Full tin, plus one slice of ubuttered whole meal smooshed into it

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 01/11/2022 13:10

1/2 tin for me. I do have a couple of pitta slices with it though. No way I could manage a whole tin

I'm just waiting for all the competitive under eaters to come on and talk about how they are stuffed after half a tin of soup and how we've lost sight of a normal portion size these days 😂

I always eat a whole tin of soup with one or two slices of bread.

100%

I always feel threads like this are started for people to brag about how little they eat to feel full and anyone who dares eat more are disgusting and greedy.

sugarrosepetal · 01/11/2022 13:10

One tin for an adult and half a tin for a child. Less if it's concentrated and your adding milk of water to it to thin it out. (I'm a big girl though so this may not suit everyone).

@Daisy62

Are IKEA bowls special?

inappropriateraspberry · 01/11/2022 13:11

I'm a two thirds person! A whole tin is too much, but half is no way near enough!

My regular lunch, (not the main meal of the day), is a tin of soup and two small bread rolls. Just about right portion wise.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/11/2022 13:11

I eat about 500 ml of soup in one go as that's what my bowl holds.
If it's thin soup I'll have bread as well.
Anyone having half a tin is just having it as a starter surely?

InsertPunHere · 01/11/2022 13:11

My gran used to serve half a ton per person but it always came with butties on the side, not just soup for lunch.

half a TIN, not half a ton

It's not really MN unless you say...

I have no idea as I make my own soup and would never get it from a tin. But I would expect about 3/4 of a cereal bowl as a meal.

Ah! but what size cereal bowl???

I'm now off to have a tin of tomato soup with garlic bread!

We'd have a can each. My kids have tomato soup in a mug with a bit grated cheese as a snack, that's half a can each. It's not lunch!

Also good with garlic naan

I don't agree that MN is full of competitive undereaters and when I ask for examples I never get any.
However, I am one of those people who believe portions these days are too big, but I still eat a whole can of soup in one go :)

meatyryvita · 01/11/2022 13:13

Most of the soups we have are veg-packed and so I tend to have about a can and the kids tend to have 2/3 of a can. We have it with bread/toast too. Plenty of veg and some good starchy carbs make a great lunch.

half a TIN, not half a ton

🤣 I did this once when talking about food guidelines in pregnancy and said I know I can have four tons of tuna per week 🤣

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 01/11/2022 13:13

When I was a kid we would have two tins between 5 of us, watered down to make it go further. I remember my portions barley covering the bottom of the bowl. we were very under fed as children.

Half a tin isn’t enough for most people.

Loachworks · 01/11/2022 13:14

I can eat half of a tin and I have a condition that stops me eating (I 'eat' baby sized portions and weigh 40kg.) Unless it's a light snack no it's not a portion.

Beowulfa · 01/11/2022 13:14

My partner and I regularly share a tin of soup for lunch at a weekend. He has quite a lot of bread with it; I have cheese, pickled onion and some crisps. Never occurred to me to eat the whole tin at once, but I prefer small portions.

I grow veg and make a lot of my own soup, but still love classic Heinz vegetable.

BlueMongoose · 01/11/2022 13:14

Half a standard tin ought to be plenty, if you're having bread etc., and maybe some cheese as well if it's a meal rather than a snack. It wouldn't occur to me to serve more, though if I had guests I might do enough for 'seconds' in case anyone wanted more. Doesn't the tin say how many servings it expects a tin to be?
Reading this thread, I do wonder if maybe larger plates in general are part of the problem of larger portions of things across the board, and as a consequence, some people putting on too much weight.

No, but my IKEA ones are slightly bigger than my other bowls - my other bowls don’t quite fit the full tin!

I could easily manage a whole tin. it's not exactly a MASSIVE portion, is it?

Just though 1/2 a tin was the serving size <shrug>

PinkButtercups · 01/11/2022 13:15

YABU it's a liquid.

I'd say a tin each unless they're small children.

Topsyturvy78 · 01/11/2022 13:15

We used to get pies from a local bakery and have tomato soup over one.😋😋😋 It's weird I can't eat a bowl full of it on its own but love it over a pie.
