They think a tin is a portion, because that's what fits into our large soup bowls these days. It's like people have an urge to fill the container, no matter the size.

so you DO think that 200 calories of soup is gluttonous.

Do you serve dinner on side plates too?

....no. 🙄

Just that I always think that you had half a tin of soup at a time

@Kteeb1 "that's how mumsnet works. People ask questions and then other people comment on them."

So why ask me why I posted? Confused

1/2 can of the soup I have in the cupboard is 94 calories. Even with a slice of toast that's not enough for my lunch.
I always have a full can plus bread, or make my own and have a massive bowl.
I am not fat.

maybe.

But a Tin of Heniz "Big Soup" is the same calories as a tin of Heinz Tomato Soup. it's the same size tin.

In fact its lower in calories.... Chicken and veg "big soup" is 200 cals, Tomato soup is 220...

So I'm not sure what your 'logic'i is there?

Why would a tin of soup that has chunky veg in it with fewer calories be considered portion, but a pureed soup with more not..?

it's all in people's heads!

This happened at work, we used to have big cereal type bowls at the soup station for a free lunch. Then they refurbished the canteen and bought new nicer crockery, which happened to have smaller bowls. People took a "full bowl" of soup and the kitchen discovered they had way too much left over than before.

You seem to be deliberately provocative on this subject, trying to froth people up 🙄

A thick, chunky soup might be considered more of a portion than a thinner soup as it fills you up more. Your comparison is weak as tomato soup is a whopping 8 calories more per tin. Whoop de do.

The thicker, more substantial soup will be more satisfying than a thin soup despite the calories, for most people I know anyway.

Why would a tin of soup that has chunky veg in it with fewer calories be considered portion, but a pureed soup with more not..?

If you can't see why that might be, I can't help you.

00100001 · 06/11/2022 15:57

Frothing people up by daring to imply the lumps of mushy veg in one time of soup is as much of a portion as the pureed veg in the second tin.

Having watched this thread since it's inception, I succumbed and had soup for tea.
It was a whole tin of chicken soup with 2 bread rolls on the side.
I shared some with my cat, who is currently dunking her paw in trying to get the last bits of chicken.
Therefore my contribution is thus :- more than half, but less than a whole tin plus 2 rolls or slices of bread.

missb10 · 06/11/2022 21:59

Yeah, on most tins of 400g soup it says "2 portions". Also, on a packet of 2 vegeburgers it says "2 portions". I don't think that half a tin of soup or one vegeburger would be enough to eat though. I suppose it's meant to be a portion with other stuff for a meal, but who knows what to have with it? It would be good if they put more meal suggestions on the packet.

MasterBeth · 06/11/2022 22:10

I am quite a greedy fucker, but would only ever eat half a tin (or naice plastic carton) of shop-bought soup. With lots of bread.

lljkk · 06/11/2022 22:18

I generally don't like bread with my soup.
If I want soup, I want soup.
Not a huge portion of bread & 4 tastes of soup.
I hate how in a restaurant if you order soup you get a big chunk of tastless bread & a tiny bit of too salty soup that would fit in a small mug.
I am into making my own soup nowadays, I've got a litre jug full downstairs of soup that is pumpkin+onion+random sauces + butter mix, which will probably be lunch tomorrow. Maybe that means 1000 ml is a single person soup portion to me. it's 2 large bowl fulls.

And sod the 200 kcal is a whole meal idea. Feck that off to feckity feck.

Lilyhatesjaz · 06/11/2022 22:36

When I am on a diet I eat half a tin and 2 slices of bread no butter

Florenz · 06/11/2022 22:42

People have lost sight of what healthy portions of food are, plus people live more sedentary lives now. Half a tin plus bread or toast is more than enough unless you work a physical job or walk a long way to work.

Dinner plates are too large too, the plates of 40 years ago were much smaller, not as small as modern side plates but closer to that size than some of the giant dinner plates I see around.

Hagpie · 06/11/2022 22:45

Normally I’m not a massive eater but canned soup doesn’t really fill me. I eat a whole tin and have about 6 slices of bread before I get fed up of getting up to butter more. Usually ends with an early dinner or snacks if I’m honest.

That’ll be because a full tin is c. 200 calories. That’s not a big meal for anyone.

deciding to consume 200 calories of soup rather than 100 doesn’t make anyone a glutton.

Even if they have bread with it.

Florenz · 06/11/2022 23:25

It isn't supposed to be a big meal. It's a light lunch. It wouldn't be the main meal of the day. If you hadn't eaten breakfast it wouldn't be enough.

LoveMyCats1 · 06/11/2022 23:49

For a small child it's probably fine.

100 calories is not a ‘light lunch’. It’s a small snack.

Not me.

Well it's not like it's difficult to think about what to have with a veggie burger, really, is it?

You have 1 party, in a bun, with cheese/onions/salads/sauces etc as you wish, serve it with anything else you wants , salad, coleslaw, potato salad, corn on the vin, on its own....

Why should they need to have meal suggestions???
