Sunday dinner ... Guilt.

Rabbitheadlights · 30/10/2022 12:07

Asking really to find out what the hell is wrong with me? I make a roast on a Sunday EVERY week and not just a basic one either, Rain or Shine, hell or high water in sickness and health.

But my kids don't really care they can take it or leave it.

So why if I don't do it, do I feel this weird guilty type feeling, asthough I'm letting them down somehow? It's ridiculous!

I only do roast dinners on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
Makes them much more special, we've just had cheap asda pizza and chips today 😳
Tasty though.

Darbs76 · 30/10/2022 16:36

I certainly wouldn’t feel guilty, most of the time now if we have one we go out, it’s a lot of effort to cook it, clean up, I work full time and don’t want to spend my Sunday cooking a dinner

WaddleAway · 30/10/2022 16:45

Having said I never cook a roast, I am currently roasting a chicken. Having it with salad and crusty baguette though.

A massive salad?

Thesearmsofmine · 30/10/2022 17:25

My mum still makes a Sunday roast every week just for her and my dad. I hated them growing up, and tolerate them as an adult, my dc like them so I do one every few weeks for them and DH who loves a roast.

No, just a normal sized one 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeeDavis · 30/10/2022 17:54

I make a Sunday dinner every week, unless we make other plans. Like today, we’ve been out so haven’t done one. Usually I just do one on a Monday but my OH is working tomorrow evening so probably won’t bother til next Sunday now! I always loved it when I was at home and have carried it on with my own family!

Rabbitheadlights · 30/10/2022 18:00

I do love it, and it is an all day affair. I make everything from scratch and I think maybe it is a ritualistic thing for me. Sunday is my favourite day of the week. The kids spend the day doing crafts or out in the garden. DP sleeps as he's on nights and I just potter about the kitchen there is always dessert and then bath time a books before bed. Some weeks are more involved affair than others but it's always cooked from scratch and I'd rather starve than eat a frozen roast potato.

My teens all love a Sunday roast and I cook one most Sundays but only in autumn / winter. I don't bother in l later spring / summer as it's a bit of a heavy meal - especially as I serve a roast late afternoon rather than evening. In winter, by the ti e you've cleared up and settled down, it's dark and you can all get stuck into a Sunday night film. In summer we would t be ready to sit down until hours later.

3 in 1 is the local takeaway who does curries, kebabs and pizzas. A munchy box (in a bus sheltar)from them is much more appealing to kids than a roast with the family.
Were you never young @Rabbitheadlights ?

Not in our house it's not!

You have your answer - you do it because you enjoy it. Sounds idyllic and something the kids will come to appreciate (but probably only once they are adults!).

Rabbitheadlights · 30/10/2022 18:31

So it's not guilt I feel it's because I want to do it haha well there you go. The 5 yr oldis just going to have to get used to it.

We rarely have a roast, the kids aren't keen and DH was brought up on them (on Sundays) so can't bare them now. We don't have one on Christmas Day either - we'll get a curry and DS will have pizza.

I am doing sausages, potatoes and veg tonight though - does that count? 😉

Mummummummumyyyyy · 30/10/2022 18:41

Are you my mum?? Seriously, my mum does this, even if it’s only her and dad at home… she’ll spend all day slaving away in the kitchen each Sunday and do a big 3 course meal all from scratch. Neither I nor my siblings are that bothered about having a Sunday DInner and would rather spend time with mum and dad talking and going for a walk than her being chained to the oven all day. We’ve told her this but she doesn’t listen.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 30/10/2022 18:53

Sunday’s are for takeaway and wine
💃💃💃

honestogod · 30/10/2022 19:07

We have one every Sunday, my DDs get very aggrieved if we don't. Exceptions are holidays and if it is very hot. I love it, hours in the kitchen intermittently prepping veg with my girls and having a glass of wine and listening to podcasts. And then sitting down together and talking properly in depth, which we rarely do during the week. An amazing family ritual.

honestogod · 30/10/2022 19:10

Also, re going out, we just tweak the time. Today we had it at 4pm so that we could play a game, watch football, sometimes go for 12x sometimes 6.30 or 7 or later. It's only 2.5 hours and you're not on it the whole time?

Just a quick to say I had the most delicious twist on a Sunday roast today at a chicken restaurant, might even be my favourite ever.
It was 3 southern fried chicken breasts, with creamy mash, peas and collard greens with stuffing balls, Yorkshire pud and lashings of chicken gravy. It was amazing. I'm stuffed but couldn't stop eating it.

Definitely going to try to recreate this at home.

It's the oxo ad's fault. Bloody Linda Bellingham in her flowery apron drumming it into us over the years that Sunday's are for gathering round a roast with the family.

Hbh17 · 30/10/2022 22:16

I have been married for over 30 years. I have never cooked a roast dinner in my life. If my husband was bothered, he would be perfectly capable of cooking one himself.
If your children are adequately fed, then why does this matter? Roast dinners don't actually taste very nice, and I'm sure you have better things to do with your time.

FlakeySalt · 30/10/2022 22:55

My mum used to do a Sunday roast every week. She was a complete martyr to it. Saturday was spent going to the butcher and coming home and telling us stories of how she wasn’t being presented with the best cut but she then invariably got one over on the butcher.

Up at the crack of dawn on Sunday peeling veg and cremating roasting meat for lunchtime, trying to pry we children away from Sunday afternoon cartoons.

Then throwing a Brit fit when nobody would eat their dinner.

All followed by three days of leftovers.

It was such a point of contention every week.

She stopped when we were all late teens and even now, she still goes on about how great she was and how happy our home was and how there was a roast dinner on the table every week.

We have different recollections.

ellieboolou · 30/10/2022 23:34

My kids, husband and I all love our roasts! One of our favourite dinners, but I only tend to cook them in colder months.

I don't find them hard work at all, meat, potatoes & vegetables with gravy, I don't get the drama. Don't cook it often if you find it a faff. Lasagna in the other hand takes me bloody ages!

Justgorgeous · 31/10/2022 07:25

My DHs taste amazing! You're doing it wrong.
