I agree with you @newsaint.

Interesting to read about women who have been pleased to see pro-lifers outside Marie Stopes etc., and been helped to keep their baby: From the Irish Times

The Irish Times? A paper in a country with a population raised on Catholic guilt. You’re talking about a completely different culture to the UK.

FlorettaB · 19/10/2022 16:04

That Irish Times article mentions one woman who was going to a clinic, was given a leaflet by a protester and didn’t go on to have an abortion. It also says that she didn’t actually want to have an abortion. There’s nothing to say that she would have gone on to have an abortion had the protester not been there.

This is the woman who wrote the article

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breda_O'Brien

’O'Brien is a frequent spokesperson for Catholic-based views on political issues such as opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.’

FlorettaB · 19/10/2022 16:05

It’s an opinion piece

KimmySchmitt · 19/10/2022 11:41

Can anyone explain why it looks like none of the Scottish MPs voted?

Cause it's local authority stuff and it's the responsibility of Holywood. Scottish MPs aren't able to vote on England only stuff.

ColinAllOccupantsOfInterplanetaryCraft · 19/10/2022 16:10

Of course my MP is on there, the Tory twat

Damnautocorrect · 19/10/2022 16:12

Don’t want an abortion.
don’t have one

dont you dare take away anyone else’s choices or intimidate them into not having one.

RoachTheHorse · 19/10/2022 16:13

Surprised, but pleased, to see my Tory MP cited aye. I expected him to have chickened out.

Toriesdontcareaboutwomen · 19/10/2022 16:16

’but at least tories know what a woman is’ etc etc right? What’s the saying? Lie down with dogs and get fleas.

Some of the GC sorts who hang around here could do well to brush up on the sex based policies they’re happily supporting…

Why are you deliberately misrepresenting the position?

Many GC women, myself included, are deeply deeply concerned that neither of the main political parties have women's interests at heart.

We are politically homeless.

I'd go further and say if you don't want "meaningless sex" as @newsaint puts it, then don't have it. (But if you do, that's your choice too)
Maybe she can enlighten me as to what "meaningful" sex is

pointythings · 19/10/2022 18:46

I guess if you're claiming sainthood then meaningless sex is 1) not sanctioned by marriage and 2) not directly intended for procreation. This completely fails to understand that sex is 1) pleasurable and 2) essential in holding a relationship together in the vast majority of circumstances (there are exceptions). It's a very narrow world view, but not surprising for one of the forced birther brigade.

TeamRR · 19/10/2022 18:56

How the fuck does that homophobic misogynistic self-interested dickhead Jacob Reese-Mogg keep getting elected?

gendercriticalcomingout · 19/10/2022 19:09

Genuinely, what is wrong with meaningless sex, if that's all you want?

I did that for years - didn't want a relationship and had a series of friends with benefits and fuck buddies.

I don't see why that's anyone else's business?

ChillysWaterBottle · 19/10/2022 20:03

Glad to see my MP voted Aye and that the vote went in favour of establishing buffer zones!

Those who voted against and their supporters should be ashamed.

pointythings · 19/10/2022 21:11

@gendercriticalcomingout well, quite. As long as all those involved are clear on what is expected and up for fun, there isn't a problem. Unless you're very religious, to the extent that you can't handle other people having more fun than you.

C8H10N4O2 · 20/10/2022 09:12

newsaint · 19/10/2022 15:05

@C8H10N4O2

Rees-Mogg, happy to profit from abortion pills

That's another lie.

He never profited from abortion pills. The pills in question were some kind of stomach medicine which, if they were abused, it turns out they could cause a miscarriage.

That doesnt make them "abortion pills" anymore than kicking a pregnant women in the stomach means you have "abortion shoes".

What a stupid thing to suggest, though you probably read it in the paper and accepted it without thought.

Through his hedge funds he invests in pharma companies which make the damned things. The hedge funds which make his millions.

Go do your own research

Valeriekat · 20/10/2022 09:29

They ate abortion clinics, don't be so coy about the name.

pointythings · 20/10/2022 09:31

@Valeriekat virtually every facility that offers abortions also offers other services relating to sexual health, contraception and the like. So it isn't quite as simple as you might like.

Runningwithoutstopping · 20/10/2022 09:44

Unsurprised to see my smug local mp on the list. He very proudly calls himself Dr and always reminds people that he was a gp in the local area in which case you would think he would be aware of the damage done when women are afraid to seek out healthcare, apparently not. I take pleasure in the fact that his safe Tory seat might not be so safe.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 20/10/2022 09:44

I'm actually torn on this, not sure I could have supported that bill as I don't actually think it goes far enough. Before condemning my abstaining mp I'd like to know why he didn't agree with it. Was it because 150m is a derisory distance and in real terms be completely ineffective, change the distance to 1,500m and I might believe it would help but not this.

Mapleapple · 20/10/2022 11:12

Valeriekat · 20/10/2022 09:29

They ate abortion clinics, don't be so coy about the name.

The are family planning clinics, unless you consider contraception, vasectomies, STI checks are forms of abortion?

marniemae · 21/10/2022 17:32

I emailed my MP, explaining that it wasn't a pro life pro choice vote it was about women being able to access legal healthcare safely a long email with personal experiences etc and got this reply.

To name and shame the 110 MPs who voted against buffer zones around reproductive health clinics in the House of Commons yesterday?
pointythings · 21/10/2022 17:53

@marniemae my sympathy goes out to you. You have a forced birther asshole for an MP.

Damnautocorrect · 21/10/2022 18:04

@marniemae what a cunt! You need to get that out there everywhere so every constituent knows and can chose if that’s who they want representing them.

mine gave a long waffling reply which was essentially “it went through anyway”
and “it was a free vote”
