Any Tory voters here who are switching to Labour this time?

Curious because I think this rarely happens and I can't see Labour getting in, I don't think Tory voters change their mind. Am I very wrong? Do you/have you?

Yes, most people have a blind allegiance and don't decide based on the manifesto at the election.

This will be on both sides.

What percentage switch? This can probably be worked out by the landslide years and comparing

I don’t think it’s particularly ‘fervent right wingers’. But obviously it’s not going to get a cross section of entire population.

It'll also pull in Tory influencers.

No idea but you get used to posters names and who is likely genuine

Mind you a Labour influencer wouldn’t be earning their keep if they don’t post on it too

If they hurry and have a GE I shall vote for some no hope Party. We are in a Tory safe seat; they weigh the votes rather than count them!

But I am moving soon to a Raging Woke LibDems constituency. There I shall vote Tory.
Recently I joined the Tory Party, so recent that I did not qualify to choose Sunak or Truss. Three months, I think.
Why did I join you are thinking. I loathe and detest Socialism. I was afraid of Corbyn and his team: McLusky, Milne, and most of his cabinet (as proposed).

??? 😲

There is nothing for me to vote Labour for, I don't believe them, I don't trust them and I certainly don't like what they stand for similarly the Conservatives make me feel the same way.

Truth be told none of them appeal to me. At all.

I need a party that appeals to the middle folk, the ones never spoken about not the lowest earners and not the top ones. The Inbetweeners I shall call the party!

How is that not exactly what the lib dems are?

THisbackwithavengeance · 20/10/2022 18:31

Haven't read all the thread but yes, voted Tory last time and now I think it's time Labour get the chance to put their money where their mouth is. I like Keir Starmer and think he will make a decent PM if he's not dragged down by the extremists in his party.

The Tory party are a laughing stock.

caringcarer · 20/10/2022 18:31

GE won't be for 2 more years. There will also be boundary changes. I have voted Conservative ally life. I am appalled at MP's bringing down their PM. First Boris then Liz. If Sunak is PM I won't vote for him. If a unity candidate is found and can unite MP's behind them things might get done. I will consider in 2 years before next GE but I do not like Angela 'big mouth' Raynor if she was leader could never vote for her. Don't like Starlmer either but better than Raynor.

I need Labour to step up. If they don't do it now, when everyone is crying out for someone to lead the country, then when will they do it? Absolutely cannot vote for cowards.

Labour were actually the instigators of last night's vote & it was a very clever move!
It was basically forcing MP's to choose between losing the Whip or voting not to ban Fracking which for those MP's with a potential fracking site in their constituency was political suicide!

However no one could have predicted how absolutely spectacularly the Tories cocked that up!

ShinyGreenGrass · 20/10/2022 18:34

Labour said they would put taxes up, as well as allow the whole world to move in, the idiots

Newcatbrowntail · 20/10/2022 18:34

I’d naturally vote Lib Dem at this juncture, but I have been put off by the Surrey Heath twitter and social media, It’s off the scale TRA misogyny and nastiness, unable to engage in debate.

Bywayofanupdate · 20/10/2022 18:35

I couldn't vote Labour. We need someone in the middle. Just someone fair I guess

FridayTheThirteeth · 20/10/2022 18:37

"If there is a GE I will read the manifestos and then make a decision.
How else would anyone sensibly make a decision ?
I mean, do people just have some sort of blind allegiance to one side or the other and vote for them no matter what ?"

Sadly, the country is full of fools with exactly that, a blind allegiance to one party. They could destroy the country and they will still vote for them. Policies it appears are pointless to some. Odd isn't it.

Mamamia7962 · 20/10/2022 18:40

Have always been a Tory voter but I really think Liz Truss was out of her depth. I would never vote Labour with Kier Starmer in charge. He looks and sounds like he's from the 1970s.

I’ve never understood why people purport to be lifelong supporters of one party. Political parties change direction and what you might have supported ten years ago, might be totally different now.
I look at the manifestos and select the one that most nearly matches my opinion, plus looking at the candidates and their background and views. Having said that, I don’t see myself voting Tory."

Ah, but then you use thinking skills and your brain rather than just sticking to the same party rather than looking at their policies and how good/bad they are and record of doing what they say......

No wonder the country is such a mess

Starmer seems to be about as centrist as they come, and you still won’t vote for him.

Blindly sticking to one party is exactly what most people do. It’s very uncommon to switch allegiances.

And very few people read manifestos.

But I think you realise this.

Abei · 20/10/2022 18:46

I might vote SPD next time. I would never vote for labour.

You’ve just described labour.

Abei · 20/10/2022 18:47

Labour is full of idiots. Imo.

AngelinaFibres · 20/10/2022 18:50

Cattytabby · 20/10/2022 14:32

I want to, but I just can't. The only thing I can say about Labour is they might be slightly less bad. And then Keir Starmer speaks...

Exactly this.

FourChimneys · 20/10/2022 18:53

There is nobody to vote for. Torys, obviously not. Labour and LibDems don't care about women's safety and are far too woke.

Marginal parties are irrelevant. I may have to abstain.

To be honest I think the astuteness of ‘voting on manifestos’ is a tad overblown.

We know that a Conservative manifesto (for example) will be fundamentally based on conservative political ideology. A large swathe of the population will already have determined, quite reasonably, whether they can get behind that philosophy or not.

On the left it’s a little trickier because there’s a wider range of parties but, given our electoral system, weighing up manifestos is often a secondary concern to tactically voting against the Conservatives.

Obviously if you have no strong ideological opinions or are otherwise a true centrist, then the manifestos do become more relevant.

Hoppinggreen · 20/10/2022 18:54

I am.
i have been voting for almost 30 years and never voted anything other than Tory. I was a YC at Uni.
You would probably peg me as a Tory voter - a Lab candidate told me he wasn’t even going to ask once.
BUT I am very pro EU and after Cameron I will never vote Tory again. I flirted with The Libs for a bit (met Ed Davy and whatsername) but was unimpressed.
I met Starmer briefly and liked him, met Burnham a few times (he made me a cuppa) and I think there are some smart women in that cabinet.
So while it will go against who I thought I was I think unless there are drastic changes in the next 2 year SATS I will probably vote Labour
I am GC though and Labour worry me from that perspective but The Tories are so utterly awful I can’t vote for them again

Labour - for the working classes, support unions and workers' rights, all about good working conditions, for the many, not the few.

Conservative - for the middle classes, support the family, and traditional values therefore against "progress" away from said traditional values (so disliked by "progressives", but that's good because we are upholding traditional values).

These are the assumptions we grow up with on one side or the other to some degree, depending on your parents, and most people carry that on.

My parents live in a very conservative area and in their 70s/80s have never voted anything else. They are planning to vote labour in the next election as are many of their traditionally conservative friends.
