as in 200g of soup

with bread and butter etc.

that's a normal size, right?

Friend heats a tin each for her family

Half a tin would be a diet portion imo - even with bread. Saying that some people just have smaller/bigger appetites. If half a tin plus bread fills everyone in your family up then why have a full tin just because someone else does.

MultiTulip · 01/11/2022 12:59

It’s 100 calories, it’s clearly not a full meal.

MayFlower22 · 01/11/2022 12:59

Yes it's a portion op - for my three year old.

Lunde · 01/11/2022 12:59

Half a tin of Heinz Lentil soup is less than 100 cals - so not really a meal

SporkAndMonday · 01/11/2022 12:59

Lob some croutons in to posh it up

Topsyturvy78 · 01/11/2022 13:00

I do a tin between two adults. But usually have a sandwich as well. It depends on the age of the children. Half a tin would be too much for a young child. No wonder we have an obesity problem.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 01/11/2022 13:00

Growing up it was half a tin each with one slice of un buttered bread. Should be okay for a childs lunch if they have had breakfast.

LBFseBrom · 01/11/2022 13:00

I usually have one tin to myself.

Blibbleflibble · 01/11/2022 13:00

I'd be happy with half a tin if I had a lovely big sandwich to dip.

However if I'm just getting a round or two of buttered toast, I vote full tin.

Jenasaurus · 01/11/2022 13:00

I have a whole 500g of this soup for lunch and I am losing weight, its only 32 cal per 100g and as a meal 200g would be just 64 cals for my lunch (cant have carbs so no bread)

Half a tin is absolutely fine for a child. It's not designed to be served with a sandwhich.

justasking111 · 01/11/2022 13:01

My mum back in the day would augment heinz tomato soup with dumplings to fill up three hungry kids. We thought it a treat looking back it was cheap and filled us up. It was a two mile walk every day whatever the weather. So we were cold and hungry. Cocoa awaiting us spurred us on

SporkAndMonday · 01/11/2022 13:02

It's too liquidly to eat much more than half a tin

takealettermsjones · 01/11/2022 13:02

I really want soup now.

Goes in search of a (full) tin

Gloryofthe80s · 01/11/2022 13:03

Yawn. This again. Biscuit

MerryMarigold · 01/11/2022 13:05

It's not really MN unless you say...

I have no idea as I make my own soup and would never get it from a tin. But I would expect about 3/4 of a cereal bowl as a meal.

Unglamorousgranny · 01/11/2022 13:06

Garlic bread instead of normal bread is lovely.
If it's lunch then half a tin will do. However, if it's going to be our main evening meal as we haven't got time/too lazy to cook a proper meal then it has to be a can each

maddiemookins16mum · 01/11/2022 13:06

It’s 2022, people eat a full pizza per person, 10 fishfingers each, a tin of soup each, etc etc. Our appetites (eyes) are bigger. Gone are the days of a tin of soup feeding 2 (or in my case, mum and three kids).
It’s not wrong, per se, it’s just different to what is used to be. One of my favourite ever posts on here was the Mum, dad and two kids (under 12), who thought that 2 tins of beans (800 grams total), 12 potato waffles and 16 sausages was normal for their evening meal.

ZealAndArdour · 01/11/2022 13:06

Not this again. Can’t wait for that woman to turn up on the thread who proudly shares one tin of soup between herself and two adult men.

Mulhollandmagoo · 01/11/2022 13:07

I have a full tin, but I really don't like buttered bread with soup - I don't know why 😂so two slices of unbuttered bread here.

A580Hojas · 01/11/2022 13:07

Lol at "it's not designed to be served with a sandwich" !

And this is a problem to you why?

Daisy62 · 01/11/2022 13:08

A tin of Heinz tomato fits perfectly in my IKEA bowls, and does me for lunch (my lighter meal) with a thick slice of bread and butter. If it was a homemade soup full of potato or whatever, I might not have the bread, depending on how hungry I was.

SkylightSkylight · 01/11/2022 13:08

LuciferRising · 01/11/2022 12:44

I would eat a whole tin, however, I am absolutely convinced the adults in my family would have eaten a tin between them back in the day.

@LuciferRising

you're probably right!

im 53, when I was a child we definitely had half a tin each. Depending on who was having what flavour. It varied a bit. I went to a friends for lunch as a young adult & there was quite a bit of confusion (too hard to explain) but she was giving her young kids (about 2&4) a whole tin each & obviously she was having a whole tin too (plus toast, kids having toast too). I thought it was way too much for the kids, (still do) and too much for an adult.

now it seems like a normal serving to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I guess it's what you get used to.

InsertPunHere · 01/11/2022 13:09

A full tin of soup and I don’t generally bother with bread, or maybe one slice for dipping if it’s not a chunky soup.

Soup is lush. I’m always in the mood for soup once it gets a little cooler outside.
