AIBU to expect on dating sites for men around my age group 40-50 to be able to write a sentence like an adult rather than it being like I am communicating with a 12 year old on Snapchat..... They still write 'u', 'wot', '2', 'ru', 'ere', 'b', 'cud' (I could go on)... My absolute favourite is the question 'wot u up 2'.. Surely to goodness I'm not expecting too much?

I wouldn't mind.

it seems s quick way to narrow down the men you do want to meet!

UWhatNow · 24/10/2022 00:39

I agree with you - it would put me right off.

mamabear715 · 24/10/2022 00:39

Ugh.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/10/2022 00:41

I wouldn't give those idiots a second of my time. I can't express in words how unattractive that is.

Pixiedust1234 · 24/10/2022 00:45

I think its great. At least you are forewarned they will give you the ick and can you can stop communicating right now instead of wasting your time.

Same for those who think sexual remarks are funny and just banter.

Next!!

Netflixandaps · 24/10/2022 00:48

Or those who mention sex within the first 2 messages....like why? If I wanted that I'd be on fabswingers..... 😂

OP posts:
StoneofDestiny · 24/10/2022 00:54

Not setting the bar too high asking people to write full works in full
sentences. Delete and move on.

FurnitureDisease · 24/10/2022 00:59

These types baffle me. I look back now at old Facebook posts and CRINGE at how we used to WriTe ThinGs LiKe ThIs to be CoOl InNit 😂

In fact we were worse, “Wot U Up 2” was simply “WUU2”

I’m 33 for context

That and the instant sex conversation = get in the bin 🗑 when I was OLD

Helps weed them out though if casual isn’t your thing

Netflixandaps · 24/10/2022 01:08

I am 47 so it's just startling that grown arse men are that lazy.

To whoever said block them, it would (no joke) be roughly 95% of them.

OP posts:
LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 24/10/2022 01:09

I wouldn’t even reply to that filth TBH!

Charlize43 · 24/10/2022 01:11

Never too sure why people waste their time on those. All you ever hear are horror stories.

Netflixandaps · 24/10/2022 01:13

So I asked the last one this (out of about 11 today who's shortened words)...

'Genuine question, are you so busy you can’t write out the word ‘you’ or ‘what’… those extra 3 letters too much? 😂'
And his response..... 'Im a lory drver, Iv alwys dun it'....

I actually give up.

OP posts:
Netflixandaps · 24/10/2022 01:17

@Charlize43

I'm an optimist... always hopeful that there might be a decent one. I met my last partner on a dating site, that lasted just about 4 years, but he cheated, was abusive and a narcissist who's fave pass time was gaslighting the shit out of me, but I don't blame the site, I blame him.

YANBU using text speak in 2022 is a surefire way to say, "I can't move with the times".

BlusteryLake · 24/10/2022 01:25

Just think of it as an extra filter on your search. OLD is partly a numbers game, so anything that helps you decide quickly whether or not to respond is always helpful!

Yes, this.

I would find it a complete turn off. It irritates me if friends communicate like that, now I think about it.

smooththecat · 24/10/2022 02:01

People who do this text speak are generally older, it comes from the time you had to press all the number buttons on a phone to do texting. Young people don’t do this.

TheCurseOfBoris · 24/10/2022 02:04

If you're attracting lots of men like this then you may have to change your profile or more importantly your preferences. If they can't be bother to make an effort on the first communication then bin them.
Plenty more fish in the sea etc. You might want to have a look on the relationships board under OLD. Lots of helpful advice.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 24/10/2022 02:59

It should be
"Wot r u up 2?"
So, you are not being unreasonable!
Or, as we are on Mumsnet, I should say that
UANBU - 🤭

ChagSameachDoreen · 24/10/2022 03:00

How's u?

🤮🤮🤮

Batiqueattic · 24/10/2022 03:11

I read that as 'fabs wingers' and took far too long to work out what you were trying to say. I got there in the end. That's what happens when you're on MN at 03:20. 😂Good luck with wheedling out the morons OP.

Dunnoburt · 24/10/2022 04:32

H8 txt spk!!!! YANBU.....made me chuckle 😃

Girlsontour · 24/10/2022 04:38

I am in the USA and I read some study recently that textspeak, bad grammar and incorrect spelling was the number one reason women rejected men who they otherwise liked on dating apps so you are not alone.

Ivyruin · 24/10/2022 05:37

I think it's common! I'm still in my 20s but I run a huge team of men and they all communicate this way to me. These are very smart, highly trained engineers too!

But yes, it massively puts me off men who can't string a sentence together.
