When he left, he seemed to imply he may...?

Morceaux I agree with what you have said about Starmer. The reason the Labour Party are doing so well is becuase the Tories are doing so badly not because of his leadership as under Blair/Brown and New Labour

There are a few Tory backbenchers that are not putting themselves forward but then shall be after the next election

I am really not sure who is best to become PM for Labour but glad that some on the back benches are not putting themselves forward

He apparently now earns more for a half hour speech than for being PM a whole year's salary. Plus in a recent pole in US he was more popular than Biden. They love him in the Ukraine too. I would love him to come back as PM as he won legitimate mandate of 79 seats majority. I don't agree that a gaggle of Westminster MP's should be able to topple him when he was still popular with Tory members. More popular than Truss and Sunak combined.

You thought it was OK for him to be continually lying to Parliament and the country? And that being "still popular with Tory members" outweighs appointing a known sex molester to a position of power over junior MPs and members of staff, reacting ridiculously slowly when he duly molests someone else in public, and sending ministers out to tell a succession of different lies about it? Would you really love more of that sort of behaviour? Why?

No way. Big no to Boris. He’s under investigation

Exactly. Why is he even being allowed to stand?

Morceaux · 20/10/2022 21:25

I’d be worried about Sunak, were I a Labour voter. I don’t think he’s particularly tarred by being in government with Boris.

Starmer, who can best be described as vanilla-but-competent, needs to be up against someone of questionable competence (Johnson, Truss) in order for people to vote for him out of necessity.

Sunak similarly comes across as sensible and diligent, which rather negates Keir’s main selling point.

Well, we'll have to see and it's definitely not in the bag whatsoever but I really don't see Sunak as this massive threat. Sensible and diligent? He lost millions (or was it billions?) to fraud and what else? His response to energy bills and and cost of living crisis was tardy and somewhat stingy too. Yes, that's probably largely forgotten now but what will he do if he gets in? Rise taxes and/or pursue an austerity agenda? It will be shit for whoever gets in now, including LAbour if (please god) a GE was to be called and they won it, but at least they would have 5 years to turn things around a little. Whoever gets the Tory gig will have 2 and a bit years max and there's an economic shit storm and the party is in absolute turmoil. The idea that anyone is going to be able to turn all that around, especially someone as inexperienced as Sunak is quite farfetched imo.

I think people massively underrate Starmer - I think he's been very political and in a quiet way has achieved a lot in the party almost without it being noticed. And of course the other party has to become less popular for the opposition to grow in popularity.

ilukp · 20/10/2022 21:46

He'll be back.
Wouldn't be surprised if the whole Liz Truss thing was just a set up - get someone in far worse than Boris, opinion polls showing election disaster. Tory MPs and party members think well Boris wasn't as bad as that after all and we can forgive him for Partygate and everything else he did. They might think better to have Boris than yet another new person who might cause chaos and Boris is still popular with a lot of voters.

TerfQueen · 20/10/2022 21:48

#bringbackboris and #bbb all over Twitter so who knows 🤣 what a strange time to be alive

Morceaux · 20/10/2022 21:48

Yougov makes for some interesting reading.

Boris’ disapproval rating stands at 59%

Rishi’s is almost as high (51%).

My suspicion though would be that those who dislike Rishi are more likely to be conservative voters who would hold their nose and vote for him at a GE.

I suspect that Boris remains very popular among Tory voters, but would have a massive task on his hands to change the perceptions among the wider public.

Frankly I do think it’ll be the return of Boris. Some MPs will leave that party in protest, the Partygate investigation will hit the headlines and we’ll continue on with the instability that has dogged the country for the last couple of years.

On the plus side, I do think a Boris win exponentially increases the chance of a snap election.

Clavinova · 20/10/2022 18:03

Who could get 100 nominations? Sunak, Mordaunt, Johnson

I would be happy with any of those candidates - all three seem very electable to me.

I have to repeat my questions above. Would you really be happy with serial liar, sex molester excuser Johnson who had an unprecedented number of his colleagues resign rather than continue to work with him? Why?

