AIBU?

To be annoyed at Prince Harry's memoir title SPARE

I have zero interest in this couple who seem to enjoy making a living on moaning about how they are poorly treated in Britain. Just saw the headline news and the cover of Harry's memoir with his face and one single word SPARE.

Get a life for goodness sake. I'm about his age and never once thought of him as a spare. He kinda invented his own tale.

Apparently it’s the nickname he was given by other family members.

I won’t be reading.

It's a reference to the phrase 'Heir and spare' that royal brides are expected to produce. William is the Heir. Harry is the spare. So it makes sense as the title for his autobiography.

What's your issue with it?

It’s awful. Demonstrates how much of a victim he thinks he is. I am fed up of the victim narrative

I fed up with Prince Harry in general. It's one thing to want to opt out of being a royal, but quite another to keep rocking the boat once you have your "private life" (for one seeking privacy he seems to go to great lengths to keep in the public eye)

Agree, this buck will be in a bargain bin in "The Works" by the end of April.

It does seem like a terribly self-pitying framing, given his enormous privilege and wealth. He's hardly a second-class citizen, is he?

how weird that he doesn't think about his life the exact same way you, someone he's never met, do!

You might not of thought of him as “spare” but maybe that’s how he felt…..I have heard that was a nickname he was given by some in the family - being called that as a kid is gonna have an impact!

I don’t like him but can’t get wound up about the title of a book I am never gonna read

I think it makes sense an heir and a spare. Not saying he's not been enormously privelaged blah de blah but I'm assuming the sort of person to buy/ read his book will be royalist types.

I think it’s quite clever marketing. You’ve no interest OP, yet you have started a thread on it. I’d say it’s doing it job at getting attention.

But in royal protocol of the time that's what he was.

The spare to the heir.

That will have a massive impact on someone.

You only have to read threads on here from people who's lives have been negatively impacted by a sibling being the golden child.

  1. It is well-known term for the second child, especially in a wealthy family
  2. It was his nickname in his family
  3. Not sure what you thought about him is relevant
  4. Everyone invents their own tale, that is normal for humans

I am extremely unlikely to read it, but the title makes sense and is fine.

He sounds firmly installed into self-pitying victim mode. He clearly has a lot of angry scores he feels the need to settle. It’s ironical that the only claim to fame and means of earning a living is by trading off the status of the family he seems to deeply despise. If he wasnt a Prince, Diana’s son and son of the king, literally nobody would give a shiny shit about him.

Not really annoyed but for his own sake, I really hope he finds a way to stop being so backward looking all the time. Everything he does seems to be about the first 1/3 of his life; he still has 2/3 to go (with good health).

I get that it was an exceptional 1/3 but he is going to spend far more years out of Royal duties and control then he ever was in it.

He has a beautiful family and a life he can now shape as he wishes. It has to be better for his mental health to focus on his future, not always his past?

It’s not about you though. He was the one being called spare as a nickname, not you!

And people who have zero interest on a subject don’t start threads about it.

Just let him get on with his life, no one is forcing you to read the book or to read about it online.

How dare he tell his own story. He must be silence at once. Your think he’d just stop doing anything because a random woman on MN is annoyed by him.

That's a good indicator of how sour and bitter his book really is. It's only about trashing his own family. Victim mentality all the way.

Well, that is the same for all the Royal Family, they are only famous because of birth or marriage Confused

But that's what he was and even what his family called him. An heir and a spare. I reckon he had a pretty shit upbringing tbh, I think people would feel differently about him if his family weren't weren't rich. Travelling and having expensive things doesn't make up for being the back sheep and losing your mum, who your dads family hated.

The above by haunted cabinet really.

There comes a time when you can choose to mature like a fine wine or sit in the gloom and pickle yourself in vinegar.

I wish he would choose to shine. He has all he has ever wanted and could live an equally charmed, if different life.

I fear that not only the title but the contents of the book may come to be as sour as it sounds.

A shame.

Good for him, the more honest you can be about yourself the harder it is. I imagine being the spare has dictated how his life played out.

I don't begrudge him telling his story at all ! Imagine you had a life like his I'm sure you would consider it book worthy
