They won’t if they can avoid it. But they may not be able to agree on a leader that has the confidence of the party. Or the country. Or anyone.

In the very recent leadership contest, they were split all over the place, nothing has changed.

You ve still got the Kwarteng/Braverman wing vs the more moderate left of the party, though who exactly is to the left of the far right Tories is anyone's guess.

urbanbuddha · 20/10/2022 14:06

Tbf to her, that's a hell of a pension in exchange for dragging your own reputation through the mud and a few days work. Not so stupid after all.

Did she actually "serve" long enough to qualify for the pension though?

Lonelycrab · 20/10/2022 14:06

Brexit is absolutely the problem, it’s part and parcel of the hard right ideology

And what Brexit did is rather than see off the threat of the party’s hard right, is fatally fragment the Tories in a way that may not be recoverable

Absolutely this. It opened up a split in the party that grew larger and larger, and realistically will need to carry on splitting until they are two separate parties.

Which was only how it all started anyway.

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 14:07

We sadly havent see the last of Braverman, she is bound to be back in Cabinet to shut the right wingers up.

Kellie45 · 20/10/2022 14:07

Well we’ll have dear old Starmer & Co soon and a high tax, low growth (or zero growth) economy. Get ready to celebrate with cakes and ale!

Brexit was the consequence of a Tory party embracing the hard right policies. The problem with UK politics and the Tory party goes a long way before Brexit.

I shouldn't be surprised but no visble sadness, shame, embarrassment or humiliation for making such a mess of things in 5 weeks. Gives the impression she still believes her 'plan' is right and it's all the fault of everyone who failed to back her. There should be a general election but no way are the tories going to risk that now.

Fingers crossed there'll be a press conference later where she announces her resignation to a grateful nation.

Fingers now uncrossed!

Are you crazy? Johnson hard right? He is centre left wrt the Tory party. For goodness sake put The Guardian down.

Perhaps you'd like to list all the things that have improved in the UK since 2010?

12 years in and we ve had low growth and the highest taxes for 70 years under your beloved Tories.

Brilliant 😁

What are Penny’s credentials? Been said that she is a bit work shy.

What are we really all in for??

It must be a lonely place - supporting a dying chaotic system and bashing out 2019 tropes on the internet. Have you got a good support network in place?

The Tories are still in power for two years. They won’t risk their jobs and call for a GE. What would they gain from it?

Their only hope is a to elect a new leader and get through until the next GE.

They’ll still fuck themselves up though and carry on with a civil war within the party. They can’t help themselves.

Of course they won’t call a general election by choice as they will lose . But what we are seeing is not democratic at this point. We are going to end up in a position where a public mandate was given to the PM before last. They have shown they can not form a stable government. Though there is an MP calling for Johnson to come back as he has a mandate from voters.

scaredoff · 20/10/2022 14:14

All will calm down now during the interregnum. I don't know who we will end up with, but if it is someone with brains, emotional intelligence, and honesty I think they will limp on. Any suggestions as to who has these qualities?

That would be good, but I'm pretty sure it has to be a Tory.

she’s off her trolley that one

Correct Kellie, Bojo was slightly to the left of centre of a far right Tory party that is more extreme than le Pen's RN.

Lonelycrab · 20/10/2022 14:16

What are Penny’s credentials?

I’d say she isn’t as disliked as Sunak by some of the elements in the Tory party.

She also actually wants the job, Sunak it’s less clear he does.

And she’s not completely insane like Braverman.

So I think she’s more likely, by default if nothing else. Just my 2p.

IndigoC · 20/10/2022 14:18

Sunak PM, Hunt Chancellor, Mordaunt Foreign Secretary, feels a solid bet. But I’ve read it would need Boris backers to get over their Rishi rage.

There is talk of an expedited members vote online, which I dread because if Braverman or Badenoch get on the ticket they could win and that would mean more right wing chaos.

BirmaBrite · 20/10/2022 14:18

Might stick a bet on Boris coming back, would pay for Christmas ! and another bet saying we will have 4 PM's by the end of the year, wonder that odds they would give me on that ?

SleeplessInEngland · 20/10/2022 14:18

Graham Brady is really bad at pretending he doesn't love all this increasingly frequent attention.

randomchap · 20/10/2022 14:18

At least it's not chaos with Ed Miliband

Maggiethecat · 20/10/2022 14:18

@Lonelycrab - yes, but is she reasonably up to it?

This personality contest rubbish must stop.
