Will Liz Truss resign today?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 01:00

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

I do actually feel sorry for Liz Truss on a personal level because I very much doubt she is getting the care and support someone in her condition needs. She's being subjected to the worst manifestation of Tory backstabbing seen to date.

I think she does seem mentally unwell and somebody needs to remove her as quickly and kindly as possible from public life.
That being said she stabbed Kwarteng pretty brutally since he was simply implementing all the policies she used to get herself elected by Tory party members. And many of those against her now were never her supporters. She only ever had the support of a third of Tory MPs.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 17:27

If it is a breakdown it is horrible
If only she had put the budget by the OBR or the Bank of England and actually listened before letting KK loose on it.
A bit of restraint was all that was needed

antelopevalley · 17/10/2022 17:27

@derxa have you ever, just once, agreed with any comment that criticises anyone in the conservative party?

Jourdain11 · 17/10/2022 17:27

QuebecBagnet · 17/10/2022 17:23

Normally none of the main parties field a candidate against a prime minister in a GE.

That's not true at all! Labour/Momentum actually got roundly criticised for chucking a whole load of resources at Boris Johnson's seat in the last election and they reckoned their candidate had a real chance. Of course it was totally hubristic and they probably diverted resources from other winnable seats which were either lost or not gained...

Are you sure about that? BJ's majority is only 7000.

At the minute I think Truss would be defeated by Lord Buckethead anyway.

They do. You might be thinking of the Speaker? But normally the PM is from a very safe seat so the issue doesn't arise. Johnson was a bit unusual in this respect.

The problem for the Tories at the moment is that any of their MPs under what, 20k majority are in with a shout of losing their seat at the moment!

Hunt is being covert though
Of course the NHS will be cut. It's on the cards.
It's just sad it has to happen , again :(
Savings , cut backs , it always affects the electorate.

Maybe.

As chair as the Health Committee he has argued very strongly to get Social Care working and to fund maternity services properly.

He'll be made to eat his words if he cuts NHS funding, even if its by not increasing amounts by inflation.

urbanbuddha · 17/10/2022 17:29

Hunt just said he can't guarantee the pension triple lock.

Way to go, Jezza!!! That"ll guarantee a Labour government.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 17/10/2022 17:29

Mordaunt's majority is only 15k..

But she never would be expected to speak at the Chancellor's statement. She's just there to look on side. It's not (that) weird for her to leave after, either.

Otoh, she should have taken Starmer's UQ. But the Tories have form on this. Sajid Javid was always not turning up for UQs and sending the under sub parliamentary bootpolisher to take his place; it used to drive Bercow nuts.*

*which is probably why they did it.

I get that protocol wouldn't normally require any comment from the PM after the Chancellor's statement, but we are not in normal times.

The PM dodged questions from the leader of the opposition earlier, without explanation, after sacking her previous Chancellor and ripping up the entire plan that got her elected in the first place. Speaking on her behalf, the leader of the house was forced to clarify that the Prime Minister was not in fact hiding under a desk....

Do you not feel that, in such exceptional circumstances, it might be reasonable to assume that the PM would use her time in the Chamber to make at least a short statement?

And what exactly have the Tories done in the past 12 years to stop self ID?

Google what Baverman has been saying about self ID...even Boris said Biology matters more. We need Labour to protect women's spaces - not sell us down the river.

Jourdain11 · 17/10/2022 17:31

No, I think no PM would do that. It would be so weird it would draw even more attention by it's weirdness!

But what have they done?

Booklover3 · 17/10/2022 17:32

Do you think Truss had any compassion for the millions of people she decided to screw over with her budget?

I’m guessing not. I don’t think she has a shred of moral decency, and if this is her conscience finally showing it’s self then it’s only because of the impact it’s had on her.

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 17:01

The aforementioned poll is out:

Labour leads by 36%.!!!!

Largest lead for ANY party with ANY polling company since October 1997.
Westminster VI (16 Oct.):
Labour 56% (+3)
Conservative 20% (-4)
Lib Dems 11% (-2)
Green 5% (+2)
SNP 4% (–)
Reform UK 2% (–)
Other 1% (-2)
Changes +/- 13 Oct.

Notice how the Lib Dems have dropped too. This isn’t just a Tory implosion - voters really are seeing Labour as the alternative now. (Sorry, Labour whatabouters)

greenhousegal · 17/10/2022 17:33

In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.

Hunt is king only for that reason. The reality of the man and his party is something else entirely.

woff45 · 17/10/2022 17:33

Apologies if this has been mentioned, I can't see Truss there, is that usual?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 17/10/2022 17:34

I think Labour will be benefitting from the tactical, get the Tories out vote. The Lib Dems were doing very well out of that earlier this year, but now more and more people will be thinking the best way to ensure no Tory MP is voting Labour. But I hope we can still see tactical voting even if it looks like a Labour majority is incoming, because the more Tory MPs are removed the better.

reigatecastle · 17/10/2022 17:36

Where I live the Libdems are the second party. I'd hope that Labour voters would vote Libdem and then some of the Tory voters would vote too. But I live in one of the safest Tory seats in the country, so even with an implosion I can't imagine it turning yellow or red!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/10/2022 17:38

Jourdain11 · 17/10/2022 17:31

Well, we will have to agree to disagree. I think most PMs would go for messing with parliamentary protocol over and above feeding into a complete PR disaster.

If she wasn't well enough to speak, then she would have been better advised not to shoe up to Parliament at all today. Her inane silent grinning was even more damaging than her absence.

Catlady2021 · 17/10/2022 17:38

How can they impose more austerity on public services that’s already at breaking point?
Our justice system, NHS, Police etc are all seriously short staffed. How can they cut it further?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 17:39

They can’t but they will… because they can and it doesn’t matter to them.

romatheroamer · 17/10/2022 17:41

Despite the polls, I've heard more than once people in these vox pops say "She hasn't been there very long, she deserves more of a chance"

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 17:42

Do you know what they will say ?
We have to pay for lockdown
Which Hunt would have implemented earlier
This is how cutbacks and austerity will be spun
Easy scape goat and those always opposed to it will be even more riled
