A couple weeks ago I was filling my hot water bottle with boiling water and it exploded all over my face and I was in excruciating pain. I have been seen under the plastic surgeon team in the burns unit. 3rd degree burns around my forehead and eye. Thankfully I will heal and be totally fine.

I never in my wildest dreams expected this to happen!

I'm not saying to be mad at your partner because we don't always see the danger but honestly please tell him to not drink boiling drinks over a baby. Burns are not soemthing to be joked about! I could've easily lost my eyesight.

Bloody hell. That's awful! I hope you are on the mend now Flowers

Oblomov22 · 18/10/2022 20:59

Of course it's ok. Why would it not be?

Isn't it obvious?

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 21:15

It's a non issue until the day it isn't and your child is scarred for life.

DuckDuckNo · 18/10/2022 21:16

Oblomov22 · 18/10/2022 21:00

He's right. Total non issue. Do you have anxiety generally. Maybe speak to HV?

I can actually still hear how my child sounded when they changed his dressings at the burn unit after my spouse spilled his tea on him. The doctor said we were lucky his diaper was thick because otherwise his genitals would have had burns (he got splashed in the tummy & groin area).

I don't know, I'm choosing to believe this thread is full of trolls. The alternative is kind of scary.

YADNBU. A startle reflex from the baby or stepping on a lego and that liquid could be all over the baby. If he wants hot drinks, put the baby down or use a travel mug. Burns on a baby are horrific and occur at much lower temped liquids than adults

What's really unreasonable here is your use of the phrase "a lego". We're not Americans. It's either "...stepping on some lego...", or "stepping on a piece of lego...". Thank you for your future cooperation should this subject arise again.

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 21:18

It's really upsetting me the number of people who think it's worth the risk

Waitingfordecember · 18/10/2022 21:18

You are being a little bit precious, but it’s understandable and I was exactly the same. Maternal instincts to protect your baby plus hormones are a strong combination!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 18/10/2022 21:28

YANBU.

Back in the 60s my dad quit smoking cold turkey when he found himself at 2am juggling a baby, a bottle and a lit cigarette. Took his smokes into work the next day, gave them away and never had another drag in 40 years. He cared enough.

I'd think your husband could go without hot coffee or tea for the duration of holding the baby.

peanutbutterontoast7 · 18/10/2022 21:29

@Hugasauras @queenrose7 aww thank you both, I'm on the other side of it now I think. It was a truly awful few weeks but all will be fine!

Please use me as an example of need be to your partner OP (😅) because I'm a women in my thirties who suffered badly, could you imagine this on a baby?! Absolutely not ok! Baby not being burned is more important then drinking coffee!

SandraOMG · 18/10/2022 21:32

Sitting down with drink on a table and leaning to the side to take a drink is fine imo.

Standing up, holding a baby in one arm and a burning hot drink in the other, even I wouldn't have done and I don't think I was precious at all

Safer · 18/10/2022 21:33

It's not PFB. It's just fucking common sense.

Put your baby down. Drink your hot drink. It's not rocket science.

IHateWasps · 18/10/2022 21:35

Flowers for you too peanutbutterontoast7 I've had 2nd degree burns to my hand and arm and chest before and that was awful enough. I can't imagine how terrible 3rd degree burns to the face would be. It makes me shudder just thinking about it. I hope that you're feeling somewhat better now and heal as fully as possible.

dreamadreamy · 18/10/2022 21:35

I agree with you, I would be furious, it's just not necessary. Whilst nothing happened this time it's so easily done to spill a drink, why risk it.

CarefreeMe · 18/10/2022 21:36

I would not drink a boiling hot drink when holding a baby and I don’t do it if my cat is on my lap either.

You know the consequences of spilling just a small amount could scar the baby for life.

You know there is a 50/50 chance of you spilling it.

So I am genuinely concerned for anyone who thinks it’s worth the risk and must be very selfish if their need for a drink in that moment is more important than their own child.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 18/10/2022 21:36

Wait til you have your second, you’ll be drinking hot drinks while holding them, letting them lick the floor and all sorts

You’re disturbed?

I hope you never get in a car or on public transport with your kids?

user1471457751 · 18/10/2022 21:41

For all those saying as he didn't spill it it's OK would you apply the same logic to drink driving? Hey as long as they don't crash its all fine, right?

HappyMeal564 · 18/10/2022 21:41

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet two completely different scenarios, a child doing something like licking the floor albeit gross is what kids do sometimes. An adult drinking a boiling hot coffee over a child is completely idiotic

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 18/10/2022 21:42

Serious question, how many adults, who presumably drink several hot drinks per day, every day, for their entire adults lives, all of a sudden jerk and spill it if you’re 30yo, and drink 5 cuppas a day, that’s 22,000 cups in your adult life - how many do you suddenly spill for no reason when sitting down?

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 21:42

Could he buy in some of that cold ready made latte that lives in the fridge?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/10/2022 21:42

I think you’re right OP.

I mean there’s all kinds of variables that might make it less of a worry - if it wasn’t really all that hot, if the drink was away from the baby or in a travel cup perhaps. But really it’s not worth the risk.

Its better to put the baby down when you drink your drink, even if they cry for a bit due to being put down, than to have them scarred for life.

My grandmother was scarred for life all done her arm due to having a kettle that was boiling by the fire (olden days! Assuming it hadn’t reached boiling yet as she survived) spill on her as a very small child.

Is this adults who are holding a baby who may move or startle suddenly?

FictionalCharacter · 18/10/2022 21:43

YANBU. And the PPs saying it can’t be hot enough to scald if he can drink it are wrong. That’s why you’re taught to test the temperature of baby formula on the inside of your wrist, not by tasting it.
Try sipping some tea that’s hot but doesn’t burn your mouth. Now pour it over your wrist. I don’t think you want to.
