Sunday dinner ... Guilt.

Asking really to find out what the hell is wrong with me? I make a roast on a Sunday EVERY week and not just a basic one either, Rain or Shine, hell or high water in sickness and health.

But my kids don't really care they can take it or leave it.

So why if I don't do it, do I feel this weird guilty type feeling, asthough I'm letting them down somehow? It's ridiculous!

We've been having a roast every week recently and it's been lovely. However, DD said last week she didn't want one and got grumpy when we made one. This week I've just put an ham hock soup in the slow cooker for a change. Still do love a roast though.

Justgorgeous · 30/10/2022 12:58

Well done for doing it OP. My family love a roast and I cook 2 a week if I can. I just change the veg a bit and sometimes do mash instead in the week. Luckily, we all hate Dominoes !

Paris2023 · 30/10/2022 12:58

Get an air fryer! Make it much quicker. But seriously maybe just stop for a bit. Reframe it as a meal like any other. Meat and a few veg. Perhaps ask the kids if they’ll help cook something else or have ideas if they’re too young?

TheMoops · 30/10/2022 12:58

I love a roast, it doesn't feel like Sunday for me without one. We cook one even if the kids aren't home.

Same in our house BUT we all love it and I enjoy cooking it.

But if you don't enjoy it and people aren't bothered then I can see how it would feel like a chore.

Lemons1571 · 30/10/2022 12:59

Once a week seems very frequent in our busy lives. I assumed this ritual was a throwback from times when all women were SAHM’s and cooked a hearty meal for the menfolk on a Sunday before they went off for another week in physical men jobs?

DH occasionally does a “mini” roast on a Sunday - meat, potatoes and 1 or 2 types of veg. Couldn’t be doing with a weekly tie in though. What happens when you go out for the whole Sunday? Do you prepare the roast in the evening, or the night before?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/10/2022 13:01

actually when my children were little a roast was very diffiult, so much time spent in the kitchen
i ended up doing them on a monday,
put the roast in the oven, up to school to collect children, come back and do veggies and eat

JulesLight · 30/10/2022 13:01

Totally unrelated to the roast dinner but do your kids really choose most of your meals? You are building a rod for your back with that one! This sounds more stressful than the Sunday dinners!

gingercat02 · 30/10/2022 13:03

DH and I love a Sunday roast. DS not so much. I do still do one probably 2-3 Sunday's a month. We are having this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/chilli-marrakech today

EstellaRijnveld · 30/10/2022 13:07

Just do it once a month and you'll find the kids might enjoy and appreciate it more.

stopitstopitnow · 30/10/2022 13:08

I never cooked a roast when DD was living at home (apart from Christmas dinner). She spent EOW with her dad who always had a roast on Sundays so had one there. I never felt guilty about it and she still loves me.

Brendabigbaps · 30/10/2022 13:08

I know what you mean, I was brought up having a roast every Sunday.

now I get bored of them so to still make the main meal on a Sunday special I just make normal meals but add an extra element. So if we have sausage & mash I’ll make Yorkshire puds. If we have a pasta dish we’ll have a nice garlic bread and extra bits.
so your still making an effort.
we still have a roast once a month too

3 in 1 is the local takeaway who does curries, kebabs and pizzas. A munchy box (in a bus sheltar)from them is much more appealing to kids than a roast with the family.
Were you never young @Rabbitheadlights ?

wow thats a bit mean. People living in rural areas don't really have local takeaways. People without much spending money also don't do takeaways. It could just be a regional saying. There are many reasons.. You could have just said what is was 🙄

(Adding my ancient, decrepit and feeble voice to the whats that?)

OP - were you raised on the Linda Bellingham adverts? Ahhhhhhh bisto!

Whattheduck · 30/10/2022 13:16

I’m really missing my Sunday roast today my cooker decided to stop working on Friday so waiting for a new one to be delivered. It does have a small top oven but not big enough to do a roast so we are having jacket potatoes with gammon I’ve cooked in in the slowcooker and salad but I still feel bad not doing one as we all love a roast. The first thing I’ll do in my new cooker will be a roast chicken dinner.

TonTonMacoute · 30/10/2022 13:16

I know people think it's weird these days but I do a roast every Sunday (except on hot summer days). I find it one of the easiest meals of the week - joint, 1veg, roast potatoes and gravy. It's DS's favourite meal although he has left home now, I still do it for me and DH.

It seems the only problem you have in this situation is feeling guilty if you don't do a roast on Sunday. If you don't want to do it and the family don't care I really can't see what the issue is here.

DorritLittle · 30/10/2022 13:17

I rarely make a roast and can't do anything once a week anyway. It feels too oppressive. Just do it when you feel like it OP or ask them what they want to eat instead. I always think to myself, I bet Italian mamas don't cook a roast every Sunday.

Rabbitheadlights · 30/10/2022 13:17

I do love a Roast, I'm also a competent and enthusiastic cook. DP is a trained chef (though never cooks) maybe it's selfish ... Maybe I'm actually doing it for myself?

You can do it for me too. What time should I come over? Grin

Beautiful3 · 30/10/2022 13:22

Perhaps start alternating it? So home made pizzas one Sunday and roast the next? We don't always have a roast dinner on Sundays, kids prefer bangers and mash, or a full English.

I don’t think that’s a universal thing tbh no matter what age you are 😂. Sounds grim. Give me the OP’s roast dinner any day.

speakout · 30/10/2022 13:26

I cook a roast family meal about twice a year.
No one is very fond of a roast in our house.
And some days I don't cook at all- family have to heat up ready meals, get takeaways or make themselves a sandwich.

No guilt here.

Gingersay · 30/10/2022 13:26

I'm the same every Sunday without fail I make a roast, I don't know what else to eat on a Sunday it's an easy option for me. Although I have the timings to a T and it's not that much of an effort other than half an hour at the end and my kids love it and eat every bit including the mountain of veg they get.

speakout · 30/10/2022 13:28

A Sunday roast isn't such a big thing where I live in the UK.
I had my first roast dinner ( apart from christmas) when | was 12.
I had never heard of yorkshire puddings as a child either.

adriftabroad · 30/10/2022 13:28

It is so easy, a treat for me to assemble as it takes no time at all and is so simple if you just put a nice chicken potatoes, parsnips, carrots white wine and garlic/onion in a tray, a few green veggies steamed later. Done; you can have at least your 5 a day in one go. But as PP says, free range chickens are so expensive now.

I do it about once a month because of that. But I love the tradition of a Sunday roast.

It takes about 20 mins to assemble, put it in the oven. Relax. House smells wonderful.

DD(14) favourite meal and hugely nutritous and healthy.

Plus, leftovers for a day or two.

As PP says, a lasagne etc is far more effort.

At Christmas you obviously try a bit harder.

FuchsAndMöhr · 30/10/2022 13:29

We’ve had a Sunday roast today because I REALLY fancied it. Pulled out all the stops and it was lush!

We did say though that we couldn’t do it week in and week out!

Cut yourself some slack, make it an occasional treat and make Sundays for you!

mrsbyers · 30/10/2022 13:30

We stately have a roast , I think it dates back to a time when people ate a very limited diet during the week and the Sunday feast was a big event - we cook frOm scratch every night and have a really varied diet so a roast to me isn’t anything special at all