Isleoftights · 20/10/2022 21:52

Massine movement in the markets this evening. Mordaunt fading.. Boris clear second favorite, and closing. Come on Boris !

Novum · 20/10/2022 21:57

OMG12 · 20/10/2022 20:24

It was quite amazing how the mood changed as soon as Boris appeared back in the frame. The labour MPs became very aggressive rather than the roll their eyes at the silly Tories stance they had had. It seems they actually fear Boris’s return more than any other. He would have two years to over come partygate and then I think the labour lead would be slashed considerably

But he wouldn't overcome it, because it's an absolute certainty that there would be more messes and scandals, because he's too idle and greedy to avoid it. . And we still have Privileges Committee's investigation to deal with.

HRTQueen · 20/10/2022 21:58

An investigation isn’t going to stop Johnson

im afraid I have little faith in these investigations and I believe many voters feel the same there is so little trust in anything that involves politicians

Florenz · 20/10/2022 21:59

Boris is popular in the Red Wall seats that Labour need to win back to get in power. I don't think any other Tory leader could do as well there.

Novum · 20/10/2022 21:59

sashagabadon · 20/10/2022 20:56

If Boris gets enough support he will be back. I wouldn’t mind, I thought party gate was utter nonsense

Did you think the Pincher issue was utter nonsense? Why?

ManAboutTown · 20/10/2022 22:00

He's going to come back and wind up the lefties no end.

Seriously he is probably the only chance the Tories have. People like Hunt will lose the northern wall in an instant. Mordaunt doesn't know what a woman is.

Buk · 20/10/2022 22:00

God help us if that scruffy bellend gets the gig.

Novum · 20/10/2022 22:06

How does "knowing what a woman is" automatically make someone fit to be PM? Particularly when that knowledge has led them to do precisely fuck all about self ID whilst in power?

ManAboutTown · 20/10/2022 22:07

@Novum - knowing doesn't make you fit to be PM. Not knowing makes you unfit which is the point I was making

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 20/10/2022 22:13

@Morceaux

That means zilch though.

People are far more likely to want to vent and say what they don't want than what they do

Re Boris and the dreadul man ...one wonders did he know the full facts?

It always seems to me that his mind is elsewhere and not on the minuteia and that is why people forgive him.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 20/10/2022 22:15

Does anyone know if downing Street is sound proof?

Was it last night someone was blaring out beny Hill music so loudly the TV people couldn't talk? It made me wonder with all the protest there, is it sound proof.
.it also looks very vulnerable should a mob decide to descend one day.

Skyellaskerry · 20/10/2022 22:21

@duvetdrama because if he gets 100 MPs backing him and it goes to a vote by the members, the members are known to idolise him.

Morceaux · 20/10/2022 22:27

There’s no question that, if he runs and makes it past the 100 MP threshold, he wins.

But I do think there remains a sizeable question mark as to whether he can make the 100 threshold. He obviously does have loyal supporters in the party but I think most will view him as the disunity candidate, who will exacerbate the infighting we’ve seen all year.

SleeplessInEngland · 20/10/2022 22:29

Johnson apologists live in a parallel universe where he’s secretly popular outside of the small party membership. In this universe there’s no data whatsoever to suggest that.

theworldhas · 20/10/2022 22:29

Why would he want to come back to this shit show

he started the shit show with Brexit. The Conservative Party warping into some kind of insane nastier version of UKIP stems precisely from that. He got rid of anyone who wasn’t a true believer. Sadly the markets don’t care how hard you believe (nor does customs at Amsterdam Schipol, where I spent an hour and a half queuing with fellow Brits last week, while other Europeans waltzed straight though in about ten).

ManAboutTown · 20/10/2022 22:34

@theworldhas - I forgot the bit where he annoys the shit out of lamebrains who can't see the EU for what it is.

Remember Gorbachev - who should know something about totalitarianism -described the EU as an attempt to reconstruct the Soviet Union

So true,
