They will. It will take a lot of horse dealing. Big thing will be getting support of cabinet members. Then party will fall in line with safest looking candidate.

Johnson isn't looking like that candidate.

He didn’t get far in the debates, listening to them I wasn’t surprised esp the second one. This time due to not having enough experience.

Yet he in 2018, wrote a report into Russian money laundering in London and Putin having political influence in the UK, how the UK must stand up to Putin and kick this out.

The people with "experience" ignored this, with disastrous consequences.

Polling after each round, put TT as one of the better candidates.

Experience doesn't really matter/over rated, what counts is having and picking good advisors and a balanced cabinet, not one full of ERG types.

The problem with any of the front runners is that they are all bound up with far right think tanks, like the Tax Payers Alliance, so will all be a disaster.

Whoever they pick wont last.

I'm absolutely loving Beth Rigby's work
In all of this by the way

Rinoachicken · 20/10/2022 17:33

BBC seem to have dropped the mic and camera somewhat - couldn’t hear a word of what Grady just said, and spent most of the time starting at the back of other peoples heads! 🤣

MPs talking about triggering by-elections - what actions would be needed to do this ?

An MP resigning their seat.

CaveMum · 20/10/2022 17:52

There are 357 sitting Tory MPs so in theory they’re talking about a maximum of 3 candidates to take forward.

They have to have the 100 supporters in order to even put their names forward.

TurmericFan · 20/10/2022 17:57

Sorry if I sound like a Russian troll here, but can we at least agree that Sergei Lavrov was absolutely bang-on in his poor assessment of Liv Truss back in February?

Might it just splits into two camps?

Sunak/Hunt/Mordaunt

Johnson/Braverman/Mogg

Then we are fucked if that goes to the membersSad

EdieLedwell · 20/10/2022 18:00

Johnson coming back early from his hols apparently...

LexMitior · 20/10/2022 18:00

@TurmericFan - this is a guy who supports a military who use rape and murder civilians across the Ukraine. Who gives a fuck what he thinks.

The maths dictates that a maximum of 3 candidates can stand. I’d like to think that Boris would struggle to get 100 MPs behind him, but who knows these days. He got 211 votes in the confidence vote back in June, but things went downhill rapidly after that.

crostina1 · 20/10/2022 18:15

I hate Boris but think he may be the best option. Surely he will be on his best behaviour if he gets bacm in? One of the others would come in and try too establish their position and it would cause instability, just like Truss

lol

LexMitior · 20/10/2022 18:17

Johnson does not have best behaviour. He acts like a king. He would regard any vote as endorsement of his dire decision making. Truly, he would actually be worse

He went because 50 odd ministers resigned. They’re not suddenly going to change their minds. The party knows it needs a safe pair of hands. Johnson isn’t it.

ilovesooty · 20/10/2022 18:20

Johnson shouldn't even be allowed to stand.

lifeissweet · 20/10/2022 18:22

ilovesooty · 20/10/2022 18:20

Johnson shouldn't even be allowed to stand.

While he is still under investigation for misleading the house it would be Groundhog Day. The 'wait for the Sue Grey report' saga all over again.

And not while some MPs are threatening to resign. It would be more of the same - and that's the opposite of what they need.

greenhousegal · 20/10/2022 18:24

Remind me again why Johnson was ousted?

Has he had a Damascene conversion in the Carribbean or what?

The fact that his name is even mentioned and may be supported by some members is hypocrisy at its best and a F you to the electorate. The Tories really are becoming a bit of a Dictatorship. I wouldn't even joke about him. He should be political history.

EdieLedwell · 20/10/2022 18:24

I agree, Johnson would be insufferable if he got back in. The sheer shamelessness of him even contemplating a run is breathtaking.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 18:25

I can see it happening: Boris Johnson the return..

EdieLedwell · 20/10/2022 18:26

The good people of Uxbridge and South Ruislip are really getting value for money from their MP aren't they?

Croque · 20/10/2022 18:28

It may be irrational but Boris will always be the feel good candidate. People really want to feel good right now.We could do much worse.

SleeplessInEngland · 20/10/2022 18:29

I can see Johnson enjoying everyone talking about him for a couple of days before saying 'oh no, of course I'm not running' when it becomes apparent not enough MPs will vote for him.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 20/10/2022 18:29

This. Fuck him.
