as in 200g of soup

that's a normal size, right?

I would eat a whole tin, however, I am absolutely convinced the adults in my family would have eaten a tin between them back in the day.

ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2022 12:44

We do both depending on what we've eaten that day or what it's served with. Funnily enough we had soup for dinner last night and I did half a tin each as we each had a cheese sandwich on the side. We'd do half a tin with bread and butter if we were having a quick lunch and planning a bigger dinner later on but normally I'd say a tin each for adults and half a tin would be a child's portion.

junglejane66 · 01/11/2022 12:45

Have a tin is fine, if you're a mouse or competitive non-eater

Are you a borrower op?

Yes, yes I am. You spotted me - damn it, now I have to go and hide behind the Mantelpiece and move somewhere else now.

Heinz do 300g tins in the more popular flavours. They are the perfect size.

JustLyra · 01/11/2022 12:48

A full tin of Heinz tomato and 3 slices of bread is 459 calories. I aim for around 450 cals for lunch.

we tend to do 3/4 of a tin each if we’re all having it. 3 tins does the 4 of us.

NC12345665 · 01/11/2022 12:48

1/2 a tin each!? And bread?! And butter?! Shock Absolutely grim. Even my athletic strapping great 6ft son couldn't eat that in one go.

steff13 · 01/11/2022 12:48

I think it depends on the soup, too. A creamy soup like tomato isn't going to be as filling as, say, vegetable beef soup.

DuoLingoMakesMeBingo · 01/11/2022 12:49

No I think a tin is an adult portion.

Simonjt · 01/11/2022 12:49

Half a tin and two slices of bread here would be a snack, my seven year old would need more than that for his lunch.

This is mumsnet so one tin and a slice of bread betwen a family of four is probably considered ample remember!

Also mumsnet where adults need to ask the internet questions that even a child can answer 😁

Who bases their soup quantity on what other people have? Do you have a condition that means you can't tell how hungry you are and whether you're full?

AriettyHomily · 01/11/2022 12:49

I'm now off to have a tin of tomato soup with garlic bread!

We'd have a can each. My kids have tomato soup in a mug with a bit grated cheese as a snack, that's half a can each. It's not lunch!

My family certainly did, but as a starter before the main meal. A chance to fill up on cheap bread before the more expensive main.

Floralnomad · 01/11/2022 12:51

For a meal a whole tin with bread ,

Summerfun54321 · 01/11/2022 12:54

How much you need to eat depends on how much you exercise and how big you are. It’s not a one size fits all. Did you know humans also have different clothing sizes and different shoe sizes? Saying “this is an adult portion of food” is like saying “these pair of jeans fits all adults”. Bonkers.

EvilRingahBitch · 01/11/2022 12:54

Heinz chicken soup is 50 calories per 100 grammes, which is pretty normal for tinned soup. So 200 grammes/100 calories with bread and butter would be a very light lunch for an adult - though if you had it with a cheese sandwich like some posters it would be a decent size lunch depending on your age and size.

shumway · 01/11/2022 12:55

Don't think I've had just half a tin since I was a child.

KettrickenSmiled · 01/11/2022 12:55

What is this obsession with other people's food choices all about?
Is this going to turn into yet another drearily predicatble competitive under-eating thread?

If you want to eat half a can of soup - your meal portion is half a can of soup.
If you want to eat a whole can of soup - your meal portion is a whole can of soup.
If your friend wants to eat soup - her meal portion is precisely none of your business.

Well we are proper fatties who do like to stuff ourselves silly every time we have soup

MyRiverThee · 01/11/2022 12:55

Why do you care how much soup your friend and her family eat? Just eat what you want and let your friend do the same.

How do people get through life if they have to get opinions on stuff like this? And if we all say she’s eating too much soup, what then? Or if everyone says, you are not eating enough soup, will you change your soup eating habits to fit in with ‘normal’?

Although we do have our tomato soup with garlic bread instead of normal bread Halo

Cheesy garlic bread is even better.

SporkAndMonday · 01/11/2022 12:57

Yeah, they sell them in smaller tins which are one portion.

Maybe they just really like soup.

sheepdogdelight · 01/11/2022 12:57

For a light lunch or for people with small appetites - that's fine.

I'd want more for a main meal.

You used to be able to get 3/4 size tins - I always thought they were perfect because half a tin is not enough and a tin is too much! (I would also normally have cheese with my bread).

And what you eat at other meals. We have a decent sized bowl of porridge or eggs on toast for breakfast, then a filling dinner, so lunch is light.

i said in OP...

Half a tin/200g.

We have 2 slices of bread and butter from a 'normal' sandwich loaf, or maybe a roll with butter.

I’d have the full tin of soup and 1 slice of bread, healthier option?
