This is not democracy.

Reckon he'll u-turn on the u-turn on the u-turn of his policies?

FamilyTreeBuilder · 24/10/2022 14:16

Not going to happen. What would you like everyone to do about it, or do you just want to moan?

Why is it not democracy? Were you living in some parallel political system in 2019 where you voted for a PM rather than you local MP?

Quite.

I don’t think people understand how elections work. You vote for your MP, the party with the most MPs wins. The leader of that party is PM. That party can change its leader, and they will be PM.

If I never see the phrase “GENERAL ELECTION NOW!!!!!” again because people don’t understand that they don’t vote for a PM, it will be too soon.

It's remarkable that someone could be proud tory for all these years and in all that time never noticed that they didn't elect the PM. Just by coincidence the first time they notice is the first time the PM isn't white. Suddenly they can only be pushed so far.

Absolutely. He's the first Tory PM I actually like (I'm not a Tory but if anyone could persuade me it would be him). The racism and xenophobia of Tory party members disguised as 'ideological differences' is scary.

It's a bloody fiasco. It was a case of lets keep going till we get somebody that isn't a compulsive liar BJ or a complete idiot LT.
The whole thing is ludicrous it's like a game of musical chairs with the most important job in the country.
I'm dreading what Sunak and Hunt will come up with now.

SafeMove · 24/10/2022 14:18

Proudtory · 24/10/2022 14:09

No longer a proud tory today, just canceled my membership. This was the last straw for me and many more members I know. Sorry you can only push your members so far.

This is interesting. How do you feel that the membership have been pushed? No shade at all. I just don't know what you are thinking because I am not part of the Conservative membership.

This....

caringcarer · 24/10/2022 14:19

I have voted Conservative all my life but I can't vote for snake Sunak. It is democratic though as country voted Conservative for 5 years until 2024.

Namechangeforthis88 · 24/10/2022 14:19

On the plus side, DFIL is going into orbit over this.

LizzieW1969 · 24/10/2022 14:20

It is part of our Parliamentary democracy, in that we vote for the party not the PM. The leader of the largest party is the PM if they can command a working majority in Parliament, which Sunak can do as the new Tory leader.

But this is a very bad look, and I absolutely agree that we should have a GE now, it’s become ridiculous.

RishyWashy · 24/10/2022 14:20

The man who brings down the last prime minister wins. I wonder who will take him down. Of course the only reason people might not want him must be to do with racism. Not because he's going to make life for the middle much harder.

Theluggage15 · 24/10/2022 14:20

It’s not really surprising the Tory members will be upset about this. They’re of a certain type.

Stars71 · 24/10/2022 14:21

onthefencesitter · 24/10/2022 14:07

I would like him to sort out the mess that the Tories have caused so that when Labour get into power in 2024, they would inherit better finances and can actually deliver on their manifesto commitments.

I wouldn't count your chickens ...

You won't be voting for him unless you live in Richmond

theworldhas · 24/10/2022 14:24

So will his Mrs finally start paying tax now?

I’m not sure how the coronation of another posh out of touch Tory is going to solve the decade+ of problems created by posh out of touch Tories.

DamnUserName21 · 24/10/2022 14:25

Namechangeforthis88 · 24/10/2022 14:11

I don't understand why it isn't democracy? What have I missed? You never get to vote for the PM, you vote for the representative for your constituency, then the party with the majority form a government and decide the PM. You never had the choice of who was PM.

Agreed!
As we never vote directly for a PM, where's all the 'democracy' spiel coming from?

Scarlettpixie · 24/10/2022 14:25

We vote for MPs not PMs. I am fine with the elected MPs choosing their party leader. Better that than party members who are more likely to be male, white British, a Leave voter, middle class and living in the south of England.

Proudtory · 24/10/2022 14:25

Funny how all the veiled accusations come out for racism as soon as you don't back some one who is not white, get a grip. May be, just maybe some of us dont have aligned views with his or what he has done in the past, his position or how this has been handled.🙄

happyinherts · 24/10/2022 14:25

Out of the contenders, I think he was / is the best person for the role. He's been Chancellor, he understands economics. He may not be for everyone, but I don't understand the criticism here. Who did people want to be PM after Truss then?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/10/2022 14:25

BMW6 · 24/10/2022 14:13

I don't understand the "this is not democracy" posts - the Conservative party won the last GE, not the Boris Johnson party.

I cannot understand it not being democracy for the conversative party members. They elected a leader who got pushed out and replaced by the person they had rejected without having any say.
