Well, Labour will be happy with Johnson back. Abysmal ratings when he left office and a known fuck-up machine.

Can I say "I told you so!?"

! Well there you go

Well well. It's saying something when Boris Johnson is the great hope. But how? All those who sent in letters to get rid though. It gets stranger by the minute.

A huge % of the membership apparently think he's the best option

However in terms of negative viewing, he scores worse than any other possible candidate.

All Penny Mordant has is a good Speaking voice and the ability to rock an Aliceband IMO.

And a paedophile for a brother...

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/10/2022 14:51

So the conservative party is dead, buried but preparing to haunt us with ghouls from the past.

Johnson needs to fuck off back under his stone, being better than Truss is not an endorsement and inviting the only PM to be charged by police in office would show the Tories haven't learned anything.
Even talking about it is ridiculous.

General election now please.

She’s not her brother.

Lonelycrab · 20/10/2022 14:54

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.

This is all so depressing😞

Spot on.

She’s not her brother.

She not. However it opens issues over security open due to blackmail and the press will have a massive field day with it if she stood for election as PM.

Mordaunt was 15 when her mother died of breast cancer and, following her twin brother in leaving school, she became her younger brother Edward's primary caregiver.

She previously made a big deal of how she had done this (to prove how hard working / in touch etc etc she is).

So it is a toxic point for her that would be used against her.

SleeplessInEngland · 20/10/2022 15:00

John Curtice just now: "whoever wins, my advice would be to enjoy your next 18-24 months in office, because that'll almost certainly be it."

A tory leader lasting 18 months without resigning would be good going at this point!

AHobbit · 20/10/2022 15:00

There will surely need to be a general election?!
I can scarcely believe how many new leaders there have been since David Cameron was elected. BJ tactfully called a general election but realistically people were voting for Brexit, which they got. Surely must break a record?! They're a complete shamble.

Alondra · 20/10/2022 15:07

IrisVersicolor · 20/10/2022 14:24

Brexit was the consequence of Cameron trying to face down the hard ring wing in his party and bring it under control.

Brexit is the logical consequence of the long term euroscepticism that was never based in economic realities once that part of the Tories got control of the party.

Sorry but no. If Cameron had faced the right in his party, the referendum wouldn't have happened. Or he would have made sure that some serious truths instead of lies were told to the people in the UK instead of propaganda like "We send the 350 million a week. Let's fund our NSW instead and vote leave" Cameron was more concerned about his own party than the potential consequences of the referendum, thinking he'll win it. When it was lost, he quickly left so he didn't have to deal with the consequences. Just another PM who was not up to what the country needed and left a mess behind.

Exactly what I was getting at. Look at the furore over Prince Andrew and how the Royal Family have been criticised as a collective. Having a similar situation with the PM (and he has actually been convicted and sentenced to a suspended jail term unlike PA) would be a massive issue for security and reputation. I'm not sure how widely this has been reported but I can't see her being advised to stand.

MilliwaysUniverse · 20/10/2022 15:19

Also, it was very recent - sentencing a couple of weeks ago. It's not a historic case. It's bad optics. Whether that's fair or not is another matter.

Dave20 · 20/10/2022 15:21

Cameron thought the country would vote remain. That’s why he had no plans for when the leave vote won.
He had to go then , he couldn’t remain PM.

IrisVersicolor · 20/10/2022 15:23

Boris is not a new idea, a few days ago an informal poll of Tory MPs showed support for him as a replacement for Truss. We know what Nadine thinks.

That’s why I don’t know if they have the collective sense and unity to present the the country with a leader acceptable to it.

akabluebell · 20/10/2022 15:24

We have to have an election, this is so undemocratic . . .

Well he could have done, he could have negotiated the shit that he created. But it was much easier to leg it.

Former chief whip and Tory peer is saying re Johnson

Boris is a fantasy the number for nomination will be lifted to limit runners and there will be massive pressure on the 2nd candidate in MPs ballot to drop out !

We have to have an election, this is so undemocratic . . .

Unfortunately legally speaking it isn't. In the UK we vote for a party, not a person. The Conservative party won a huge majority and legally have no reason to call an election. Parties are also, controversially, not required to stick to their manifesto commitments.

I weirdly favour stability over democracy right now.

An election now will simply destabilise the country further, yet I don’t know that we can avoid one.

Sir Robert Syms, Former chief whip and Tory peer, that should say

As I said this is unbelievably undemocratic.

Theresa May AT theresa_may
The Prime Minister is right to provide a roadmap for an orderly transition.

MPs must now be prepared to compromise. It is our duty to provide sensible, competent government at this critical moment for our country.

There is a tone of 'I fucking told you so' from someone who KNOWS in this.

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 15:56

They didn't listen to her before and they won't now.
