Will Liz Truss resign today?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 01:00

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

Hope she goes today. Cannot imagine the cheek of her carrying on tbh . Surely there are a number of mps that would fit the bill .rishi sunak seems an obvious choice with experience of being chancellor as well.

MrsTuxedo · 17/10/2022 07:31

She knows it is on her. They can't sack her, so she has to resign. If she does, she will look even worse. Her only chance is to do better, so no, I don't think she will resign.

Forfrigz · 17/10/2022 07:34

People will still vote for them 'bEcAuSe tAx'.
Your taxes are going to look like a fucking footnote compared for your first bill for chemotherapy, hun.

You know the politics are bad when there's a tiny teeny bit of you grateful for JeremyHunt

I've been thinking this for a while...

I've caught myself thinking several times that Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt would be infinitely preferable to Boris, and then Liz.

I never, ever imagined that I would think Gove was the kind of Tory I'd be pleased to see in Government.

I'm at the stage now where I don't care what they're like as a human or what their politics are - just the basics of being one of the 'grown ups' would be a win.

TowerblocksAndSunflowers · 17/10/2022 07:34

rishi sunak seems an obvious choice with experience of being chancellor as well.

The Tory membership explicitly chose Truss over Sunak by quite some margin.
Just parachuting Sunak in is tantamount to a coup.

gogohmm · 17/10/2022 07:35

The only way she can be forced out is a cross commons vote of no confidence to force a general election, which I can't see happening because many conservatives will loose their seats. They can't force a leadership contest until this time next year

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 17/10/2022 07:35

TowerblocksAndSunflowers · 17/10/2022 07:20

Currently their rules are they can't get rid of her for a year. But if they had a majority of MPs who wanted to vote her out, they'd also have enough MPs to vote to just change that rule.

I really dislike that internal Tory party rules get to dictate who is our new PM and they can change the rules to suit themselves. Especially when they decided once and now think they decided wrong.

I'mof the opinion there should always be a general election if a PM has to stand down. I'm not into this unelected PM malarkey. Even more so this time when they are fucking the country over with their extremely bumpy transition.

I don't think there should have to be a GE but I think MPs should pick the new leader. They've been democratically elected, unlike the party membership who don't even have to be eligible to vote in GEs, but have a say in this, just because they've paid to join a party.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 17/10/2022 07:35

In the next 2 weeks she will be gone. However, that's not enough. A GE needs to be called now. It is ridiculous that the electorate are getting no say at all in this shambles.

ManAboutTown · 17/10/2022 07:35

It won'r be today but nor do I think she will last long. The members won't be given a say on the next leader - there will be one candidate a la when May was installed. Agreeing how that will be carried out and by who will take time ro work out behind the scenes. Truss will be there while that process takes place

toomuchlaundry · 17/10/2022 07:35

How does the Labour Party choose their leader?

Tanktanktank · 17/10/2022 07:36

I can’t watch her on tv, she makes me cringe.

Is this right? I thought a new leader could be appointed if they all agreed who it should be

There’s no need for a leadership contest if so and I doubt they think it’s a great process now given where it has got them

Although Mordaunt seemed to back her this morning, they need to just decide.

User38899953 · 17/10/2022 07:37

I don't think she will resign, ever.

toomuchlaundry · 17/10/2022 07:35

How does the Labour Party choose their leader?

Different process to the Tories at the start, but a membership vote in the end.

I think if a party not in power wants to have their membership vote for a new leader, that's fine. In fact that's better, because otherwise how would a party with very few MPs (ie the greens) ever pick a new leader.
But for the party in power, where they're picking the new PM, it should be elected MPs making the decision, in my opinion.

Alexandra2001 · 17/10/2022 07:38

Hunt can't say anything today to calm the markets, the UK has become another Greece (in the eyes of the markets) and we will have to see spending cuts and tax rises.

ALL of this is on Truss and the Tories, the country has been a mess every since Brexit & 2016.

Whether she goes or not, is not the point, the Tories have nothing but far right candidates to replace her - so more chaos.

IMF saying energy support package must be looked at again... a told you so!

Buffypaws · 17/10/2022 07:39

Doesn’t sound like she’s going to outlast the lettuce.

Strange that the Tory party are willing to rip up rule books and ‘democracy’ when it’s suits them but wouldn’t consider backtracking at all on the horrific act of self harm that has been Brexit, the very reason we have the sluggish recovery compared to other big economies. The don’t stick to their principals much do they? It would look absolutely ludicrous for them to drop Sunak into the role, although I agree he would be the best option. Unfortunately the party members didn’t agree though. GE needed now.

CornishTin · 17/10/2022 06:44

I think she will be like Trump and refuse to leave.

It bad, but not that bad.

She might need to be pushed a bit, but even the worst MPs in this country have to respect procedure.

Ha if you think the chaos we are seeing at the moment is bad, go and have a GE....

The UK has become the biggest joke, ever.

I’m not laughing 😔

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 17/10/2022 07:44

If I was Sunak I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

"You want me to come and attempt to clear up the mess I explicitly told you would happen? And then lead the party into a disastrous GE? I think I'll pass!"

Notonthestairs · 17/10/2022 07:45

My reading is Mordaunt doesn't want to carry the knife.

They can apply pressure on her to resign - the men in grey suits - and then bring in a caretaker/unity candidate.

I guess they'll hang on to her for now and then fling her over the side if/when the next market bump happens.

Illybidol · 17/10/2022 07:47

NoDairyNoProblem · 17/10/2022 05:18

Today… midweek or indeed next week - she will continue to wreak havoc until she goes and we will continue to be the laughing stock of the world stage.
Her departure can’t come soon enough. We need a General Election.

Oh please let’s have a General Election. We need a Labour government at this point. Schools, NHS the welfare reforms of Lloyd George “cradle to the grave” are being ripped apart and thrown away by these bloody selfish conservatives who quite literally don’t give a shit about any of us. We desperately need a party that serves its people.

Peanut61 · 17/10/2022 07:50

Is there anything the public can do to force an election? Forgive my desperation and dumb questions. I have voted Tory in the past but I would never do it again. I know several people in the same position. They have had their chance and blown it. At this point it would be impossible to do worse.

Is there a petition? Is there anyway that the king would have to get involved? I guess not. Can we all write to someone?

toomuchlaundry · 17/10/2022 07:51

How would Labour pay for everything?
