This is not democracy.

The conservatives won the last general election for a five year term , the leader was not voted in so nope for me no justification for a call for an election now

theworldhas · 24/10/2022 14:33

I’m glad it’s not Johnson’s again as his clown act wins millions of votes for some reason. Probably they have whatever bug Nadine Dorries has. Sunak is what he is: a hugely privileged individual who chose to join a political party which aims to maintain the massive wealth inequality present in the UK compared to other OECD nations and run down and then privatise all public services. . Apart from that he seems alright I guess.

Mercurial123 · 24/10/2022 14:33

But is Sunak's mandate aligned with BoJo's which won him the election? If not it's perfectly reasonable to call for a GE.

Hawkins001 · 24/10/2022 14:34

What's the purpose of a democracy, if the majority of voters vote using popularity method ?

Stars71 · 24/10/2022 14:35

ilovesooty · 24/10/2022 14:26

If he says Sunak isn't British it appears that he is.

That's what you would like to think. English isn't a race.

WahineToa · 24/10/2022 14:35

It is democracy.

We do not vote for a PM. We vote for our MPs.

nightbulb · 24/10/2022 14:35

EverywhereIgo · 24/10/2022 14:26

This.

Agree

theworldhas · 24/10/2022 14:35

@mrsbyers

youre right there is not much legal justification. Though the fact that some in the government themselves are calling for a GE suggests the country would be better getting rid ASAP. Through Brexit followed by general economic incompetence they’ve wrecked the economy good and proper. At least public services aren’t under strain and housing is readily available. Oh …

WeepingSomnambulist · 24/10/2022 14:35

It is democracy.
We dont elect the prime minister in this country.

We elect a local MP. That is all. The party with the most MPs becomes the leading party, and they choose their own leader. That party leader is our PM.

You may elect your local MP because of the party they are a member of or you may elect them because they, specifically, are the person you want as your local MP. It doesn't matter. Either way, you choose and MP, but you dont choose the prime minister.

Consverative are the leading party until the next GE. They choose their leader. That's who we get as PM.

Buckle up people. Now it’s time to pay for Rishi’s largesse when he borrowed and printed half a trillion pounds so that you could stay at home and bake banana bread and watch Netflix. Don’t remember anyone in these quarters complaining why healthy people were locked at home while the economy was being destroyed. Why so much rage at Rishi now?

This people are whining now nobody listened to us a couple of years ago 😡. Now they are whining about it , the bills have come in and we have to pay for the excessive spending and money printing.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/10/2022 14:06

This is not democracy.

Yes it is unfortunately - this is the type of democracy we have.

When you vote you are voting for your local MP, not the party or the PM. Your local MP then has the right to make decisions on your behalf - they are not there to represent your views.

A party can change its leader as many times as they like - it is only tradition that means the PM is the leader of the biggest parliament, it is not law - The King (I just wrote Queen and had to delete) can choose who ever he wants to be PM. The only stipulation is it has to be the person who can manage the majority of MP's.

No. We're baffled by the number of people who think they are making a clever point are just exposing their own ignorance.

You're baffled that a large chunk of the electorate see this Tory clown show as stretching the definition of democracy? I can only assume you spend a large chunk of your time existing in a state of bafflement.

LightDrizzle · 24/10/2022 14:36

Namechangeforthis88 · 24/10/2022 14:11

I don't understand why it isn't democracy? What have I missed? You never get to vote for the PM, you vote for the representative for your constituency, then the party with the majority form a government and decide the PM. You never had the choice of who was PM.

This!
I think he’s the best person for the country although I’d have been happy to see him as Chancellor too.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 24/10/2022 14:36

It's all been planned, we have all been completely set up. Corrupt criminal globalist Tories.

Like they have in Wales when Dripford took charge

RisingSunn · 24/10/2022 14:37

So who did you want to take over from Truss?

Theimpossiblegirl · 24/10/2022 14:37

Not a Tory but while we're stuck with them, here's hoping Rishi can fix some of the mess he and his party have made. Won't hold my breath though...

onlymeets · 24/10/2022 14:37

The man who misplaced 40 billion you mean...

Sarahconnor1 · 24/10/2022 14:37

The bigger issue is that any old Joe can be a Conservative party member

Any old Joe could also be a Labour party member.

No longer a proud tory today, just canceled my membership. This was the last straw for me and many more members I know. Sorry you can only push your members so far.

took you long enough! Guess you still want Liz Truss and her fairytale method of adding up?

Sunak is being criticized for his behaviour, and how things are going to become much worse under his government. It's nothing to do with the colour of his skin. It's about him, as a person. This really is race baiting. Pack it in, white people. Stop using race to your own advantage.

Really? So Boris Johnson and Liz Truss were preferable because of their policies? Look where that got us.
