It's the only valid reason she might have for showing up at this late stage.... and the "genuine reason" cited by Penny Mordaunt may well have been that she was going to the Palace. Seems the most likely scenario.

I keep swinging between fury and pity towards her. She has absolutely created the terrible mess that she is now in through her own arrogance and failure to listen to those who know more than she does, but on a purely human level, I cannot help but feel for a person who has fucked up so publicly and monumentally.
