Any Tory voters here who are switching to Labour this time?

Curious because I think this rarely happens and I can't see Labour getting in, I don't think Tory voters change their mind. Am I very wrong? Do you/have you?

@TightDiamondShoes who are the dodgy as fuck team behind him ? Curious to know.
Basically no one can really articulate why they won't vote labour(apart from the single minded GC types). Just pearl clutching hyperbole from folk who probably live in a affluent m/c bubble and have never been effected by tory policies yet..

Nobody has to tell you anything. The question was would Tory voters swing to Labour. Many have said no. That is their choice, not yours.

This. I'm historically a swing voter. I won't vote labour. There is no requirement for anyone to justify their decision to angry labour supporters. Or anyone to be fair.

I'm a Tory member currently. I will also vote for the next leader as I see fit. I don't need to justify my decision or vote to anybody else.

Agree all these angry Labour supporters are off putting more than anything.

I’ll decide at the time when I see the policies / manifestos.

Stars71 · 21/10/2022 09:30

It's because of attitudes of (some)aggressive arrogant Labour voters, that some Tory voters don't bother to articulate their views. This thread was going so well until a couple turned up.

Kellie45 · 21/10/2022 09:37

It is amusing to me that people think that the labour party could do any better than the present Tories. Market conditions mean that there is very little I can do in the situation to make things better apart from tax everyone to the hilt. And being the divide the party they are are if they got into power with a large majority they would soon fracture like the Tories are doing. They have not got a strong charismatic leader in Starmer and they are only together atm out of necessity. The hard left will want to see him gone very soon

TightDiamondShoes · 21/10/2022 09:39

I agree @Kellie45 - the economy is fucked no matter who’s at the helm. It’s been a long time coming and the piper needs paying.

”all of this” has just gone to show me how very old I am 😉 - and I do feel for those born after 1990 who’ve only ever seen “good times”.

Yep.

If there is a GE I will read the manifestos and then make a decision.

How else would anyone sensibly make a decision ?

I mean, do people just have some sort of blind allegiance to one side or the other and vote for them no matter what ?

Exactly this.

Also, I hope Labour start moving into reality when it comes to TWAW. But I like Rachel Reeves, and her economic policies. I like Keir generally - I think he's principled and relatively honest. I know so little about the Lib Dems - I would be interested to see their manifesto. I think it's fair to say that I would take the Conservative manifesto with a pinch of salt, as they seem quite happy to rip them up at a moment's notice.

Tegelflughafen · 21/10/2022 09:56

But keen on millionaires cutting public services and financial support for the struggling no ? Oh the irony 😂

Tegelflughafen · 21/10/2022 10:02

@MarshaBradyo you don't have to justify your vote to anyone but the fact that you would let a few gobby posters on MN influence whether you vote Labour or not is perplexing. Who knows whether these people are posting in good faith anyway ? Not unknown for Tory HQ to try to direct public opinion. Who remembers the tory fact checking advert at the leadership hustings back in 2019.

Abhannmor · 21/10/2022 10:04

Some posters worry that there will be a hard left 'coup' in the Labour Party.

In 2019 Johnson staged a coup against Thersesa May. Supported by the hard right. Somehow the 'traitor' label was not prefixed to his name.

Unlike Sunak , whose coup backfired and led to the Truss premiership.

Now you have a 3rd coup which might result in the original traitor and backstabber being reinstalled.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was reelected in 2024 by the people he described as :
' feckless idle drunken layabouts' .

Who will doubtless justify their decision by saying they were worried about a coup in the Labour Party.

Starmer backed Corbyn and his policies in his bid to be PM. You say he’s honest?

Many who left school or college after 2008 have never know 'good times'.

Know many 20 somethings in continuous gainful employment with an actual contract , sick pay , holidays etc ?

Well it’s up to me to decide. As I said I’ll go by the policies at the time. And yes there are probably influencers on here from both sides but you get a feel for who is not.

