To not understand the nastiness that being a housewife provokes

1000 replies

AMorningstar · 30/10/2022 17:43

Not just on MN. I don't even use MN that often but I see this on other social media websites too. If a woman shares something positive about being a housewife it's full of comments about how "being controlled by a man, couldn't be me!" "No thanks, I love my independence" or "just wait until he leaves you, then what". If a woman shares something negative about it its "see, this is why being a housewife is TERRIBLE" (yet no one would say "this is why having a career is terrible!" If a person was complaining about their job)

I saw someone earlier say they'd be devastated if their daughter wanted to be a SAHM.

Why does it provoke such vitriol? Other women choosing this doesn't force anyone else to, I don't get the complete lack of respect for people's decisions and lack of understanding that different people enjoy different things.

Honestly OP I’d just give up now. You can argue til you’re blue in the face and many posters will only see you as some lazy handmaiden whose purpose in life is to watch Holly & Phil.

Determined to see me and other housewives as one dimensional to justify their irrational dislike of us.

"Most people don't pick their kids up at 3pm" etc..

To someone who said you can work and do that...talk about taking things out of context

Guess what. Many many men all of this too nowadays. My DH does the school run 3 days a week and works for a city firm. I manage a team and some of them are mothers like me. We do a lot, but we can fit all in around our kids and still finish work on time.

Times have changed. Presenteeism isn't performance.

Ok it my question still stands - if you or your DH are leaving work at 2.30-3 how is that a full time job? When are you making the hours up?

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 30/10/2022 23:16

Constantly, by the sounds of it 😆

Everyone on MN works full time 70 hours a week but still has time to go on spa days and fulfil their hobbies, do the school run and have a glass of wine in the evening after making six figures a week Wink

They might work from home. I know several parents who do the school run and then go back to work for a bit longer.

Puppers · 30/10/2022 23:16

Some of these comments 🙄

It's perfectly OK not to be ambitious. It's OK to not think paid employment is fulfilling.

There are a lot of PPs who can't see beyond the end of their own nose and simply cannot comprehend that not everyone shares their views on what life is all about.

Topgub · 30/10/2022 23:17

@Puppers

Including the op

Everydayaschoolday · 30/10/2022 23:17

My lifestyle very closely reflects the OP’s. I describe myself as a housewife. It suits DH and I, we’re a team. I have not always been a housewife but we’re very comfortable with our arrangement. I’m always pleased to see women doing well in successful careers, but I also see a lot of overwhelm of ‘juggling it all’.

I don't want anyones validation, thanks. I want people to stop spreading vitriol. Over sharing doesn't exisy btw, if you don't like what I post you can click off at any time. You're a big girl I'm sure you know how to log off by yourself

Yeah you do, that’s the whole point of the thread. if it wasn’t bothering you, why start it, I do plenty of shit folks wouldn’t agree with, doesn’t bother me remotely and I don’t give a shit, so I’d never even consider starting a thread on it. Why would I, I don’t give a shit.

And yes it’s over sharing, just because we are all reading it and not logging off, What is it 11 million folks on here? Doesn’t mean the fact you’re on line arguing with people. Telling them millions and millions of people about you and your husbands porn use, your fetishs, the fact you are in your twenties and never want to work a day in your life , that your father paid the deposit on your house, that your husband now pays the mortgage and for everything, isn’t over sharing. It is.

Why the fuck do women always have to be a ‘role model to young girls’.

In any event, she’s doing what makes her happy - pretty good message to send IMO.

I have 4 girls - so I clearly see the importance of good role models for them, both male and female. I don’t think the importance of good parental role models can be over- estimated for both boys and girls. I have seen this both in personal and work life.

Walkaround · 30/10/2022 23:21

AMorningstar · 30/10/2022 22:51

Men don't get asked if they're role models to young boys, or if their careers are helping men as a group, or if they represent all men. Men get to just live.

Not true. Schools ask men to come into school to read with their children so that boys can have male role models showing them that reading is something men can get pleasure from, too. There is also regular talk about a lack of male role models for children living in households with a single mother, and lack of male role models in primary schools. Men do not get to just live - they are constantly judged, particularly by women. If men prefer to be SAHH, then women (on Mumsnet) often call them cocklodgers, or workshy.

You might as well face it, women are capable of being be unpleasant and judgemental - basically nasty - and belittling is a common technique some women use against each other, because they enjoy the sense of power and control it gives them to demean others and inform them of their inferiority and weakness.

Sure. Sure.

The op started the thread and got exactly what they wanted

(I haven't read the full thread, I've read all the others)

The not me guv act is wearing thin.

I’m not sure she wanted to be insulted but OK.

In theory this thread could have been a civilised discussion about values placed on employment vs values placed on ‘wife work’. And how that impacts peoples viewpoint. But instead the mud slinging started fairly quick and it wasn’t started by the OP.

No, Fairy, that's just not true. You clearly do give a 💩, in fact, several!!!!!You sound bitter, resentful and harping. A rather unattractive combination.

SofiaSoFar · 30/10/2022 23:09

You've clearly got no idea of the world of work that many of us inhabit, have you.

Still, why would you know...

No I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a ‘full time job’ that’s actually just 15 hours and pays £100k+. Sounds like MLM nonsense to me. Unless you can enlighten me as to what this Unicorn job is?

MsPincher · 30/10/2022 23:24

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 30/10/2022 23:01

I agree with this. I would be very disappointed, but I know my daughters won't choose that path.

I really can’t get past this train of thought. It’s actually quite sad.

Some people’s kids are addicted to drugs, or steal for a living, or in prison - there are very few things which would make me ‘very disappointed’ in my kids and being SAHM is certainly not one of them.

Also you have no idea what they’ll do when they have kids, but I really hope you would support them and keep your judgement to yourself.

i don’t think it’s sad at all. I want my daughters to achieve in education and work as well as having a family. They’re both smart and spending 50 years doing domestic chores would not be what I would want for them.

I wouldn’t be overly pleased if they chose not to bother working at all same as I would if they were sons. I might not be disappointed but I wouldn’t be very proud either

Topgub · 30/10/2022 23:24

Thats just a fact it’s not saying OP thinks she is superior.

Worriedddd · 30/10/2022 23:26

It's very risky not to have your own independent earnings. I've seen many men have a mid life crisis and dump their 40-50 year old something wife and hide the assets. They are forced to get a minimum wage job and have a massive decrease in living standards. It's a gamble 50 percent of marriages end in divorce.

😂😂 it doesn’t seem it!

Meanwhile on planet Earth, most people who work full time work 9-5 and stick their kids in after school club or other childcare. Including me until recently - I hated it, the kids hated it and if I did ever leave to be at school for 3.30pm then I’d have to work on the evenings to make the time up, which meant working til 10pm some nights.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 30/10/2022 23:29

And obviously a much worthier dinner party guest than anyone who (shocked whisper) is a housewife 🤓
