Paying for something I didn't ask for

My partner thinks I'm over reacting and I need to know if I am..

We went shopping today and got the kids some trainers and me and my partner got a pair for ourselves as we had some spare cash and it's been a while since we got anything. We went to JD sports and spent what I think is quite a lot of money or at least it is for me. It's been a long time since I spent this amount of money in one go/one shop.

When I got home I was sorting the bag and found an extra in there, some shoe wipes. I thought oh that's nice they chucked in some free wipes and I was pleasantly surprised, to only see on the receipt that I paid 8 POUND for them!!!

To some it may not be a lot of money, and it's not. But £8 for shoe wipes that I didn't want or ask for and I'm fuming about it. My partner thinks I'm being ridiculous but I worked in retail for 13 years and wouldn't dream of doing that. And my partner keeps telling me I'm being pathetic and it's making me more angry. They were lovely to us in the shop and now I know why!!

Would anyone else be annoyed about that? I cannot let it go 🤣 help me!

If it was definitely not a mistake I'd return to the store with all the shoes plus wipes and request a refund, and go elsewhere with less nefarious trading practices to re-purchase them.

From what l take from the OP is that they bought something rather more expensive than they usually buy so should, presumably know how much that item costs. The extra £8 should have been obvious.

That’s not the point.
So you are fine with a store putting extra stuff in you bag, not asking you, or pointing it out and just charging you for it?

OldFan · 30/10/2022 11:53

Very odd. No you're not wrong. I would take the wipes back and get a refund. I can only assume they were meant to be free but the server forgot or something.

Berthatydfil · 30/10/2022 11:57

Who buys shoe wipes - what even are they? Most people would use a damp cloth or kitchen roll etc.
The staff are probably on minimum wage and under pressure to up sell items like this. Why I don't know as most people totally hate it x
I suspect that shop assistant saw how much you were spending and just added them on thinking you wouldnt notice, this is totally unacceptable.

Years ago I had phones4u kindly add sky sports to a phone contract during an upgrade. I think it was £5.99 a month. Luckily, the network just cancelled and refunded it. I'm not sure if it ever worked its way back to the shop or employee. Probably not

QueSyrahSyrah · 30/10/2022 12:13

I'd assume it was a mistake and depending how important the £8 was to me Vs the inconvenience of taking them back then I either would or wouldn't.

I haven't got the energy to be 'livid' 'fuming' or 'raging' over such a non-event, nor is my default setting to assume every member of retail staff if constantly on the fiddle.

Unless you saw her pick them up from a section marked "overpriced shoe wipes" then it may be some other customer may have left them on the counter and she picked them up idly and scanned them thinking they were part of your purchase.

I'd still want my money back.

I saw her pick them up from away from the till and bring them to where we were, so I was certain they were going to at least offer them to me which is fine but I had already decided I would say no as I had tried similar things and didn't need them. She didn't offer and I didn't see her put them in the bag so I didn't give it another thought until we got home and unpacked the stuff. I immediately thought oh they have given us some free wipes but when my partner told me to check the receipt there it was £8 charge for them.

Also for other posters, I was refunding something and using it to exchange towards the new purchases so I didn't work out how much exactly I would be paying extra which is my fault, will definitely take more care next time I shop in a store cheeky gits! Will email them and see what happens..

Not read the whole thing but I wouldn't be too sure it's an accident. A lot of shops have targets and the staff get extra commission for selling add ons. And if they get caught can just claim it to be a mistake.

Needmorelego · 30/10/2022 13:43

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet I have never been charged £3.99 for a bag in HMV and I shop there a lot.

RiverSkater · 30/10/2022 15:50

I used to work in a shoe shop a long time ago and we had targets for 'fancies' which was polishes and bags, there was a prize for getting the most. I think it was an hour off which you could take or build up to get a day off. If you sold a bag it was happy days! 🎉🥳

I think there will be similar targets now.

I would definitely raise and get my money back!!

It was a canvas bag and all they offer now apparently 🤷‍♀️

MadelineUsher · 31/10/2022 01:11

Oh, in that case, that is dastardly. I hope you get you money back and a store credit as a gesture of goodwill and further apology.

Needmorelego · 31/10/2022 09:09

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet that's odd. If I get a bag at HMV it's always a regular plastic one - and I shop at various different branches.
It sounds more like the branch you were in had just run out of plastic ones.
Bit rotten of them if they didn't explain that properly to you.
