To think DH comment about Liz Truss could be final straw?

IveGottaGetOutOfThisPlace · 20/10/2022 20:29

DH can be a bit of an idiot. Getting more right wing in his old age. Went through a stage of reading a load of nonsense online. Jordan Peterson etc.

News was on. And he just turned to me and said

"I've been reading some alternative theory behind all this. And I think it may well be the globalists who have forced Truss out"

When I asked who these globalists were, he just said

"The people in charge. Jeremy Hunt. Banks"

When I started to question it, I could feel it was gonna get into an argument v quickly so I just left to do the laundry

Things have been bad for a while. How batshit barmy is this comment? To me it feels totally crazy. I don't know if I can be with someone who feels so distant in the way he thinks the world works.

What do others think? Am I being ott to think this is some seriously worrying shit coming out his mouth?

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches Thank you for explaining.

How was she threatening groups like BlackRock? I thought her policies would help that type?

Actually someone will ask me to explain that

so my thinking is
it will be harder to get mortgages
there will be fewer individuals buying homes and more companies like BlackRock buying apartment blocks and land to build on. It seem like Trussonomics goes in favour of that? Also especially if she really wanted to ditch employmemt rights, those global firms would be more likely to set up here.

This happened to my dad. He's pretty much gone now and lost a lot of his relationships and put a strain on ours. I don't think it will get better any time soon OP

We're going through this with my mum. It's only recently become clear to us. I did ask for advice and support on MN but got shouted down and told I was being intolerant of other people's views and opinions and was judgemental and horrible basically.

If you're interested OP (or anyone else) I have just started reading this:

Count yourself lucky.

My DH fancies her Liz Truss.

You are suppose to blame immigrants for the reason you can't afford to rent or buy a home. 🙄

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/10/2022 21:03

Talking about “globalists” really does usually mean Jews. It’s almost always thinly disguised antisemitism.

It's incredible naive to think otherwise.

HyggeandTea · 20/10/2022 21:04

Well a few of the broadsheets have suggested there is some infighting and backstabbing, and the last time I looked, it was okay to be right wing.
Jordan Peterson is a clinical psychologist, and I have enjoyed studying his research. I don't always agree with him, but the articles I've read are peer reviewed.

I think you both need to calm down a bit and get some fresh air.

IntentionalError · 20/10/2022 21:08

This makes no sense at all. Truss became PM because she won a leadership election in the Conservative party. Her opponent in the final round was Rishi Sunak, a Stanford educated former Goldman Sachs banker who is married to the daughter of a foreign billionaire. If he isn’t a ‘globalist’, who is?

The electorate who chose between them were not ‘globalists’. They were, for the most part, xenophobic, little-English suburban pensioners. Which is why they didn’t choose the globalist ex-banker…

PermanentTemporary · 20/10/2022 21:13

If dp started talking like that I'd certainly put a mark in the 'had enough' column but it would only be one mark.

All these theories are comforting because they rely on the idea that someone planned what just happened. The idea that actual grown up people really thought a dimwit backstabber like Truss would make a good PM is quite scary.

I suppose I agree that there are quite a few people who think low taxes and supply side reforms are great, some will be Tory members, and they grabbed the opportunity to vote for her. But that's not really a conspiracy, just a failure to realise that there's a reason we have elections and election campaigns where candidates have to explain what they want to do to the entire electorate, not just their mates.

So you'd consider leaving your DH over a random comment about a situation which effects neither of you personally?

I don't think he's the one who's batshit...

Wait a minute....

You think that what's going on with the UK government doesn't affect people personally? What planet are you on?

Coraline353 · 20/10/2022 21:17

The Guardian today certainly link the term globalist to anti semitism

Peterson is a deranged, right wing, mens rights activist adjacent moron. That some of his writing is peer reviewed doesnt mean a thing.

OP: as others have said, it sounds like he's going / gone down a rabbit hole. I couldn't respect anyone who held these beliefs let alone have them as a partner. You don't have to have what others consider a "good" reason to end a relationship, you can just do it because you want to.

Only if your very confused or just slinging mud trying to claim people are racist for not liking globalists.

you’re

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/10/2022 21:24

I've just had to Google 'globalist' as I genuinely didn't know what the word meant. The dictionary definition sounded OK to me... But I'm guessing Freddy and DH mean the Urban Dictionary definition? Cos that's properly batshit.

We can't even muster up one government, let alone a secret shadow government - they'd have left their secret shadow masterplan on a train by now and it'd be all over the Daily Mail.

I thought “globalists” was “code” for Jews

It is.

BiscuitLover3678 · 20/10/2022 21:28

You had me at Jordan Peterson.

He honestly sounds like such a tool (and not the smartest one either).

IveGottaGetOutOfThisPlace · 20/10/2022 21:29

@Coraline353 thank you for sharing that article. I just read it to DH and he said "what a load of shit" and then just read out the dictionary definition.

I mean apart from the argument about the definition of globalist, I also can't get my head round the idea of LT being bought down by anything other than her own incompetence.

Of course we can disagree but his opinions seem pretty extreme to me and also illustrative of a pretty weird/naive/paranoid world view.

I spent a day with an old male friend and he was just as right wing. Used to be a lovely person. Turned out the only news he watches is GB news. Told me he was capable of filtering out the 'nonsense'.
I told him that people said the same about Hitler in the '30s.
I won't be spending time with him again.
It's why at 60 I'm single.

I’ve been listening to the odd bit of GB News on the radio over the past couple of weeks but don’t watch it on TV. I am interested in understanding the more right wing viewpoint and hearing what they think of the situation. I’m the only one in my birth family to have voted remain btw so I’m not looking to be influenced by what I hear. It’s to decrease my irritation at the crap I am subjected to and hone my arguments if anything.

Herejustforthisone · 20/10/2022 21:29

Jesus. The weak minds of some people is desperately alarming.

It’s made worse by the fact that he doesn’t even understand the paranoid, delusional, irrational, antisemitism with which he’s aligning his own viewpoint.

I've read a few accounts of people who've effectively lost loved ones to the QAnon rabbit hole. Heartbreaking stuff. Much loved family members whose whole lives become consumed by their total devotion to and belief in bizarre right wing conspiracy theories. I hope you're able to make some progress with your mum. Ha!

Towcat15 · 20/10/2022 21:37

You will regret starting this thread op!

In the meantime whilst it’s hard you need to ask him a few more questions to find out how far gone he is but it does sound like the start of him heading down the qanon rabbit hole.

I lost my (now ex) dp to this and there is literally nothing you can do. I held on for over two years (and still am to a certain extent) but wish I’d cut all ties the moment he started whispering of globalist conspiracies.

So he is too stupid to even know what the conspiracy theory that he believes in is about?

Yeah, that sounds about right for a racist.
