I think smokers are just so selfish

Not just because of the disgusting smell, but because of everything needing 10/15 mins advance notice.

'Yes I'm ready, just nipping out for a cigarette and then we can go' etc.

Really annoying.

nomoreflyingducks : “smokers do need somewhere to smoke”
No they don’t. It’s not like breathing air that needs to be done in order to stay alive.

QuestioningMyExistence · 04/11/2022 09:27

Constantly needing to go out and smoke too! Giving them a break from work/parenting that nonsmokers don’t get.

God forbid people have a break...? I have probably two cigarette breaks a day at work, amounting to about 10 minutes. I don't have children so I don't take all the time away that my colleagues do doing school runs, at home looking after poorly kids, etc. I don't judge those parents for taking time out of their work days, and I'd hope people wouldn't sneer at me for my 10 minutes outside.

Also to the PP who said "they are all awful" about smokers - are you alright? What an odd thing to say. I became addicted to nicotine during a deeply traumatic period of my life - it's an addiction, they happen, we aren't all hideous awful people. Have some decency.

AryaStarkWolf · 04/11/2022 11:24

oh fgs

houseonthehill · 04/11/2022 12:28

Regular breaks are excellent work practice. Hourly is best, apparently.

RealBecca · 04/11/2022 12:32

Its selfish to use land and resources to manufacture these products and make a profit from something that causes tremendous harm.

Take it up with the tobacco companies. Until they stop making them then people will smoke.

russetmellow · 04/11/2022 09:54

You really don't need to be too close to smell a smoker!

Well I hate people's body odour, stinky clothes, and busy body body behaviour. Best you step back from the smokers and then everyone can be happy.

LesterBiggott · 04/11/2022 13:16

you seem bizarrely invested in defending smokers. Why is that? As someone said earlier in the thread. maybe people are hitting a raw nerve. I also agree with a pp that there is nothing 'petty' about bashing smokers. They deserve it frankly

Why am I bizarrely invested? Why do you think that is🤨

It's not hitting a raw nerve with me. I don't care what anti smokers think about smokers. The self righteous of the anti smoker is quite funny though. All that rage. Won't make a blind bit of difference. If people want to smoke then they will. No matter what random mumsnetters have to say about that.

If you don't think it's petty bashing smokers because you think they deserve it, then fill your boots. I think you deserve the response that you get back. And the only thing that will have changed is, erm, nothing. Apart from your rising blood pressure that is, due to no control whatsoever over what other people choose to do. 😉

girlfriend44 · 04/11/2022 13:40

I don't understand why people want to smoke. Do they realise you absolutely stink and it lingers on you.
Much better when people walk by and you can smell their perfume/aftershave.
It looks awful when shop workers are smoking outside their work premises too on a break. Then you see them dragging furiously on the fag because they have got to get back inside to work.

SucreSalty · 04/11/2022 13:43

You sometimes can't avoid smelling smokers though. Lifts at work, bus or train to work, sitting in close desks, using the same WC or queueing for the same coffee machine or kettle. You come close enough unfortunately.
I do feel it's unfair how many breaks they take off work and they end up catching up on all the good gossip!

SucreSalty · 04/11/2022 13:46

I absolutely loathe the cloud of smoke in front of stations or shops. Horrible. I don't care if they smoked far away from traffic and walkers in a place where people don't need to pass them by although the smell later isn't great as it clings on hair and clothes.

Greenginghamdress · 04/11/2022 13:54

Smoking was much more socially acceptable 15-20 years ago before the indoor ban. I feel a bit sorry for smokers now. Certainly not a 'cool' thing to do anymore.

I don't know many smokers these days, my brother is though and a mum friend.
They are always going out for a smoke and seem to take ages every time. It ruins the flow of what you are doing (meal, drink, coffee, even a conversation).

When I first started 'real work' there were a group of 2/3 smokers and they got about an hour and a halfs extra break to everyone else each day due to cigarette breaks. Annoying, but more so that it got in the way of them doing their work.

I don't hate it though. I used to smoke myself a bit. When I worked behind a bar as a youngster (2004/05) the only way we could get a break was to have a smoke and also we used to get tipped in fags!

YANBU overall, I agree.

SMOKERS STINK!!!!!!!

Thepeopleversuswork · 04/11/2022 14:22

Selfish is definitely not the right word. It's a horrendous addiction to break.

That said I agree with you about the way this debilitating addiction impacts on everyone else.

My ex husband is a heavy smoker and we couldn't do ANYTHING without him having to have at least three fags in the garden before leaving the house. Then another one on the way (which he'd have to drop behind me in order for my daughter not to see). Then if we ever went for a me. And that's before you have thought about the smell.

I don't judge people for being smokers but I do find the huge handicap their addiction imposes on others extremely tiresome.

I wish we could, but the smell lingers. It gets everywhere in a way that even BO doesn't.

Of course it's hit a raw nerve. Do you have any idea how angry and defensive you sound?

Do you have any idea of how silly you sound 😂. Imagine thinking you can get people to stop smoking by name calling on the internet. I'm not angry. Because I really genuinely do not give a shit. Especially from random anti smokers online. But you sound angry. And it bothers you. Because as much as you would like to force people to stop smoking, ultimately, there's not a single thing you can do about it. I'm surprised you're investing so much time into something that's going to be a dead end tbh. Go chill out with a nice cuppa and a fag. 🚬 ☕

girlfriend44 · 04/11/2022 16:15

Smoking ages you.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 16:18

I don't think anyone imagines this thread will stop anyone smoking. If all it took to quit was being told online how disgusting and smelly it is, that would be offered as a solution via the NHS and it would have a good success rate.

The question is whether it's selfish and some people think it is, because the smell is deeply unpleasant and lingers everywhere.

Monoprix · 04/11/2022 16:18

Smoking is rooted in this dumb, teenage mentality that it will make you a grown-up. Smoking, early sex and drinking does not turn you into a grown-up magically. It just makes you a dumb, gullible person who has no idea about the realities of life because you are still a child, no matter how hard you try and conceal it. You are immature enough to buy into this idea that if a fag is hanging out of your mouth you are suddenly a cool adult and your equally immature peers will accept you.
Because most people start smoking as teenagers. And by the time they realise it’s stupid and harmful, it’s too late because a habit has already been formed and developed into a full blown addiction.

It ages some people. Not me. Good genes I guess :-) Some people look far older than their actual age without even having smoking as an excuse.

😂 I think this is genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever read on this site. It causes permanent cell damage, it's ageing you whether you can see it yet or not.

You do understand that age isn't just how you look, right? You might appear fine on the surface but your body is being irrevocably damaged.

catandcoffee · 04/11/2022 16:52

There's nothing worse than an ex-smoker 😀

I'm sure I'm rotting from the inside out. Nothing for you to worry about though :-)
