Paying for something I didn't ask for

My partner thinks I'm over reacting and I need to know if I am..

We went shopping today and got the kids some trainers and me and my partner got a pair for ourselves as we had some spare cash and it's been a while since we got anything. We went to JD sports and spent what I think is quite a lot of money or at least it is for me. It's been a long time since I spent this amount of money in one go/one shop.

When I got home I was sorting the bag and found an extra in there, some shoe wipes. I thought oh that's nice they chucked in some free wipes and I was pleasantly surprised, to only see on the receipt that I paid 8 POUND for them!!!

To some it may not be a lot of money, and it's not. But £8 for shoe wipes that I didn't want or ask for and I'm fuming about it. My partner thinks I'm being ridiculous but I worked in retail for 13 years and wouldn't dream of doing that. And my partner keeps telling me I'm being pathetic and it's making me more angry. They were lovely to us in the shop and now I know why!!

Would anyone else be annoyed about that? I cannot let it go 🤣 help me!

How did they manage to get that past you? I’d be cross and take them back.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/10/2022 18:59

I’d be livid.

£8 for wipes?

I have cleaning wipes at home that cost £1 and I bet it’s the exact same shit.

Take them back.

ChampagneLassie · 29/10/2022 19:00

Annoyed? Yes but I'd let it go. I doubt that's why they were being nice to you, how'd that work, triple commission on the shoe wipes? 😂Probably just an error

Justmuddlingalong · 29/10/2022 19:00

Was it actually you who was at the till paying? If not, could he have agreed when the sales assistant tried to flog them?

Nik2015 · 29/10/2022 19:00

Can you return them?

gonutkin · 29/10/2022 19:00

@Brigante9 I honestly don't know, I was taking something back to exchange so didn't notice at the time as I knew I would have to pay some towards what we had got today. Funny thing was I saw her put them on the counter by her and I was thinking if she asks if I want them I'm definitely saying no. I'm assuming they get commission or targets for the extras and I'm so annoyed she didn't even ask me.. just added them to the total and stupid me paid it!

Millsbills · 29/10/2022 19:01

I’d be retuning them when next around a JD sports

But how much are you going on about this? As I’m wondering if you’re talking about it a bit and that’s pissing your DH off

gonutkin · 29/10/2022 19:02

Yeah it was me at the counter, I'm usually quite switched on with what I'm spending and don't know how I didn't realise, if it was a pound or something I wouldn't mind so much but I just think that to charge me £8 for something I didn't want is extremely cheeky

OP posts:
gonutkin · 29/10/2022 19:03

@Millsbills I'm definitely going on about it to DP, I'm not surprised he's getting fed up about it. But even at the start he wasn't bothered and I think I've been trying to convince him that the girl took the piss!

JustAJokeLikeOnTopGear · 29/10/2022 19:04

I’d be furious. But I’d email and ask for a refund directly and state I do not want the inconvenience or cost of a return visit.

BatshitBanshee · 29/10/2022 19:05

I'd say they saw a customer paying for multiple pairs of shoes and thought "yeah she can afford it" and put it in. I'd be livid and I don't blame you if you went back.

MaryPoppinPills · 29/10/2022 19:05

That's really cheeky.
Shoe shop staff are usually targeted on how much shoe care products they sell. It's a pain in the arse asking customers and I say that as an ex shoe shop manager.
He clearly chanced it and got away with it

Kite22 · 29/10/2022 19:06

Yes, I'd be furious too, and want my money back.

Then you’re definitely being unreasonable

just return them and move on

SpookabooAtTheZoo · 29/10/2022 19:10

I can't believe people on this thread would let this go, you're all clearly on a different income bracket to me! I'd phone up the store and complain to the manager then I'd be back there to get my money back.

Same. I’m far from loaded.

Shit like this is one of the reasons I shop mostly online. None of this horrible shit/surprises at checkouts.

rwalker · 29/10/2022 19:15

Take them back it’s the principle no difference if it’s 8p or £8

Gunpowder · 29/10/2022 19:17

I’d email and complain. They can refund the money to your card. It’s not ok.

TheChosenTwo · 29/10/2022 19:22

Haha cheeky fuckers!
I’d be moaning about it too 😂
I’m about 20 minutes away from a JD, depends on how much I needed the £8 if I would bother to drive there to return them (because I’m lazy and don’t need the £8, the important part of this is my laziness, £8 is £8 and I’d rather have it than not but I’d have to spend 40 minutes worth of fuel and another £3 to park for an hour and I just know I would never bother) but it’s definitely bloody cheeky and I’d be very annoyed!!

SavingsThreads · 29/10/2022 19:25

It was probably just a mistake. Take them back and get a refund 🤷🏼‍♀️

This, I don't suppose there's any kind of organised atempt to charge shoppers for things they don't want in the hope that no one will notice

Absofuckinglutely! Why the hell should they get away with that

Usererror1999 · 29/10/2022 19:40

Sports direct were cheeky fuckers too and just added a big mug to the bottom of online orders

They couldn't do that in the actual shops as the mug wouldn't fit in the bag.

I would want a refund without taking them back too. I'd be furious.
