Is there no way to make this country love the Tories again?

In 2019 it looked like it was going to be the Tory decade (2020s) and Boris would have at least 10 years to run the country, Tory mania was at its peak. It's astonishing how much 3 years have changed the whole countries unquestioning love of the Conservative Party.

Is it over? Can they win back the hearts of the public? If so, how? Surely Truss would have to go.

AIBU - yes the country we'll doff our caps and tug our forelocks again once we're in the voting booth

AINBO - they're fucked

I would put money on the next GE being a Tory victory. Even if held next week.

Yeah, probably. It's depressing. As for brexit, the event itself may be some time ago but it's the context for everything that is happening now ie the complete inability of any prime minister to get a hold of the country and have it function properly. And even though lazyboy Boris "Michelle" De Pfeiffel is the one who pushed for it to happen, and when it went wrong responded by falling out with his ex-BMF over in Moscow, people will still vote the cunt back in.

I'm not sure I disagree. But Brexit is quickly receding into the past, aided and abetted by the pandemic (not least partygate), the most frightening European war in nigh-on 80 years and an escalating cost of living crisis. As the old saying goes, a week is a long time in politics.

I suspect Labour are unelectable for many reasons aside from this. They've alienated a great many women voters, as the 'Respect my XX if you want my X' campaign has demonstrated. Some women are seriously fearful of what a slide into Self ID - almost a given if Labour get in - would mean for their rights.

It's turned some women into single-issue voters. For me, other issues are important - ie. the Tories have rendered the humanities practically worthless and I probably need a Labour government in power if I want to stay in my job for any duration.

None of the options are appealing - any more so than the political system we have in place is adequate to deliver them. I'm increasingly of the view - more so after Elizabeth II's death - that the entire constitution needs a massive shake-up from top to bottom.

Brexit is not receding into the past. Brexit is not yet done. And I can't believe anyone is still repeating the lie about the Yories and women's rights when there's a high chance that Penny TWAW Mordaunt may become our next Prime Minister.😱

OneFrenchEgg · 16/10/2022 15:27

I've just put a bet in for a conservative minority - will win more than if I'd gone conservative majority which is interesting.

They've shown us who they are.

We always knew they were just out for the rich mates/donors.

I never loved the tories. Were always bound to ruin the country and fuck the poor whilst helping their rich mates.

I don't think the effects of Brexit are clear at all to most people. We can see the impact of Covid for example - but how do you inform people of the impact ? What needs to happen to educate people? Because for example, sniping on forums or the likes of radios James O'Brien lobbying insults like Gammon around doesn't do it.
So that won't affect how people vote.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/10/2022 15:41

If you read my post, I was talking specifically of Labour in relation to the woman's rights issue. If they get in, self-ID is likely a done deal. This, far from being a 'lie', is unlikely to come as a shock to anyone.

I'm not under any illusions about Mordaunt. Bad as Liz Truss is, she would have been infinitely worse. It's equally clear Truss isn't going to last five minutes and the pool of candidates for leader is small. Small comfort that Mordaunt fell out of the last leadership race when her backtracking was not accepted and through certain media outlets she was actually made to own her views. Whether she's learned from this experience remains to be seen, but she's likely to receive at least some opposition from within her party (Johnson, for one, recognised a vote winner when he saw it).

My post was far from intended to be a defence of the Tories. But Labour have their setbacks as well.

I don't think we've even begun to see the real effects of either.

My post referred to the aftermath of the Brexit vote, the bitter contestation over upholding the result, and the cock-up that ensued in negations over the mechanics of leaving. That's what has now been eclipsed by certain seismic, global events that followed. My post did t make that entirely clear.

It depends on the grey vote. If pensions are being hit hard or under threat then they're done for.

Given the state of the polls, I bet the odds were spectacular. Hope you didn’t bet much.

OneFrenchEgg · 16/10/2022 15:52

I don't agree re the grey vote. The pensioners and older people I know all bang on about the 70s, Michael Foot, and would vote for a proverbial pig in a blue rosette. They moan but ' I just don't trust Labour 'keir starmer has no policies ' 'I don't like that Angela Rayner' 'something something racist something Diane Abbott'

I don't think the polls reflect much more than dissatisfaction. Pencil to paper, that's different.

Abei · 16/10/2022 15:58

I wouldn't vote for Labour or Tory if there was a GE. I need a new, better and more competent party to vote for.

Well just because you know a load of old cunts doesn't mean we're all like that. I am 60 and have never voted Tory, nor would I.
I hate this hatred of me for being old - it's not my fucking fault, it just happened.
One key thing about us "grey voters" is that we can be arsed to actually go to the polling station.
We need PR and a massive constitutional overhaul - we also need to make voting in elections as easy as voting in Strictly or Eurovision.

Blossomtoes · 16/10/2022 16:03

Same @WatchoRulo and I’m a few years older than you.

This is why it's pointless trying to discuss stuff. I have no interest in continuing if you want to just use that kind of ridiculous, offensive hyperbole.
Good luck with your vote when you get it, hope it counts wherever you are.

So you think your ageist hyperbole isn’t offensive?

OneFrenchEgg · 16/10/2022 16:28

I'm referring to people I actually know. In response to a suggestion the 'grey vote' will be anti Tory. I don't think all my older friends and relatives are 'cunts' - that's so basic.

WatchoRulo · 16/10/2022 17:02

Fair enough I suppose but I do think people who say "something something racist something Diane Abbott" are cunts on the whole.

@Abei but you do realise you will never get this, whatever your political allegiance, with the first past the post voting system
