How to cope with my parent’s political views?

Blacktigerstripes · 23/10/2022 21:33

I’m staying with my parents at the moment, in their early sixties.
How do you cope with differing political and cultural views?

I’m getting so angry the more conversations we have.

My DM doesn’t agree with gay marriage…she also has a totally differing political viewpoint to me and my DP.
I’m finding myself getting more and more angry.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I don't mind being with people who don't share my political views, and it's even better if they don't mind being with me. We don't all think the same 🤷🏻‍♀️. If I vetted all my contacts to check they voted the same way, had same stance on abortion, trans rights, Brexit, fisheries policy, airport taxes, education etc I'd have a very small and boring social circle.

User17956743 · 23/10/2022 21:56

Are you in a gay marriage yourself and they don't approve

If you get angry with other people’s political views, you are the problem. Get some help, it’s not healthy.

Quite right, and notice how it's always people saying 'I'm so angry and annoyed X doesn't think as liberally and caringly as wonderful acceptable me, how can they?!'

Imissmybabygirl · 23/10/2022 21:57

No one should force their opinions on others.

Just stop talking about politics.

PinkFrogss · 23/10/2022 21:58

So this is going to turn into a left bashing thread then Hmm OP is asking for advice not a debate.

I have alot of friends with different views to me, I don’t think I’ve ever met someone with the exact same views. There are some things that I draw the line at though, and while I will be civil with someone who holds certain views I wouldn’t be friends.

I don't know it depends. I'm Black so there are many things I don't agree can be brushed aside or viewed as 'differing opinions' - I've always envied people who have the lives where someone's entire identity can be brushed aside as merely a quirk. But anyway, now that you're there you just have to tough it out I guess. I'd leave but again that's because I don't see these things as just 'differing ideologies'.

Exactly this, very well said.

VladmirsPoutine · 23/10/2022 22:00

Apart from anything else why have you name-changed to post this specific thread? Curious really...

CantFindTheBeat · 23/10/2022 22:00

I imagine as they don't believe in same-sex marriage, they are likely to be homophobic.

Living with homophobic and/or racist parents isn't a great foundation for a happy life, so I suppose I'd put my energy into a plan to move out?

Is gay marriage a political issue?

My thoughts too! Guess lots of things can be put down to politics.

I think its safe to say her parents would vehemently disagree with the OP views too.... takes two to tango!

Me an my mum had very heated debates, we both enjoyed it and would often win each other around, she voted Remain, previously a brexitier and she got me to vote LibDem & to see the error which was Jeremy Corbyn, i was initially a fan.

But many people are very intransigent, so avoid the subjects or each other.

Cuppasoupmonster · 23/10/2022 22:02

Oh we have this issue with the in laws (we don’t live with them though). We don’t bring it up. They do! They have a gleam in their eye, I think they enjoy ‘prodding’ us to see what we say and they enjoy our annoyance.

The problem is politics used to be a kind of abstract thing, it affected your life but maybe not as hugely directly as it does now, so it didn’t feel as personal until recently. It’s hard to know my in laws support a party that is forcing us to sell our home because we can no longer afford the mortgage, and that have merrily stripped away our EU citizenship, and had us driving our sick child to A&E after waiting 8 hours for an ambulance that never arrived. In fact it really hurts.

You don’t employ people with left wing views, because you think they’re intolerant? The irony on that is honestly hilarious.

To answer your question - the “views” in question are along the lines of racism, homophobia and misogyny. The people I know who hold these views are more often right wing, although certainly not entirely.

The world would be a very boring place if we all
felt the same.

However strongly you feel about your opinions, someone else will feel just as strongly about theirs.

Lifes short. Chose what you give a shit about wisely.

PinkFrogss · 23/10/2022 22:03

Also I think PP has a point about OP being a new poster or NCer.

Theres been a couple of threads recently like this where someone close to OP holds a controversial opinion, there was one about the little mermaid not being played by a white actress, and another one by the same PBP.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 23/10/2022 22:03

Don’t talk about politics.

They ain’t gonna change

Stationsofthecross · 23/10/2022 22:04

Do they have to agree with you views/support your party OP? Are they not allowed their own opinion?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 23/10/2022 22:06

@Blacktigerstripes

Ever thought about growing up and accept that other people have views that differ from yours?

EmmaH2022 · 23/10/2022 22:06

Keyansier · 23/10/2022 21:40

I am gay and couldn't care less if someone agrees with gay marriage or not. It's legal. Why are you bothered? Are you one of those people that get offended on behalf of others whilst the "others" you are "defending" are secretly cringing in embarrassment?

Well, if OP is gay, it's a problem.

I dumped a friend who said I can't be British because I'm not white. I didn't have a go at her, but it isn't a friendship I can continue. She couldn't see why.

Being homophobic isn’t a political view, so this doesn’t seem political as such.

Do you have DC? I’d be concerned at their reaction if DGC was gay, for example.

If they just quietly hold their views and wouldn’t be nasty to someone about it I would just avoid bringing it up.

Not agreeing with gay marriage isn't inherently homophobic. You know the main reason lobby groups like SW didn't go after it for a long time was because the opinions in the gay community were so divided on the question.
