Just Stop Oil's daily protests

Is anyone else concerned about where these daily protests will lead us?

The public are clearly getting more and more irritated by their antics. It's only a matter of time before one of the protestors are seriously injured.

I'm also worried that the government will ban certain types of protest as a result?

They’re literally called ‘Just Stop Oil’ surely the cause is obvious

I'm sure there's a little more to it than that. I wouldn't and won't know.

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 27/10/2022 16:56

I would have a lot more truck with their protests if they targeted the institutions and individuals who are the ones able to make a difference. As a household we try to be environmentally aware, consume as little as possible, but, at our level it makes little difference.

As a pp pointed out, they need to be protesting Arab countries, China, Russia, India, Brazil, but, of course, the UK is a soft target - disruption with no fear of serious consequences, preaching to the reasonably converted. Disrupting the lives of ordinary people trying to go about their lives will only get everyone's back's up.

Go and target individuals who have the power to really change things, not Joe Bloggs who recycles, uses public transport and doesn't overconsume, but Jeff Bezos who actively encourages overconsumption, and Xi Jinping, approving the building of new coal power stations and damming rivers affecting whole eco systems further downstream.

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 27/10/2022 16:58

This thread is awful.

Climate change is already killing thousands around the globe.
Drilling for new oil reserves is so, so wrong.

I applaud these brave, brave protestors.

YellowTreeHouse · 27/10/2022 16:58

@electricdreaming I see you’re conveniently ignoring all the people who have died as a result of their actions.

Guess that doesn’t fit with your narrative of them being good people, huh?

YellowTreeHouse · 27/10/2022 16:45

The deaths of Lisa Webber and a GP in her 40s were caused because ambulances couldn’t get to the crash site on time because of these idiots.

There are countless more. People who have been paralysed because ambulances didn’t get to the hospital on time. Sick infants delayed to hospital.

They are murderers.

This has proven to be untrue - ambulances weren’t blocked. Please see the link I posted earlier. Their policy is to move out of the way for emergency vehicles.

Just replied to you

As far as I’m aware both XR and Just Stop Oil’s policies are to get out of the way for emergency vehicles.

No, they don't - www.independent.co.uk/tv/climate/ambulance-roger-hallam-extinction-rebellion-v6cfe3668?amp

Squirelnutkins · 27/10/2022 17:01

@SomethingToldTheWildGeese Yes brave protestors stopping people getting to work and doing actual research and development, including scientists and a lot of my ex colleagues in the industry who are actively researching ways to actually tackle these issues. Yes protestors are really helping aren't they pathetic 🙄

YellowTreeHouse · 27/10/2022 17:01

@electricdreaming It’s not untrue at all, but of course you have to believe that.

Like I said, young and naive.

You seem to be conveniently ignoring all those dying and displaced due to climate change.

Yes let’s resort to name calling because you can’t back up what you’re saying with any actual evidence. I don’t have to believe anything, but you carry on reading the daily Mail and other right wing rags telling you what you want to believe.

electricdreaming · 27/10/2022 16:17

It makes me laugh when everyone’s all “fuck them, let them be seriously injured. Just ignore them they’ll grow up eventually.” Same could’ve been said for Emily Davison and the suffragette movement as a whole. It’s never compared though is it?

None of them have died yet. Only a member of the public has when they wouldn't let her ambulance through. The protesters didn't care about that which frees us from caring about them.

Not true - please read the link I posted upthread. The ambulance wasn’t blocked - they have a policy of moving for emergency vehicles.

For what exactly 😭😭😭 please get a life. Because I agree with the right to protest? My parents have been on a few of them themselves x

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 27/10/2022 17:10

For those who agree with the protests and methods, could you explain what you think Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil are achieving by them.

VinoDino · 27/10/2022 17:11

You seem to be conveniently ignoring all those dying and displaced due to climate change.

And disrupting members of the public going about their daily business is really going to help that. Why don't they pull their brain cells together and target the organisations and countries who can actually make a difference?

electricdreaming · 27/10/2022 17:11

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 27/10/2022 17:10

They’re making themselves heard, even if you think it’s for the wrong reasons.

ginghamstarfish · 27/10/2022 17:11

They are a shower of twats. Who would care if they got injured through their own stupid actions, except that it would take up valuable and overstretched NHS resources. They are right to be concerned about this matter but this is definitely not the way to go about it and does not gain any support from the public. Why don't they glue themselves to an oil refinery/oil tycoon's house etc? Oh yes because the police might get involved then.

charleyfarleysaunt · 27/10/2022 17:15

They are literally trying to get attention to get people to understand why we need to try to save the planet

I imagine suffragettes had a similar reaction from the public when they were campaigning for the right for women to vote:

"The Suffragettes were part of the 'Votes for Women' campaign that had long fought for the right of women to vote in the UK. They used art, debate, propaganda, and attack on property including window smashing and arson to fight for female suffrage."

At least these campaigners aren't using arson!

Squirelnutkins · 27/10/2022 17:18

Yes because were all stupid and don't understand, we obviously need these bell ends teaching us, give it a rest they are attention seeking pathetic bums. 🙄

Hilarymantelspencilsharpener · 27/10/2022 17:21

electricdreaming, they may be making themselves heard, but what are they actually achieving? And I think you're right about them making themselves heard for the wrong reasons - most people know them as 'those knobs who block roads, glue themselves to trains and deface statues', rather than people who are trying to do something positive about climate change.

The particular instance of the woman defacing Capt Tom Moore's statue is a case in point. Capt Moore actually DID something - he didn't obstruct or harm anyone. The young woman who poured shit over his statue - what did she actually achieve? Other than become known for the rest of her life as the young woman who poured shit over the statue of an elderly man who raised people's spirits during a dark time, and raised millions to help people. Waytogo, what a hero - and if course, no-one knows her name, or the name of the organisation she represents.

BigFatLiar · 27/10/2022 17:22

It would be nice if there was an alternative. Most of the alternatives ignore that they rely on large amounts of oil to make them and oil isnr just about petrol for cars.
