's divine.
YABU, it's tat.

Obviously I know what this answer is 😁...If anyone has one, or knows where it's from I'd be intrigued to know, I'm thinking TKMaxx.

I find your steadfast defense of this truly outrageous item of tat very endearing, OP.

Wishing you and your pineapple many happy days together.

One small suggestion is if you darkened your walls, painted the pine table, brought in some textural and acidic coloured soft furnishings etc to emphasise the dramatic colours, it might help contextualise the pineapple? Maybe some fairy lights and roughened silk swags? Exotic animal skins? A crushed velvet pouffe?

I think it’s already been painted and we’re looking at a home art project. If you look up “hobnail glass pineapples” on Google Images, there are some interesting ones, but nothing like OP’s (er, congrats, OP!). I suspect someone has married the top of a pineapple with a regular hobnail glass jar. Whether it’s worth squillions depends on whether Banksy did it or it was Ethel up the road. However for those who voted “YANBU,” there are a lot of options:

I have looked at it so long now, I have gone over to the dark side and decided it’s divine and I want one!

Welcome to the side of exquisite taste, it had to happen. Pictures of this beauty is radiating over this thread, drawing people in....

These are very reasonable suggestions.

Don't forget to post a photo after you've finished redecorating.

Suboptimalsitch · 05/11/2022 13:51

he'll have to walk past it constantly, like I do with his ugly burgandy Budha thing (in the front room, no less)

In that case you are entirely justified in installing it in the most prominent area of the house. A burgundy Buddha thing sounds far worse than a weirdly hued fruit ornament.

luckylavender · 05/11/2022 13:52

I'm team DH

Fluffydiamond · 05/11/2022 13:52

I think it's hideous but I generally don't like ornaments.

Thankyou, I'm sure we will, I do genuinely love it.

I was actually looking at a velvet pouffe in the charity shop the other day, but it was a mustard colour and had a wonky leg so I didn't bother.

It looks completely in keeping with a house with pink carpet and suede effect sofas.

It's fucking horrible

Nooo, it's fucking glorious.

I don't think anything which has been bought from a charity shop, second hand, can be classed as tat. Because it's second hand and already in existence so by buying it, you are not contributing to the piles of plastic stuff by convincing TK Maxx, Home Bargains or wherever that there is demand for this stuff. It's not my thing but if it makes you happy that is all that matters.

I volunteer in a charity shop and on Thursday I priced the ultimate tat. A mechanical white cat, dressed in a santa suit, which moved and played the MC Hammer classic "U Can't Touch This" when you pressed a button. Just WHY??? What goes through someone's head to come up with that?

Where is your charity shop and is the MC Hammer Santa Cat still available? Asking for a friend......😜

Not keen, and also, are you a swinger…

OldFan · 05/11/2022 14:00

Aww I think it's quite cheerful.

I can quite honestly say that I was completely unaware that pineapples represented swingers. I was going to put it in the middle of my bedroom windowsill at the front of the house but changed my mind, thank God!

I agree with your husband

Dogscanteatonions · 05/11/2022 14:02

Well unless you mean to display it upside down then it is tat 😉

Hayliebells · 05/11/2022 14:07

Definitely tat!

Notacompetitiveundereater · 05/11/2022 14:08

I love quirky stuff but that’s bad op. It is proper tat and taking stunt pineapple to a whole new level. 😂

personally I’d spray paint the glass base gold.

AltheaVestr1t · 05/11/2022 14:11

I think it's hideous. I do have a couple of friends who I know would love it though. If you love it, fair play! 😂

LikeTearsInRain · 05/11/2022 14:12

RosaMoline · 05/11/2022 12:31

Absolutely not tat! I love anything kitschy. Here is my 1950s cocktail trolley. I’d definitely display it proudly.

Wow that is a literal tray of tat in my eyes. Does it ever come out and drinks get made?

RosaMoline · 05/11/2022 14:18

@LikeTearsInRain - no, it’s literally ‘for show’
the dusting is a pita though.

Flobbertybillop · 05/11/2022 14:19

@ShinyS1 that made me laugh out loud. Probably a good decision

orbitalcrisis · 05/11/2022 14:21

The glass is awful. I rather like the top for some reason!

LizzieVereker · 05/11/2022 14:22

Tatastic

AmyDudley · 05/11/2022 14:22

I think you paid £7.99 to much for it.

But since you've bought it, you should probably just keep a pineapple in it (or pineapple chunks if you prefer)
