I see the problem in the Uk is rather fundamental that the media have been allowed/encouraged to destroy all political critical thinking in the UK.
Politics in general terms is not discussed and certainly in more recent years it is all about headlines and slogans. the 'labour don't know hat a woman is' is still being banded about. Labour MPs are either women or are married to one so that line is ridiculous as the work required of MPs has little to do with the subject.
the UK TV and media do not engage in much political and strategic debates that concern the country.

I believe that it is impossible to reach stability within the Tory party as it stands. It needs to go into the naughty corner for some time to reflect and pull itself together. It can't do that while it is in power. We do need a general election to achieve stability. It is terrible timing as we go into the winter, but the Tory party, for the good of the country has to stop pretending to themselves that they can form a coherent government with stable policies and let the country decide what happens at the polls.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 16:00

I do get that the Ms Truss administration wanted to do something different, but the thing that annoys me is they all knew what they would do if she won , so why didn't Mr Brady and the others stop this in its tracks ?
They let them wreck everything and come up with policies that would be unpopular with so many people , yet here we are.

The good news is that the hedge funders are raking in plenty of money. so at least a few people are happy.

I see that larry the cat has asked the buildings maintenance department to install a 'person flap' because he is fed up of them leaving the door open.

They didn't listen to her before and they won't now.

I agree!

An unnamed Cabinet member also believes this.

Completely agree.

The Telegraph are reporting Sunak is 'certain' to stand.

But nothing official yet.

CaveMum · 20/10/2022 16:34

Rishi has to make up his mind quickly - there will be people who might want to stand amongst his supporters, they will stand aside if he declares himself in the running.

Rinoachicken · 20/10/2022 16:36

Its just too easy with our current excuse for a government…and that’s actually pretty horrifying. May has it right - politics SHOULD be fucking serious!!

John Stevens AT johnestevens
James Cleverly will NOT stand to be Tory leader

He wants to remain as Foreign Secretary

I think its important to stress how much influence the current Cabinet now have. The argument is very firmly that those in the Cabinet should stay for 'stability'.

If one candidate can persuade Hunt and other significant Cabinet members to back them in return for retaining their job, then they will stand out.

If you had someone who won over Hunt and Wallace, I think they'd be difficult to beat.

Cleverly is trying to be one of the kingmakers by making this point and stressing how he wants to stay...

CornishTin · 20/10/2022 16:42

I like Tom Tugendhat. Why was he ruled out last time?

CaveMum · 20/10/2022 16:45

TT just didn’t get enough votes last time. Plus he’s not experienced enough for the current situation - he’s not held a major brief and they need to go with a steady hand in my opinion.

ILeclercreturn · 20/10/2022 16:46

To help with the 'immigrants' issue, maybe you should carve 'Abandion hope all ye who enter' onto the white cliffs of Dover.

Don’t know whether to 🤣 or 😭!!!

I like Tom Tugendhat. Why was he ruled out last time?

Too sensible. Too sane. Too 'left wing'.

Not swivel eyed enough.

ILeclercreturn · 20/10/2022 16:58

Just spotted my spelling mistake, sorry. J R Mogg should like it as it has a bit of an old world expression to it. I don't often get the chance to say Ye, these days.

CornishTin · 20/10/2022 16:42

I like Tom Tugendhat. Why was he ruled out last time?

He didn’t get far in the debates, listening to them I wasn’t surprised esp the second one. This time due to not having enough experience.

Croque · 20/10/2022 16:59

There is going to be a real sense of deja vu about this contest. Once the party members have struck out all the asian and black candidates, we will be back with Penny, Tom and Jeremy Hunt.

romatheroamer · 20/10/2022 17:01

Hunt's not standing and anyway the party members want Boris back.

sunnydaytoday0 · 20/10/2022 17:02

Ione Wells
New - I'm told by senior Conservatives that there are MPs talking about triggering by-elections if Boris Johnson is serious about standing to be leader again. I've heard from MPs tempted to, and gathering evidence of defections and resignations in the event of his return.

MPs talking about triggering by-elections - what actions would be needed to do this ?

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 17:07

Jeremy Hunt had ruled himself out

DuncinToffee · 20/10/2022 17:08

Henry Zeffman, Times

Good source reckons 1922 going to impose a nominations threshold of 100 MPs
^^
That will narrow the field very, very quickly

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 17:08

Those opposed to Boris Johnson might cross the floor, but I can't see enough of them doing it really .