Mn has many of them and they generally dominate conversation or try to. Labour supporters don’t help their cause, but that’s up to them.

When it gets closer to the time I’ll assess policies and decide on that.

Do you believe Labour has a way out of the global aftershocks of the pandemic?
Spare electricity, for example, do they have a feasible plan for inflation?

Boris was always left of center fiscally, however, the markets have called time. No more spending for UK plc especially on public services or financial support for the population.
Although the rebelliousness within the Tory party is appalling, completely unstable. That for me is the only reason to call a GE, but this would set a precedent calling for a GE every time a government has to make unpleasant decisions or infighting takes hold.

DullAndOvercast · 21/10/2022 10:16

Blindly sticking to one party is exactly what most people do. It’s very uncommon to switch allegiances.

theconversation.com/how-many-voters-really-switch-parties-in-british-elections-what-the-evidence-tells-us-127690

The British electorate is highly “volatile” according to researchers at the British Election Study which begun in 1964.

...

^In 2010, 32% of voters picked a different party than the one they voted for the previous election in 2005. Between 2010 and 2015, 43% of voters switched.
However, in 2017, the figure dropped back down to 33%. This lower volatility is particularly interesting given how much political turmoil unfolded between 2015 and 2017, including the EU referendum.^

Though I'd agree that not many read the complete manifestos instead really on media to interpreted or look at how they come across in the media or in recent years use on-line questionnaire site that match you to manifesto commitments.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2022 10:17

I wouldn’t go for a GE now.

Labour will face big problems if / when they get in as there is very little room now for either party.

One difference is position on strikes and unions - so imo Labour in an inflationary environment is something to watch. If we are past the war then not as much.

Of course they’ll both face issues with this but their policy does diverge.

The other issue id like more information on is how Labour will get consent for green policies in the community - ie is it on shore or off shore etc and who will say yes

TightDiamondShoes · 21/10/2022 10:24

@Abhannmor no, I think an entire generation has been done over by the implication that a degree is “necessary” for so many basic jobs. The only thing they’ve been “lucky” with is the v low interest rates which kept the wheels turning for a few more years.

Abhannmor · 21/10/2022 10:25

SwedishEdith · 20/10/2022 18:17

This thread won't be a reflection though - it will pull in the fervent right wingers. Anonymous polling is more accurate.

It will. And also gender critical feminists - whose concerns I share - who won't vote Labour. But are very unlikely to vote Tory.

Starmer is dull and anal retentive. He reminds me of Douglas Hurd , of whom Alan Clark said : ' he might as well have a fucking corn cob up his arse'.

Ditch the identity crap Keir. Identify with people who want decent schools , hospitals, homes and public transport. KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 21/10/2022 10:30

I really would be willing to give Labour a go but the women's rights thing is just too big an issue for me.

As a pp said where the hell are the Lib Dems? This country is in absolute chaos, the tories and Labour are an absolute shambles so they could be in there cleaning up. They would definitely get in at the next GE but their apathy is very unappealing.

Abhannmor · 21/10/2022 10:32

@RichardOsmansXraySpecs Libdems are totally into the gender woo. As are the Greens.

mamabear715 · 21/10/2022 10:44

As a conservative voter in a Labour stronghold ("I vote Labour because my father did, & his father before him" - ffs!) no, I won't be changing my vote. To my mind, Labour don't seem to HAVE any policies. They just say the reverse of anything the conservatives say. A GE would be disastrous. Labour piss any money that the UK has got, away. The Unions - aargh. Someone has to be responsible & make unpopular decisions - NOT Truss-like decisions, of course.
In the words of the King, dear oh dear..
It's two years (hopefully) until the next GE. I'm hoping we'll have a strong leader who will make good decisions - memories are pretty short in politics!

@Kellie45 - note the use of the qualifier "relatively" 😀I don't think any politicians are completely honest.
