In anticipation of the way this thread will go

Half a time AND bread and butter - OMG if I ate that I would be full for a WEEK - that's too much food - I eat a tin of soup over 4 days and no bread - I'm 5ft 4" and a size 2 - teeny tiny me

In the real work - a tin is fine per person ffs - it's soup not melted lard

😂😂😂

thelobsterquadrille · 01/11/2022 13:16

I'd have the entire tin with two slices of toasted sourdough with butter.

And now I want soup 🙈

Garysmum · 01/11/2022 13:16

Half a tin of the soup I normally eat is what 100-120 calories. Not exactly a meal. A meal is a whole tin.

Topgub · 01/11/2022 13:17

It will have a suggested setting size on it.

If you actually care (who the fuck would?!) Then read the tin.

TIN. Not can.

We used to get pies from a local bakery and have tomato soup over one.😋😋😋 It's weird I can't eat a bowl full of it on its own but love it over a pie.

Like extreme tomato sauce?

Dutchesss · 01/11/2022 13:17

Of course it's enough.... as a starter.

takealettermsjones · 01/11/2022 13:18

Just because the tin says 'serves 2' that doesn't mean it's necessarily intended to be a whole meal for two people on its own, or that that will be the case for every person. People need different amounts of calories, feel hungrier at different times, etc.

The whole "portion sizes are now abnormally big, this is why more people are overweight" rhetoric is not actually helpful to anyone 🙄

I do a tin between two adults. But usually have a sandwich as well. It depends on the age of the children. Half a tin would be too much for a young child. No wonder we have an obesity problem.

Half a tin would not be too much for a young child.

Recommended calories for a 5 year old is 1,400-1,500

half a tin of soup is 200 calories

This sounds amazing. Crucially, what flavour pie?!

Mumtobe2305 · 01/11/2022 13:20

I have a whole tin to myself personally

viques · 01/11/2022 13:21

So I am the only person who heats a bit of oil in a frying pan and cuts my slice of bread into squares to make fried bread squares croutons. Bit of sea salt on the fried bread squares croutons, a dash of chilli oil on the soup, possibly a bit of grated cheese in the bowl too. It’s almost like being in a posh caff bistro.

LucilleLovelace · 01/11/2022 13:22

Surely it depends on each person's appetite?

My elderly mum can only manage a small 300ml can of soup.
I'd find 400mls pretty heavy going. A good 'mug' is around 250mls.

But your friend is BU for buying tinned soup!

Fresh is better and home made is the best!

Perverted.

(extremely curious to know what you did with the other pie/pies.)

mam0918 · 01/11/2022 13:23

I have a whole tin of normal soup and pretty much a half to a whole loaf (probably only half now but in my teens I;d easily finish a whole loaf but I was severally underweight back then, not so much now lol).

I hate it when theres just 1 slice of bread or a tiny roll, soup is basicly a drink it the bread that makes it a bulky meal option lol.

Those big heavy chunky ASDA 600g plastic carton ones beat me everytime though, theres too much in them.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 01/11/2022 13:24

Half a tin is tiny, but it is a portion size. Half a tub of soup is also tiny but a more generous portion size.

I usually have a slice of bread (unbuttered) but a smaller slice so e.g. Vogel.

takealettermsjones · 01/11/2022 13:25

Bingo!

Michellexxx · 01/11/2022 13:25

I have half as a portion too. Definitely enough for kids with bread too.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 01/11/2022 13:25

Depends if you're feeding children or adults.

Or ragingly hungry teenagers.

If adults, then definitely a whole tin. If teenagers, then two tins plus a sandwich.

Bestcatmum · 01/11/2022 13:26

Half a tin is only enough if you are having it as a starter before a main course. If the soup is a meal then it's a whole can.

mam0918 · 01/11/2022 13:26

I assume the 'serves' two means as a light appitizer before the main course... soup has always been a classic light starter rather than a main in resteraunts and dinner parties.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 01/11/2022 13:26

My nana used to have a cup a soup for lunch but in a bowl with toast on the side, 1 slice.

She was just under 5ft though and size 6-8 or maybe even a 4. She did eat 2 digestive biscuits and I think cereal in the morning and a proper meal in the evening, plus cake in the afternoons (with other residents in privately owned flats). However, she also had osteoperosis, maybe not enough calcium/fruit/veg?

User17956743 · 01/11/2022 13:27

Whole tin of Heinz and similar size tins, half of the 600g pots of Yorkshire Provinder, I'm sure Heinz tins have got smaller over the years

RambamThankyouMam · 01/11/2022 13:27

Wouldn't even touch the sides.

sunshineandshowers40 · 01/11/2022 13:29

I have a whole to myself and I'm not a big eater. Would probably have one slice of bread and butter too.

Flyinggeesei234 · 01/11/2022 13:29

My theory is that they always put a tiny serving size on the tins/packaging so that the salt etc levels don’t look astronomical.

But in the real world, of course 1/2 tin is ridiculously small for a portion, even for a young child.
