Paying for something I didn't ask for

My partner thinks I'm over reacting and I need to know if I am..

We went shopping today and got the kids some trainers and me and my partner got a pair for ourselves as we had some spare cash and it's been a while since we got anything. We went to JD sports and spent what I think is quite a lot of money or at least it is for me. It's been a long time since I spent this amount of money in one go/one shop.

When I got home I was sorting the bag and found an extra in there, some shoe wipes. I thought oh that's nice they chucked in some free wipes and I was pleasantly surprised, to only see on the receipt that I paid 8 POUND for them!!!

To some it may not be a lot of money, and it's not. But £8 for shoe wipes that I didn't want or ask for and I'm fuming about it. My partner thinks I'm being ridiculous but I worked in retail for 13 years and wouldn't dream of doing that. And my partner keeps telling me I'm being pathetic and it's making me more angry. They were lovely to us in the shop and now I know why!!

Would anyone else be annoyed about that? I cannot let it go 🤣 help me!

DS used to work for them and said shop staff were hounded to upsell items at the till. They didn’t get commission but had targets to reach. Email head office and complain selling items without consent is not on. Plus DS found them awful to work for, staff turnover was terrible.

Clarklette85 · 29/10/2022 21:50

That would be going straight back to the shop and I would be speaking to a manager or head office et. and let them know that in the middle of a cost of living crisis you’ve had money taken for something you didnt agree to. Totally totally wrong.

Momo8 · 29/10/2022 22:05

I'd be taking the whole lot back for a refund, not just the wipes, amd I'd be making it clear to the manager why its all being returned.

starfishmummy · 29/10/2022 23:57

I dont understand how people wouldn't notice an extra on the bill unless it was a huge shop (eg big supermarket shop. I'm not great at maths but on something like shoes I'd have mentally totted up the total before I paid - sadly I've often found that I have been overcharged when the system hasn't taken off special offers etc. Weirdly they never undercharge!!

PinkSyCo · 30/10/2022 01:04

Wow that is so deceitful. In fact it’s basically theft. I would definitely complain and demand my money back. Cheeky fuckers.

MadelineUsher · 30/10/2022 05:56

Unless you saw her pick them up from a section marked "overpriced shoe wipes" then it may be some other customer may have left them on the counter and she picked them up idly and scanned them thinking they were part of your purchase.

I'd still want my money back.

And please provide your source forvthe illegality.

It's likely to be an unfair commercial practice under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. In addition, regulation 40 of the Consumer Contracts (etc) Regulations could be argued as applicable.

It was probably just a mistake. Take them back and get a refund 🤷🏼‍♀️

How do you mistakenly scan something and put it in a bag?

Spent many a year working in retail and genuinely interested in this and I can't see how how it's possible. (However I haven't worked retail for 15 years and I know things change!)

If you don't want them email the head office as a starting point. Don't spend equal of them £8 driving to a store and paying to park to save you the £8. That's not worth it!

Hoppinggreen · 30/10/2022 10:07

I wouldn’t be happy but the time it would take me to sort it isn’t worth £8 to me

I'm autistic and my understanding of money is awful. On paper I know how things work and the benefit of saving, being frugal etc, but I can't apply it realistically. I often buy things and have no idea how much they cost. Only yesterday I was out with DD and bought a Christmas present for my youngest. Later in we were talking about our day shopping and I had to ask DD how much the item had cost because I didn't take it in at all. It was over £50 as well.

You are the exact type of person that these cheeky fuckers rely on. Well done.

Honestly it wouldn't even surprise me if a manager had told staff to do this! The individual stores of these companies have targets to meet and they probably see people who can afford 4 pairs of trainers in one shop as someone who won't notice an extra few quid on the bill and not query/ pull them up on it. You won't have been the first and you likely won't be the last! JD is not a cheap option for trainers. People on a tight budget don't ordinarily shop there. I would ring head office not the store as i can almost guarantee no investigation or disciplinary will come of it that way.

voiceofmarion · 30/10/2022 10:29

I can't believe people on this thread would let this go, you're all clearly on a different income bracket to me

it's not just about the money though and I say that on somebody on sickness benefits, it's the deceit of it and the principle. Staff dealing with the general public be in teachers, nurses, shop assistants etc are in a position of trust and you expect that as a bare minimum because that's their job.

Reminds me of a time many years ago I was entering a nightclub. The fee was 8 quid and it was nye so I falsely assumed it was 16 euro as my mate said it was earlier. I handed it to the bouncer taking cash on the way in, he said nothing and I walked on. I was totally on my own too and nobody near me so he knew it wasn't for two people.

I found out later the true admission but it pissed me off his dishonesty and again it wasn't even about the cash, it was that he was in a position of trust dealing with people who had a few drinks etc and he exploited it. I still think about it years later and it pisses me off.

Worse though is think of all the vulnerable people who wouldn't even understand/realise the con who get served by staff like this.

voiceofmarion · 30/10/2022 10:34

Shit like this is one of the reasons I shop mostly online. None of this horrible shit/surprises at checkouts

no but huge customs charges appear these days after you order.

ThreeblackCats · 30/10/2022 10:36

Annoying but not much you can do now. Maybe the wipes were on the counter by the till and one of the assistants thought they were yours!

TBH is it worth returning, parking etc for the sake of a few quid? At least you’ll have nice clean trainers.

voiceofmarion · 30/10/2022 10:39

How do you mistakenly scan something and put it in a bag

meh if you are exhausted it can easily happen in fairness. I used to work in retail and during long shifts I made a few such mistakes like overcharging people. They prob thought I did it in purpose but I didn't, I was just exhausted after consecutive days of long shifts.

ForwardRolls · 30/10/2022 10:47

I would be going straight back with them and tearing a strip off the one who did this.
Then again, I would know how much my bill was going to be before I even got to the till.

So are you saying it's legal to charge people for things that they haven't agreed to? If you went into curry's to buy a TV and they decided to take an extra £350 off your card and pop a laptop in with the order, is that legal?

voiceofmarion · 30/10/2022 10:53

I would be going straight back with them and tearing a strip off the one who did this

it might have being a genuine error though, haven't you ever made a mistake at work?

HumourReplacementTherapy · 30/10/2022 10:55

I don't believe it was a mistake at all. Far more likely that the sales assistant had a daily target and scanned it in.
I'd be posting on Twitter in the first instance and like hell would I be going back in to the store for my refund.
If nobody complains it will never get picked up and it's likely you're not the only one.

Genuine error my arse!
A genuine error would be if the assistant had accidentally put it in her bag and not charged her for it.

hugefanofcheese · 30/10/2022 11:02

Just email customer service to start with, send a photo of the receipt and the wipes. Say you don't want to spend money and time travelling back but definitely didn't put these in your basket. Could well have been a mistake.

itsallbullshit · 30/10/2022 11:23

This happened to us too at JD! Although we were told that as we were buying a few pairs of trainers, they would throw in some ‘free’ wipes. Only when we got home and looked at the receipt and saw they’d charged us for them! Not a chance would I have had them normally. Absolute cheeky fuckery.

Are we quite sure her DP didn’t say yes to buying them?
