Sunday dinner ... Guilt.

Asking really to find out what the hell is wrong with me? I make a roast on a Sunday EVERY week and not just a basic one either, Rain or Shine, hell or high water in sickness and health.

But my kids don't really care they can take it or leave it.

So why if I don't do it, do I feel this weird guilty type feeling, asthough I'm letting them down somehow? It's ridiculous!

My teens love a roast and would definitely eat that over fast food. I probably do one about 50% of Sundays. I also love cooking one- that sort of gentle pottering cooking over the day is a very enjoyable Sundayish activity for me.

I grew up having a roast every week, which I think came from my father’s childhood of having a roast every Sunday (meat bought with Friday’s wages) which was then re-served over the course of the week until you started again the following Sunday. Seems very old-fashioned now but it was a thrifty way to eat.

BellePeppa · 30/10/2022 12:26

I stopped doing a roast every Sunday when my kids obviously couldn’t care less if they had one or not. Dinner on a Sunday is usually just like any other day. If it’s a particularly cold or miserable day I’ll do one as it’s comforting.

3 in 1 is the local takeaway who does curries, kebabs and pizzas. A munchy box (in a bus sheltar)from them is much more appealing to kids than a roast with the family.
Were you never young @Rabbitheadlights ?

I’d never heard of a 3 in 1 either.

Same. Find them depressing. Sundays are a much happier day without them.

Same!! Don’t even like one when I go and visit the parents, I find them a bit boring. Our parents have become a bit more adventurous cooks now so it’s much better. Hated the drudgery of Sundays before going back to school, the routine of the roast definitely made it worse. We don’t do the same thing in our house every weekend and much prefer it.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 30/10/2022 12:29

I love a roast, so does DH, but the kids are not so keen. So we do a mix, I probably roast 1-2 weekends a month. Today it’s roast tenderloin with sage and onion stuffing (loin of pork for the uninitiated), mash, gravy and veg. Doesn’t take all day though unless you are feeding masses of people and have a huge joint, I won’t start it till 4pm earliest and we’ll be finished eating by 6pm! And I’ll have spent at least an hour between 4 and 6 messing about or actually eating.

Rabbitheadlights · 30/10/2022 12:30

Ok to clarify I don't see any link between the cooking of a roast and what is or is not a good mum. To the poster who asked if I was ever young .. I'm only 38 don't consider myself old just yet.

Maybe it is just nostalgia from my own youth I don't know... My 5 year old says religiously "is it Sunday? Oh no that means Sunday dinner!!"

The kids also often choose what we eat through the week so get plenty of choice.

Could also be that because we are a large family it's one of the only meals I can make that I don't have to rehash in someway or another for one or several.

I've never heard of a 3 in 1 either (but not from the UK originally).

If I am not doing a roast then I often do 'Sunday supper' which at the moment seems to be scrambled eggs, bacon, loads of toast and grilled tomatos. TBH that is getting wider appeal among my family members than anything I slave over. (I am a good cook and love cooking.).

Spanielsarepainless · 30/10/2022 12:33

I cook a roast dinner most Sundays. It gives cold meat for salad and sandwiches for several more days.

Gosh I find that even worse, now having to eat the same thing through the week and back to another roast on Sunday.

No, a 3 in 1 is chips, fried rice and curry sauce in a tray. A 4 in 1 has chicken added.

SealSquish · 30/10/2022 12:38

I personally think a roast is the most boring meal ever so I’m with the kids 🤣 I compromise by eating Xmas dinner as it’s once a year.

I personally had the idea of ‘routine’ meals, I like to just eat what I want. Today I’m having salmon and noodles. Though I don’t have children to consider so can see I have it easier!

Maybe start to do it every other week / once a month instead. They might fancy it more if it’s not every week.

MinnieMountain · 30/10/2022 12:40

DH prides himself on his roasts. We’re having one today. They wouldn’t happen anywhere near so often if our fussy 8yo didn’t like them too.

hiredandsqueak · 30/10/2022 12:41

Only dd and I here most Sundays as ds goes to their Dad's so I tend to cook a roast because we both like it and dd likes the ceremony of it I suppose. Today I'm making a steak pie with roast potatoes and veg which is dd's favourite but leaves me feeling flat I suppose. I think I enjoy the ritual of it as much as the food, makes me remember Sundays when I was growing up when everyone came home to have dm's roast.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 30/10/2022 12:42

DM always used to do a roast every Sunday whether we lived there or not and if we turned up or not.

She's only stopped it in past year or so or downgraded to special occasions as a free range chicken has got so expensive. My stepdad did like to do a roast though.

I sometimes do roasts (Jamie Oliver special chicken with prosciutto ham, fresh thyme, lots of butter, lemon and celeriac or sometimes a proper roast (the JO one the potatoes cook with the celeriac, under it) if people are coming over.

used to do a Toad in the Hole on Sundays with mash, gravy, onions and veggie that I kidded myself was roast!

Twinklenoseblows · 30/10/2022 12:42

Sounds like your kids would prefer it if you did something quick and easy and spent the saved time with them instead.

I never understand how Christmas feels special to people who have a roast every week.

It's the pigs in blankets for me 😁

Goldmember · 30/10/2022 12:44

I absolutely love roast dinner. Any meat, all is good. My family however, are not even slightly bothered. I generally only make one once or twice a week. Yes I grew up with Sunday fry up and Sunday roast every week.

I never understand how Christmas feels special to people who have a roast every week.

We add in things we don't normally have: better meat, sausages, stuffing, sprouts😄, Champagne, a special dessert, etc.

Goldmember · 30/10/2022 12:44

Once or twice a year!! Lol

NormaTheWife · 30/10/2022 12:45

Only eat them out now - they remind me of my dreaded ex MIL's Sunday specials with us all having to sit with my Ex BIL and his wife who were both dicks. I don't know why I put up with it - new wife going into an established family trying to fit in I guess. The meat served was on a rota.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 30/10/2022 12:46

I thought you were a bit overenthusiastic there, Gold!

InsertPunHere · 30/10/2022 12:47

They seem a lot of work, I can't be faffed with it.

InconvenientPeg · 30/10/2022 12:47

We all love a roast but don't have one every Sunday, just depends on who is doing what and whether anyone can be bothered to cook one. DD13 is the most motivated, so she'll sometimes volunteer to make one. And sometimes I'll make a roast in the week if I'm feeling it.

Today we're having leftover curry 😁

I like that it's not a given, MIL was a slave to Sunday roast and would moan constantly. And cook them at the height of summer, just not what you want to eat when it's 28 outside.

PrestonNorthHen · 30/10/2022 12:47

Guardup · 30/10/2022 12:16

I’m exactly the same- I also get really aggrieved if something disrupts my Sunday- so birthday parties and clubs etc, friends trying to arrange to come over (if I don’t want them for a roast!)- it’s illogical. My children weren’t really bothered either, but now they are slightly older they get a bit annoyed if we miss our roast day. I don’t think it’s the food, it’s just the whole ritual of it. Having an early glass of wine whilst I’m cooking, the children making the yorkshires, the fact they have their veg in one sitting, sitting round the table chatting, no one asking to get down from the table and then cleaning it all up for a game of cards. It’s literally my idea of the perfect family day and I love it. It would 100% be my last supper. Just embrace it! X

I loathe this on a Sunday.
Everything stinks of roast dinner, all the clearing up.
No thanks, nice easy dinner ,bath and relax.

PortalooSunset · 30/10/2022 12:47

Can you come and make me one?
