...or am I just being PFB?

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet two completely different scenarios, a child doing something like licking the floor albeit gross is what kids do sometimes. An adult drinking a boiling hot coffee over a child is completely idiotic

Why?

Presumably they have motion control and have no reason to spill a drink? If you’re on the road you can be the most careful driver going and still have some loon smash into you. It’s statistically riskier taking them out in the car

IHateWasps · 18/10/2022 21:43

I hope you never get in a car or on public transport with your kids?

Well no because I don't have kids. But transport is often necessary unlike drinking a hot drink directly over a child which is never necessary.

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 21:44

It's one of the very few things that HV warn you about.

Genuinely interested to see these stats if you have them?

Is this adults who are holding a baby who may move or startle suddenly?

and babies have much thinner skin than adults and Are much more susceptible to full depth burns that cause permanent scarring.

You have to be of an exceptionally nervous disposition to throw your hands up in the air as a reaction to a baby startling.

Or have a giant baby

templesit · 18/10/2022 21:45

I hate this.

Makes me cringe at soft plays when hot drinks are on the tables the kids are racing around.

YANBU.

Autumninnewyork · 18/10/2022 21:45

Definitely not being being PFB. Mone haven’t been newborns for years and I would never drink a scalding hot drink over a baby’s head. How stupid and unnecessary. Wait for it to cool and obviously drink it to side of the baby, not actually over its head

Hugasauras · 18/10/2022 21:48

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 18/10/2022 21:42

Serious question, how many adults, who presumably drink several hot drinks per day, every day, for their entire adults lives, all of a sudden jerk and spill it if you’re 30yo, and drink 5 cuppas a day, that’s 22,000 cups in your adult life - how many do you suddenly spill for no reason when sitting down?

It's the baby startling in your arms, not the person drinking the coffee getting startled. Babies can fling their arms and legs out randomly and if you have a hot drink in your hand over the top of them, it can easily get kicked or dislodged by a loose arm or leg. I spilled some of my can of coke today because DD2 did a sudden flail with her hands and caught the can as I was raising it to take a sip.

luxxlisbon · 18/10/2022 21:49

Children having serious injuries from hot drinks are very common.
I have a very close relative who is a children’s nurse and as a result it’s one of the things I am most careful about. I’m not precious about baby proofing houses, I don’t pad the corners or line the walls with cushions etc but I am always shocked at the number of people who happily leave a hot tea on a coffee table with a baby or toddler running around.

user1471457751 · 18/10/2022 21:49

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet except you don't need to throw your hands in the air to spill a drink, just tipping it a bit can cause it to spill. And that is easily done if the baby kicks out and knocks your arm.

Hugasauras · 18/10/2022 21:50

If you don't know what startling means, it's the Moro reflex that newborn babies have. When they hear a loud sound or something gives them a fright or even just randomly while they sleep, it triggers the Moro reflex where their hands and arms shoot out at speed.

But a completely unnecessary risk. We often need to travel in cars, we offset the risk by having seatbelts and car seats. We do not need to hold a baby and drink hot coffee for any reason, we ofsett the risk by putting the baby down

Beachsidesunset · 18/10/2022 21:51

badassbaby · 18/10/2022 20:05

Give it a week you'll be making a coffee, cooking the dinner and doing a wee all whilst holding baby 😂

Simultaneously?

Sewannoying · 18/10/2022 21:52

To those questioning tea hotness and sudden spillage, I drink scalding hot tea all the time (as soon as it’s out of the kettle) and frequently spill it on myself, being a generally clumsy person. Fortunately my clothes usually get in the way and so avoid burns, but it does hurt. I can’t believe anyone risking it with a child in their arms.

Yes there is never any need to have hot coffee and baby in the same area at the same time. It is 100% avoidable. The benefit of doing both at the same time is selfish

FlorettaB · 18/10/2022 21:53

So many stupid people on here.

Hot drinks are a huge risk around small children. This is about a 4 year old who pulled a cup of tea onto himself
’I pulled his trousers and his skin came off too. It was horrendous. It happened so fast. It was only on him for one or two seconds."
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-50040051

Children are scarred for life from hot drinks spilling on them. There’s no reason to take that level of risk with a newborn. You check their bath water and their milk every time, why hold water just below boiling over them?

Nymeria6 · 18/10/2022 21:57

What does PFB mean anyone?

peanutbutterontoast7 · 18/10/2022 21:59

@IHateWasps aww thank you! I think over everything I'm just not quick over the shock of it. I never in my wildest dreams thought that would ever happen. I would have we have even thought of it as a risk. I really have been so lucky because the burn wrapped around my eye. I must've blinked and that saved my eyesight. I only have sight in one eye which is the eye which was hit so it really could have changed my life!
I can't bring myself to use a hot water bottle again 🙈

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet I get your point but also have you ever held a new born or a baby? They do make sudden movements and strange sounds...
also would you feel comfy if someone was drinking a boiling hot drink directly over your face? I wouldn't! Trust no one 😂

rainingcats · 18/10/2022 22:03

I have a five year old and still act with extreme caution when drinking a hot drink around him and insist that my dh does the same, I am forever saying move that mug, don’t leave it there ect but would rather come across as an over the top nag then the parent of a severely burnt child.

fjording · 18/10/2022 22:12

Sleepnow · 18/10/2022 20:03

Give it a matter of days and you will be doing the same!

Nope never did that , my 2 are at secondary school now. Could never have forgiven myself if I'd burnt my child just because I couldn't wait until they were down before drinking a coffee

FrankTheThunderbird · 18/10/2022 22:12

tonicwaterparty · 18/10/2022 21:17

What's really unreasonable here is your use of the phrase "a lego". We're not Americans. It's either "...stepping on some lego...", or "stepping on a piece of lego...". Thank you for your future cooperation should this subject arise again.

Grin this. Plus why would there be lego on the floor in a house with a newborn? Newborns don't play with lego!

@queenrose7 YANBU. Sitting and drinking to the side? Fine imo if you're confident holding a baby.
Drinking directly over a baby? No way.

Mariposista · 18/10/2022 22:18

Good Lord I have heard it all now. How is anyone still in a relationship - these poor men must want to run for the hills, being griped at over literally everything.
