Not to make BF this food anymore - Bacon

My best friend loves to eat bacon sandwiches as do i and my family. The issue is that she always calls them ‘bacon butties’ and says this with great relish. “Ooh bacon butty!” She calls other sandwiches “sandwiches”.
I was brought up being told that people who said Butty rather than sandwich were incredibly common. Whenever she says this , it really irritates me. I haven’t said anything.
Am in being unreasonable just to not serve this when she comes over to minimise the irritation . Or do I tell her how much this bothers me and serve her something she loves.
Do others hate this too?

DOI grumpy old woman with Perimenopausal grump.
As a side Issue , it’s tomato ketchup not tomato sauce!

I am kind of intrigued that this bothers you to the extent you would stop making your friend a food she likes.

Of course, the problem is with you and not your friend. You need to ask yourself why it bothers you so much and try to adjust your judgements as this really is a silly thing to get so worked up about.

Everyone says bacon butty and even if they didn't, she's your friend so presumably you like her as a person - why can't you accept the way she speaks?

MenaiMna · 16/10/2022 11:14

I firmly believe (and am probably wrong) that "butty" is short for buttered roll whatever the filling. So it's a bacon sandwich if between two slices of bread or a bacon butty if in a roll - buttered or not. I'm quite pedantic with my language and think a lot about why we say things without any academic rigour behind it.
And, in my opinion it should be smoked thick cut back baked in the oven for 15 minutes at 200C convection, no butter, no sauce. The vehicle should be a white roll or granary bread (white bread and sauce are horrible). But ultimately a BLT is best.

redskyhaze · 16/10/2022 11:15

Also why does it irritate you that someone might be 'common'. What does 'common' even mean? You are coming across as quite snobbish.

TheDogsMother · 16/10/2022 11:15

Butty is common ? Who knew ?

For the record though smoked back bacon grilled, brown seeded toast, butter, brown sauce. <gavel>

But since you ask, I can't imagine a single English individual of any social class referring to either a bacon sandwich or a chip sandwich without a self-conscious tension in their shoulders. For these specific fillings, "butty" transcends class. It's a triumph of linguistic egalitarianism.

yes to this

Hmmm. I'm from the northwest. I grew up with butties. I've lived in London for a LONG time now. I say "bacon sandwich" without a second thought, but would still say "chip butty".
I never say "sarnie".
And it's ketchup or brown sauce.

Afterfire · 16/10/2022 09:22

Oh rich / upper class (and yep I know that’s not necessarily the same thing) do call people common, they just make sure no one hears them doing it!

100%. The "society" people I know are by far the snobbiest and most classist. They just don't publicise it.

MummyMcS · 16/10/2022 11:19

Your parents did you a great disservice teaching you to look down on others for the way they talk. I hope you haven't passed on such snobbery to your own children. Is "common" really such a bad thing compared to being psychopathically judgemental?

Weirdwonders · 16/10/2022 11:22

You should definitely tell your friend how you feel about this. I’m sure she’ll be concerned to hear that you think she’s common and change her ways straight away for you. Alternatively she might just stop you like a hot stone. Either way, do let her know who you are.

Sadly I failed to imagine you Grin

TheMoops · 16/10/2022 11:27

I ressured to hear there are at least a couple of my tribe on here who understand the rip your own head off level of irritation with the word “butty”.
@RedDwarfGarbagePod yup I feel the same way about brew too .

I take it you don't spend much time up north?
It's butty and brew in pretty much every household I know.

Are you one of those that confuses regional dialect with being common??

Bbq1 · 16/10/2022 11:34

Bacon butty here. Piece is interesting. Where in the country is thst used?

BarrelOfOtters2 · 16/10/2022 11:36

Bacon butty. Ham sandwich. Chip butty.

Midlands and went a v posh school.

BadGranny · 16/10/2022 11:37

olympicsrock · 16/10/2022 03:36

Thick unsmoked back bacon rashers to the point where the fat is crispy but the bacon is still softish.
lightly buttered bread or even better a fluffy white bread roll
Light drizzle of tomato ketchup

No, no, no! Smoked streaky, cooked till crisp, in wholemeal bread thickly spread with marmalade.

Oysterbabe · 16/10/2022 11:39

Piece is Scotland.

Rooster67 · 16/10/2022 11:40

Someone made me a bacon sandwich with toast the other day and I'm still traumatised.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 16/10/2022 11:41

Butty is a sandwich with hot contents - bacon butty, chip butty etc. I wouldn’t say I’m from a common family - Uni education from Oxford for great grandfather and London for grandfather etc but we say butty. Do people really think about class this much? Why is being “common” seen as a negative? I’ve met lots of posh tossers 🤷🏻‍♀️

1994girl · 16/10/2022 11:41

It's a bacon butty. Quit the bitching!

Doggiedoodoos · 16/10/2022 11:42

I would murder a bacon sambo with brown sauce right now. Hold the fat please.

youagainomg · 16/10/2022 11:43

Only thing irritating is you being a judgemental cow. Your friend needs better friends.

Floydthebarber · 16/10/2022 11:46

My grandmother said piece, as in 'piece of ham, piece od cheese'. West Midlands.

My dad eats uses toast. That's wrong, the PP who said wholemeal bread is wrong but then I read this:
For the record though smoked back bacon grilled, brown seeded toast, butter, brown sauce.
Brown seeded toast!? So, so wrong!

You have missed the fried egg but otherwise perfect.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 16/10/2022 11:49

Brown seeded toast!? So, so wrong!

Might as well use a roofing tile and have done with it.

MysteryBelle · 16/10/2022 11:59

BLT is the bacon sandwich here in USA. Bacon, lettuce, and tomato. With (or without) mayo on toasted bread. So good. I lean toward vegetarianism but BLTs are awfully good.

zingally · 16/10/2022 12:16

Oh, to go through life with these sorts of problems!

Fairislefandango · 16/10/2022 09:15

It is very poor form to describe anyone’s behaviour as “unspeakably common”. It is deeply LMC to describe people in this way.

^This. Although tbh it's a tad hypocritical to criticise someone for describing behaviour as 'common' by pointing out that their behaviour in doing so is poor form and deeply LMC!

@Fairislefandango - It is indeed very hypocritical… it was definitely tongue in cheek, if that helps 😁
