Paying for something I didn't ask for

My partner thinks I'm over reacting and I need to know if I am..

We went shopping today and got the kids some trainers and me and my partner got a pair for ourselves as we had some spare cash and it's been a while since we got anything. We went to JD sports and spent what I think is quite a lot of money or at least it is for me. It's been a long time since I spent this amount of money in one go/one shop.

When I got home I was sorting the bag and found an extra in there, some shoe wipes. I thought oh that's nice they chucked in some free wipes and I was pleasantly surprised, to only see on the receipt that I paid 8 POUND for them!!!

To some it may not be a lot of money, and it's not. But £8 for shoe wipes that I didn't want or ask for and I'm fuming about it. My partner thinks I'm being ridiculous but I worked in retail for 13 years and wouldn't dream of doing that. And my partner keeps telling me I'm being pathetic and it's making me more angry. They were lovely to us in the shop and now I know why!!

Would anyone else be annoyed about that? I cannot let it go 🤣 help me!

YANBU.

id be returning them.

I’ve noticed more and more shops are doing this cheeky fuckery. I went to HMV and got the kids one of those mystery boxes. Which is essentially a show box full of surprise crap for £10. I asked for a bag, thinking they’d be 30p max. He said “£13.99 please”. I thought maybe I’d picked up a premium mystery box, if such a thing exists, but no - it’s £3.99 for a carrier bag! I told him they need to tell people as if you’re spending hundreds for example you’d never know. 4 fucking quid!!

billy1966 · 29/10/2022 19:48

I would be absolutely furious at the sheer CFxxkery of that.

That was NOT and accident.

Definitely return and contact head office.

I consider that theft.

You did not buy those.
They did not have permission to charge you for an e tra item.

Is your partner a bit dim?

I would also probably go on about it, I think a lot of people would too.

YANBU

If you are quite sure DH didn't add them, I suspect the staff member is fiddling the till totals in some way.

I'd phone the shop and ask to speak to the manager. Polite but firm.
Say that a member of staff put unwanted goods in your bag and added eight pounds to the bill, which you didn't realise until you got home and found the wipes. You're wondering why the staff member did this. You require a speedy refund of the eight pounds overcharge , and an investigation and explanation.

Identify which staff member served you.

Kiitos · 29/10/2022 19:59

Urgh. That’s such an underhand thing to do. I absolutely hate it when you are charged for something you haven’t agreed to pay for. I once stopped going to a dentist cos he did an x-ray without telling me it would be an extra charge (which I would have happily agreed to pay, I just hate the way he snuck it past me).

I would absolutely complain. If it is a technique of theirs to increase sales it’s awful, preying on people being unaware or too polite/embarrassed to say anything.

How could charging customers for things and giving them those things be fiddling the till?

mnahmnah · 29/10/2022 20:17

If it wasn’t too far away, I would return them and speak to the manager to let them know that this is what’s happening at the till. Was the name of the person that served you in the receipt?

And while you're at it, ask them to burn down the store and execute all the staff.

HarissaAllDay · 29/10/2022 20:26

I can't believe people wouldn't do anything about it! You can't just add things to people's shopping. Confused

Poppins2016 · 29/10/2022 20:29

MaryPoppinPills · 29/10/2022 19:05

That's really cheeky.
Shoe shop staff are usually targeted on how much shoe care products they sell. It's a pain in the arse asking customers and I say that as an ex shoe shop manager.
He clearly chanced it and got away with it

This is exactly the reason I'd be returning and making a complaint. It's bad enough that employees are tasked with "upselling", even worse that they're under so much pressure to do so that they resort to underhand practices like this which actually repel customers from buying again (definitely not a great sales strategy in the long term).

custardbear · 29/10/2022 20:36

I'd be livid too and we are not struggling ... I'd insist on a refund and would do it through head office. Is there a name on the receipt as they need training!

Millsbills · 29/10/2022 20:37

I think it’s naive for posters to think this can’t possible be on purpose, that the op was charged for something these shop assistants are targeted on

(thinks back to her days working at the cinema and putting through a large drink to make up my ‘combo’ scores!)

VeniVidiWeeWee · 29/10/2022 20:39

From what l take from the OP is that they bought something rather more expensive than they usually buy so should, presumably know how much that item costs. The extra £8 should have been obvious.

winterchills · 29/10/2022 20:39

I would be absolutely fuming definitely take them back!!

Oblomov22 · 29/10/2022 20:41

That would hack me off. Easy enough to not notice at the time.

BCBird · 29/10/2022 20:41

I think k this is a principle thing. I could afford the 8 quid but would definitely take them back. It would probably cost mr a fair bit on petrol.but I would not care. Cheeky gits😨🤣

This.

gonutkin · 29/10/2022 20:44

I would usually be understanding and give the benefit of the doubt of it being accidental but I saw her grab them and assumed she would be offering it and I totally get why they need to do that.

Worst thing was it was the manager who served me or at least a superior as other members of staff were asking her for help and to help with returns etc

OP posts:
PinkButtercups · 29/10/2022 20:49

I'd take them back for a refund.

Caroffee · 29/10/2022 20:51

I'd be fuming. Return them and ask for a refund. Any problems with this, email customer services.

TheLette · 29/10/2022 20:53

I imagine this was an accident as it's illegal to charge people for stuff like this without their agreement. They can't just sneak it into the bag. Just go back and ask for a refund. Preface it with a complaint so they don't try to claim their refund policy doesn't apply or something.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 29/10/2022 20:54

I'd email them with a copy of the receipt and complain. I'd be furious too

Dibbydoos · 29/10/2022 21:14

I would be livid. I would call the manager and chew husband ear off. He has a dishonest member of staff who may get commission on upselling....

I was atomic when the Titanic museum charged my carrier bag tax when I bought 2 of their cloth bags 50p) 🤣 I wanted to call them but was so busy when I returned to work that I haven't yet. But I have the receipt ready so I will def call them when I get a minute...

£3.99 for a plastic carrier bag? Really?

Nope. You are not entitled to an investigation nor an explanation. You can report what you think happened and then it’s up to them how they deal with it. None of your business after.
