Will Liz Truss resign today?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 01:00

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

Except its not necessarily that straightforward.

Stability in the market will prevent interest rates going as high, and energy prices are now failing, perhaps faster than expected and fears about energy prices should drive useage down which will in turn reduce demand and therefore prices.

Yes I know, it makes no sense and is counterintuitive. It isn't good but its not necessarily as bad as you think either.

Yeah, I do understand both of those points but neither is a given. Energy prices will remain extremely volatile whilst there is a global systemic pressure (war, lack of supply) irrespective of wealthier families slightly curbing usage come April. Mortgages were heading sharply upwards in the medium term irrespective of the mini-budget. Truss’s policies did trigger an earlier than expected spike in U.K. borrowing costs, but ultimately the direction of the global economy and the actions of the Fed will matter more.

torbygirl · 17/10/2022 12:34

I don't understand the poster who insists Labour has no policies on their website - it has loads of info on there, though obviously not an official manifesto when the election could be more then 2 years away as what would be the point in that?

It's pretty funny that Truss had 2 things to throw at Starmer last week at PMQs - one was 'Putin's war' and the other was Labour's fuel bill plan only lasting to April while hers lasted 2 years. And now...What on earth will she say? She has to go by then surely.

And Labour are absolutely right not to give too much detail now as it will all get stolen. Anyone who is remotely paying attention can see that they are a far far better bet than the Tories now.

Austerity round 2.

How many cuts to their budget can schools and the health service take?

They can't take any more cuts. They need massive amounts of investment...

Maybe cancelling HS2 would make a small dent in the NHS bill?

I'm not interested in being 'clear' Corbettoninja, I was interested in replying to someone else and clarifying what they said. I'm a voter, an ex-Labour member, neither a politician nor a shill. It's Labour's job to be clear to me. If you have a problem with what I've said in my posts about Labour policy then take it up with the muddled Labour supporters and members who are telling me different things which I'm obviously querying. Or don't and become another reason I won't ever vote Labour again.

Pmsl, I’m not responsible for who you vote fgs. I don’t give a shit who your pencil hovers over.

If you want a 1:1 conversation then a forum isn’t the place to do it. Any part of anyones post can be picked up by anybody. Just ignore it if it’s raising your blood pressure.

I asked for clarity around what you’re trying to say seeing as what I said pissed you off so much. Now I don’t care and I’m happy with my first understanding of your huffy posts.

Be fair. She still has the removal of caps on banker's bonuses to set her apart Grin

Somehow THAT made it through the last round of u-turns. Funny that.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 12:44

Save the markets and the hedge funders
Everyone else and her fiscal event went under the big red bus!

vera99 · 17/10/2022 12:49

I'll never forget that video of Johnson near to the last cabinet meeting and the looks on their faces as they knew the game was up. I hear that Truss is depressed - well the solution is clear, apologise and resign and help to force a General Election there may be some residual sympathy from bigger hearts than mine. Post-Parliament who would ever want her she's a reputational liability with none of the wit and humour of Boris.

Sir Graham should bring the glass of whisky and the metaphorical revolver to No 10 and soon.

I thought Hunt was keeping the cap on bankers bonuses.
Just read that.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

of course no one gets paid to
promote Labour on SM/websites.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hmm Statistically it is far more likely someone is a Labour member than being paid. Obviously.

I think he’ll do it as soon as a succession plan has been agreed with a majority of MPs. I give her to the end of the week.

theinkblacktart · 17/10/2022 12:58

Hoping that when expected to resign, she says fuck you to the lot of them and calls an election.

FlorettaB · 17/10/2022 12:58

Can we have a general election now. We really need one. Whoever takes over has no mandate.

Martin Lewis just on BBC. He broadly supports the change saying it was necessary. He doesn't have a problem with the end of the cap in April but cavets this. His initial reaction to the energy cap was it was expensive, too blunt and poorly targeted. He'd like to see this addressed. Hunt's comments do seem to suggest there will be something in the pipeline along those lines.

He also said that he hopes this will prevent interest rates will go up so quickly and steeply. But other protective measures needed for those struggling needed.

But on the whole he thinks this was a necessary step.

That should offer SOME reassurance. But there are some unanswered questions still couched in there which we need to be mindful on.

Isn’t cancelling HS2 a bit pointless, as iso much work has been done on it already? And if it’s cancelled, loads of people will lose their jobs? I think it would be a political and economic mess if it was cancelled.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 13:03

I hope that the government level with us all about austerity 2 (the return )
They have moved fast enough to appease the markets , now tell us the truth over who will have to pay it back and how it'll be done

They will stop early/not do a later phase presumably. It is hugely expensive and the price keeps rising due to inflation.

I am not a green voter but I always agreed the money wasted on HS2 should have gone into local services Angry - which would have helpedboost reginal fucking growth Angry Angry

Interesting - where?

The Telegraph reported about an hour ago that the cap was still going to be removed.

Which one?

torbygirl · 17/10/2022 13:23

I've seen on Twitter (I know...) some cabinet ministers are set to resign in the coming days. Surely if that happens there has to be an election? We can't just lurch around like this indefinitely.

"The Leader of His Majesties Opposition Ian Blackford"

Will Liz Truss resign today?
sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 13:25

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 13:20

Which one?

Guildford MP Angela Richardson according to Sky News.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 13:30

Ian Blackford would wipe the floor with Keir Starmer though , he just doesn't care what he says !

torbygirl · 17/10/2022 13:31

Ian Blackford doesn't have to worry about appealing to all the swing voters in England's marginal seats though.

StJeanDeVence · 17/10/2022 13:46

So Truss will not even be appearing in the House this afternoon to answer Labour's urgent question.

FFS. She had better be out by teatime.
