How to cope with my parent’s political views?

I’m staying with my parents at the moment, in their early sixties.
How do you cope with differing political and cultural views?

I’m getting so angry the more conversations we have.

My DM doesn’t agree with gay marriage…she also has a totally differing political viewpoint to me and my DP.
I’m finding myself getting more and more angry.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes. I do. I disagree vehemently with that view but they are alĺowed to hold it.

"Older generation". The OP's parents are only early 60s. Hardly elderly.

And, to act on those bigoted and unpleasant views? And to vote in a government that would act on those bigoted and unpleasant views?

Erm…..yes. I am not the thought police. i may not agree with those views, but people are entitled to their views as long as they are not illegal. life isn’t as black and white as you seem to think.

People are allowed to have different views to you. If you can’t cope with that maybe you should consider anger management.

60 is old if you are under 20 to 25 and your parents are about 20 years older than you.

Then I'm sorry your knowledge of current political events is so poor that you can't clearly see the misinformation the poster is sprouting.

I thought the word in bold would help make it clearer.

So, if you were a young Polish or American woman, and your parents had the view thar all human life is sacred from the point of conception, and they and their demographic overwhelmingly voted in a government or legislature that enacted the abortion ban they had promised, meaning that you were in terror of an unplanned pregnancy, would you give a tinkly little laugh and say "Well they're entitled to their opinion! Takes all sorts you know!"?

The thing with lefties is that they generally agree with free speech if you are saying things they agree with. If you are freely able to speak about things they find offensive then they want to shut you down.

Depends what you mean by act.

Some acts will be illegal if they are followed through leading to harm to others, while others won't.

Giving a tinkly laugh in front of them and being low contact - so not living with them - may stop them reporting you to authorities if you do have an abortion simply because they won't know about it.

You forget there are people on this board who have to deal with shit every day. Some you can stand up to while others you decide to ignore.

How you deal with it is by realising that there isn't, or shouldn't be, such a thing as wrong think, and you respect the fact that everyone is allowed to think what they like.

You seem confused. Multiple posters have said people are entitled to their views, as long as they are not illegal.

discriminating against someone because of their race is against the law. A person holding racist views, while unpleasant, is NOT breaking the law. Assaulting someone because of their race, however, would be against the law. How “acceptable” you or I feel it is, is neither here not there.

It is fine to have different political views but there are things that are non-negotiable: racism, xenophobia and homophobia are not acceptable. Which is why I don't want anything to do with people who have right-wing views.

Not agreeing with gay marriage is not about ''politics''. It is suggesting that gay people should not have the same rights as straight couples which I find distasteful and bigoted.

Look: speaking from the "educated world": Opinions form actions. Opinions have consequences in the real world. If people hold hateful, bigoted Opinions that aren't challenged, they will tend to support groups- legal OR illegal- or vote in political parties that act on those opinions. And then...other people suffer. Gay people suffer. Women of reproductive age suffer. People of colour suffer. Etc.

And that's why it's not OK to hold some "opinions". Which is not a term I like, anyway. Whether interest rates should be raised or not is an opinion. Whether grammar schools should be reintroduced nationally is an opinion. Whether gay people should be locked up or whether women should have a right to abortion is damaging bigotry.

Well challenge them on their views if you're prepared to be challenged back.

I find it's often not worth the effort though.
