I have a whole tin but I don't have bread with it

FatAntelope · 01/11/2022 12:37

People eat different amounts, have different metabolisms, do different amounts of exercise and have different appetites.

Also some families may have a big lunch and a little a lighter dinner and visa versa.

So...so what if they have more than you?

daffodilandtulip · 01/11/2022 12:38

We use two tins between three of us (1 adult and 2 teens).

ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty · 01/11/2022 12:38

My kids (6 and 10) are happy to share a tin but I can’t imagine that would be enough for an adult. For a light lunch/ afternoon snack it would be ok but definitely not a meal.

Why have I never tried this!?

It’s honestly amazing, really good for a cheap filling meal too (we get the 32p garlic baguettes, so half one of those and a tin of soup is good for even a dinner)

Kendodd · 01/11/2022 12:39

I think the idea of half a tin is imaging it as a starter. As a starter, it would be plenty. As a meal, a whole tin.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 01/11/2022 12:39

DH and I have just finished lunch, 1 tin of Heinz tomato soup shared and 1 slice each of cheese on toast. Fine as a lunch time snack but we don’t have big appetites I could totally see people eating any of the other combinations mentioned depending on age/sex/appetite as normal

a standard sized tin is going to be 400g ( or near enough)

I'm back from the kitchen, and sightly shocked to say, you're right. Except for the Campbell's condensed, which are much less (but would definitely be half a tin per person when uncondensed).

What wizardry is this?

Willbe2under2 · 01/11/2022 12:40

We have half a tin each with a couple of dinner rolls and butter for a light lunch, probably with some fruit and crisps on the side. I'm not sure I could eat a whole tin - not because it would fill me up, but because I'd get bored and find it to be too much of one thing iyswim. So half a tin with other bits works best for us.

BlueBar · 01/11/2022 12:40

If it's a meal, rather than a starter, definitely a whole tin and I'm someone who's often shocked at how big other people's portions are!

Physics, innit.

Half a tin with two slices of bread would be a lunch or a starter but not dinner, unless you'd been out for Sunday lunch.

FlorettaB · 01/11/2022 12:40

Half would be a starter (a small one) or a child’s portion.

CraneBoysMysteries · 01/11/2022 12:41

YABVU
Half a tin for kiddies maybe but as a meal then a full tin each. With fresh white bread and tonnes of butter please

Ohhh I want soup for lunch now

I would be happy with this.

TheLeadbetterLife · 01/11/2022 12:41

This is Mumsnet, so half the posts on this thread will predict that everyone else will claim "a thimbleful is enough for me for a month", chortle chortle.

Even though almost no-one is actually a competitive under-eater.

Topgub · 01/11/2022 12:42

We'd have a full tin

I might split a tin for the kids

Why do you care what your friend does?

generalh · 01/11/2022 12:42

Does it matter? Everyone decides for themselves surely?

35965a · 01/11/2022 12:43

Half a tin isn’t enough for an adult. My 8yo eats almost a full tin with a couple of slices of bread and he is thin.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 01/11/2022 12:43

Even as I child I had a whole tin with 4 slices of bread and butter!

Half a tin would achieve nothing here.

Stoatally · 01/11/2022 12:43

Annoyingly I think 3/4 a tin is the right portion size for my Heinz tomato soup loving kid. Half is definitely too little for a main meal.

FlorettaB · 01/11/2022 12:43

Fresh soup often comes in 600g containers and that is two portions for me, so two thirds of a can would be about right.

Freetodowhatiwant · 01/11/2022 12:43

A full tin! Even for my kids.

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 01/11/2022 12:43

Are you a borrower op?

Mischance · 01/11/2022 12:44

Half a can for me here - ample with bread and butter.
