Dear Lord above, I've seen people removed and banned from pubs for less. She's the Home Secretary. What have we come to?

Well thank you for your patronising claim, Mobiledesktop, but as an "average mumsnetter" I am perfectly well aware not only of the extreme power of the media, but also of the fact that Starmer has already been on the receiving end of antagonistic "journalist" taking photos through windows and attempting (and miserably failing) to confect a scandal.

It's laughable to suggest the media haven't already tried it on against him.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Jacob Rees Mogg
David Tenant as Jeremy Hunt
Colin Firth as Keir Starmer
Sheriden Smith as Angela Rayner

Oh this is inspired!!

FourForYouGlenCocoYouGoGlenCoco · 20/10/2022 11:41

Emily Watson as Rachel Reeves?

citroenpresse · 20/10/2022 11:41

David Bamber - Andrew Griffith from the Treasury or Ian Duncan-Smith?

vera99 · 20/10/2022 11:48

In the last hour:
Hunt ally pitches for him to become PM
Dorries pitches for Johnson to become PM
Multiple MPs call for PM to resign
Suella Braverman refuses to do a resignation speech
Kemi Badenoch, for some reason, publicly says she won't be resigning

He's getting an easy ride from the BBC, Guardian, ITV because he is their ideal centre left politician.
I think he's good. There's people around him who will be torn to pieces when it comes to policy.
It's interesting how is front bench is so "white" as well. All the black and brown faces are now 2 or 3 rows back. That's a deliberate attempt to appeal to the "Red wall".

vera99 · 20/10/2022 11:59

Graham Brady just gone in No 10 when last night PM was saying no plans to meet him. Maybe whisky and revolver point has arrived.

Blossomtoes · 20/10/2022 12:02

I could have sworn Lammy was shadow foreign secretary.

pointythings · 20/10/2022 12:04

I think Keir Starmer has had a relatively easy ride from certain parts of the media because he isn't in the process of the most epic clusterfuck in political history. Just a thought.

As for diversity - firstly, the parliamentary Labour party is more diverse than the parliamentary Conservative party. Secondly, we have now all seen what happens when you promote people beyond their abilities. We should not be looking at diversity, we should be looking at competence.

Lastly, let's not forget the way the right wing tabloids targeted KS over 'Beergate'.

justasking111 · 20/10/2022 12:23

If Putin keeps dialling things up. I honestly can't see any of them standing up to him or making a decision and sticking to it. We're hanging out in the breeze defence wise now

citroenpresse · 20/10/2022 12:44

Resignation of the day will be Coffey? Hauled into number 10 to explain her behaviour last night? Hoyle has many pictures?

I suspect Coffey has a few personal demons. She won't be missed

Labour are proposing that Angela Raynor
(a woman that would struggle to read a copy of the Beano) be a member of the cabinet in the next government.
Yeah, you've got me there.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 20/10/2022 12:53

Jake Berry gone in now

So they are looking to change the leadership rules then?

Graham Brady just gone in No 10 when last night PM was saying no plans to meet him. Maybe whisky and revolver point has arrived.

BBC reporting she's now cancelled the meeting with GB...

A Downing Street source has said the PM called the meeting with Sir Graham Brady because she "wants to keep in touch with the mood of the party".

TheGhostOfLiz · 20/10/2022 12:54

They've got to do something soon. Or stop doing anything at all. I'm begging them: I really need to get on with work!

pointythings · 20/10/2022 12:54

@Mobiledesktop I personally think that the hate for Angela Rayner (to spell her surname correctly) is mostly based in horrific classism. We've seen how the Eton and Oxbridge educated politicians are functioning, so let's not assume that education is everything. Rayner's personal style is abrasive, her grammar may not be perfect, but I'd rather have her (a person who has held real jobs in the real world) than any of the current load of hot air we currently have.

And of course 'diversity' isn't just about skin colour - it's also about background, especially in the UK.

The misogyny chucked at her particularly on right-wing sites is truly off the scale. She has a life well lived and struggled for.

Absolutely agree with this. So many people clutch their pearls that she had a kid at 16. Personally I find her impressive. Mum at 16, shadow Secretary of State at 42. Clearly a determined grafter.

TheGhostOfLiz · 20/10/2022 13:01

Apparently not cancelled now :)

Instead Jake Berry and Coffrey have joined them. At this rate Coffrey's going to end up being PM for a day!

justasking111 · 20/10/2022 13:01

I'm tired of professional politicians, school, university, politics, they've never worked outside the hot House of politics. I'm old so back in the day we had real people who'd worked in the private sector, so understood the importance of listening. Had lost out at interview, been sacked. So I like Angela Raynor. She's lived a real life pre politics

citroenpresse · 20/10/2022 13:14

Would be difficult to imagine anyone less like Starmer than Rayner but that they've been able to thrive in the same team says a lot about both of them. Hardworking, ambitious - very funny - and now appointed a Privy Councillor. Brava.
