...or am I just being PFB?

I would go ballistic if anyone done that whilst holding my baby. Once that child is scarred for life or dead there is no turning the clock back. Is a mouthful of coffee worth the death of your child ?

Over dramatic, much.

Kite22 · 18/10/2022 20:44

I'm a bit on the fence.
Firstly it is unlikely it was 'burning hot' or he wouldn't be putting it in his mouth.
I realise it could still be hot enough to burn a baby if poured over them, however, as others have said, it sort of depends how you are doing it.
It is the sort of thing most of us start off aiming never to do with a new baby, but you soon come to realise that you do still need to drink and you do spend a lot of hours with the baby in your arms, so you generally learn to hold the baby sort of round one side of you and lean over the drink a bit on the other side.

Fair play to you for only being 'annoyed' and not "fumin' " or "furious" or about to leave him over this though as so many posters recently seem to be.

So, ideally, - better if you don't, but, realistically, most of us do drink our tea or coffee when holding a baby, yes.

It's not over dramatic. That's the really of it.

www.cbtrust.org.uk/burn-prevention/awareness-campaigns/hot-drinks/

30 babies and toddlers a day attend hospitals because of burns from hot drinks.

Young children have been badly scalded by drinks that have been left sitting for 15 minutes.

Here's one example. m.youtube.com/watch?v=1CzqTPZe9tg

Have you talked to him about it?

Luxembourgmama · 18/10/2022 20:50

Defo not being unreasonable

Wheredoallthepensgo · 18/10/2022 20:52

No you are not just being PFB.

I've also known a child that had been burned as a baby by a dropped hot cup of tea, it was awful to see the scars all over their throat and chest. They will fade but never completely go.

He can either get a covered and secure lid travel mug or just wait to drink his coffee when he's not holding the baby.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 18/10/2022 20:54

I would be the same as you, OP. Tell him this cannot happen again. He hasn’t got any common sense has he?

Bitterbean · 18/10/2022 20:55

NBU although it would be helpful to have more information, i.e. was he sitting down and had the drink on a side table and moved his head well away when he took a sip type thing, or did he literally just drink a very hot drink right over baby's face? If the latter then yes he is BU but if it's a newborn he may still be learning..

Wheredoallthepensgo · 18/10/2022 20:56

DuckDuckNo · 18/10/2022 20:20

YANBU. My spouse once managed to spill his burning hot tea over our baby. The baby made a sudden movement and he flinched or something and then we got to spend hours in the paediatric burn unit every 2 days or so.

I'm so sorry, I hope your baby recovered well.

Rutland2022 · 18/10/2022 20:56

DH always used a travel cup that wouldn’t spill (I don’t drink hot drinks).

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/10/2022 20:57

Doesn't everyone have to brush the biscuit crumbs off their babies head at some point after taking the opportunity to snack and have a still hot cup of tea/coffee while baby sleeps on you?

Biscuits yes. Hot drinks no. Just not worth the risk.

queenrose7 · 18/10/2022 20:59

I had been in the shower and came back downstairs to see dh sitting on the sofa holding the baby and drinking his coffee over her. He wasn't doing it to the side.

He thinks I'm being dramatic by being annoyed and thinks it's a complete non issue.

OP posts:
Oblomov22 · 18/10/2022 20:59

Of course it's ok. Why would it not be?

Oblomov22 · 18/10/2022 21:00

He's right. Total non issue. Do you have anxiety generally. Maybe speak to HV?

peanutbutterontoast7 · 18/10/2022 21:01

A couple weeks ago I was filling my hot water bottle with boiling water and it exploded all over my face and I was in excruciating pain. I have been seen under the plastic surgeon team in the burns unit. 3rd degree burns around my forehead and eye. Thankfully I will heal and be totally fine.

I never in my wildest dreams expected this to happen!

I'm not saying to be mad at your partner because we don't always see the danger but honestly please tell him to not drink boiling drinks over a baby. Burns are not soemthing to be joked about! I could've easily lost my eyesight.

BeardieWeirdie · 18/10/2022 21:02

My baby knocked my soup while breastfeeding and while it was cool enough to eat and I thought it was out of reach, it took all the skin off one knee. I have never felt so awful. Nobody got to go near her or her baby sister with a hot drink after that. MIL huffed and said “I did bring up three babies myself, you know” - I was not polite in responding. Yanbu

No. she suffers from being a Mother who gives a shit about her baby's welfare. Go to a paediatric burns unit and tell them that the most common cause of burns in babies and young children is a non issue.

Justhereforaibu1 · 18/10/2022 21:08

I cannot believe how many people are siding with your husband! It's totally not OK. I remember in my NCT group 2 of the ladies were nurses and someone went to drink their coffee over their baby and the nurses gently had a word, they said they see it far too often in their hospitals the damage hot drinks can do. I always used a travel mug.

Hugasauras · 18/10/2022 21:09

Boiling hot coffee directly over a baby that can move unpredictably in your arms at any time is just stupid. I prefer not to drink tea with DD2 in my arms if possible but when I do, I drink it off to the side so if it spills it will go on me/the floor and I wait till it isn't boiling hot.

Fucking patronising and ridiculous. She doesn't have anxiety, she's being a sensible mum seeing a very valid risk to her newborn.

Maybe take a trip to a burns unit and talk to some mums there before you spout this rubbish.

Hugasauras · 18/10/2022 21:11

You can bet that if this thread was about a baby being badly burnt because their father was drinking hot coffee over their head while holding them, the 'Are you anxious?' brigade would be on here laying in to the husband 🤷‍♀️

HangOnToYourself · 18/10/2022 21:11

Realistically speaking if probably wasnt scalding hot or he wouldnt be able to drink it. That being said it's always sensible to be careful with hot drinks and babies
