Won’t let DH keep shoes on entry shoe rack

Yes, there is a shoe rack in my house’s entryway, but I would prefer to only keep one pair of shoes per person there. I begrudgingly let DH keep two of his pairs there. He says it’s inefficient to not fill the rack completely and wants to keep more there. But the entryway is not a closet! AIBU?

Eh?? That's what it's there for.
Where else do you store shoes?
I have a shoe cabinet - prefer that as I don't have to look at the shoes which do look messy on a shoe rack. All shoes in the house are in the shoe cabinet.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/10/2022 20:39

Pick your battles, dearie, or you may find his shoes stored on someone else's shoe rack.

My DH has his very own dedicated shoe rack in our front entry for all his 'necessary' shoes that 'must' be kept by the door. I couldn't care less.

LovePoppy · 14/10/2022 20:40

People put shoes in closets?!

Wow, I was not expecting this response! Maybe IABU. But let me clarify: I’m fine with extra shoes being on the rack that are in use for that day. For example, you’ve just got home from work and temporarily leave your office shoes at the door. But I think shoes should not be STORED on the entryway rack. Only one utilitarian pair per person should be stored there for taking the bins out, etc. Otherwise it completely fills up and there’s not room for the unexpected extra pair of shoes or shoes from guests.

I cant imagine what your system is ment to be. Are you only allowed to wear one pair of shoes in a day? Or as you mention office shoes, are you ment to put away your office shoes away before you move onto a pair of after work shoes and reapeat in reverse in the morning before work?

It's a stunt shoe rack.

😂

Honestly, if we didn’t have a porch we’d be ok with this. Shoes we’re wearing that day stay in the porch, I don’t force DH it’s just something we’ve always done so DD does the same. If we wear a different pair the next day the others will go on a shoe rack in the under stairs cupboard until I’ve cleaned/polished them and put them away in the wardrobe.
I know not everyone does this, most people I know don’t even take their shoes off in the house. Went to a friends the other day and she was curled up on her sofa with her shoes on 😖

YANBU!! We have a small shoe rack by the door and a huge one in the shoe/coat cupboard. The one by the door is for 'immediate' shoes ie the ones you are wearing that day or plan to wear the next.
DH leaves multiple pairs of his stupid massive shoes on there despite requests not to. I just shove them on to the big rack whilst muttering to myself. Unless he leaves them behind the door so that it won't open properly, then I hide them!

Thank you!!! That’s what I mean by “the entryway rack is not a closet.” It looks cluttered to store multiple pairs of shoes there and leaves no room for any extra or guest shoes. DH has his own closet with a rack that has space for all his pairs (albeit on the second floor of the house).

Yeah, you're absolutely being unreasonable! Both about dictating your husband how many pairs of shoes can go on the shoe rack, and about dedicating a whole thread to it. 😂

I took the time to read your follow-up response - your elaborate rules for which shoes are allowed and which are not did not help your case. 😂

ImAvingOops · 14/10/2022 20:47

When you think about it, it makes much more sense to keep all shoes by the door so you don't track dirt into your house. I think you need to invest in a bigger shoe storage rack but one that you can close snd not see the shoes.

While you do sound batshit, I do kind of get it - shoes everywhere do look scruffy.

SoftSheen · 14/10/2022 20:47

OP you need a shoe cupboard. Problem solved.

Butchyrestingface · 14/10/2022 20:47

1/10.

They don't put ANY effort in anymore. Sad

WrongWayApricot · 14/10/2022 20:47

I get it, I dream of being that neat. But I can't believe you actually said it out loud. To another person. With a straight face.

Pinpot · 14/10/2022 20:47

I am absolutely with you OP. I let one pair of shoes per person stay in the hall - otherwise they go into the shoe cupboard. I don't want jumbly clutter in the hall.

RiftGibbon · 14/10/2022 20:48

What's the point of a shoe rack if you don't put shoes on it? You're being ridiculous.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/10/2022 20:53

I… don’t have the words. Why buy a shoe rack if you don’t want to keep shoes in it? And as for ‘letting him’…

Control issues much?

Happyher · 14/10/2022 20:55

I’m with you wanting your hallway to look tidy. I have a hall cupboard for coats and shoes but items not in regular use are kept upstairs in wardrobes. Have you thought some type of storage to hide them

StoodOnAPlug · 14/10/2022 20:56

Hello Daily Mail 👋

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 14/10/2022 20:56

I'd shove the bloody shoe rack up your arse.

I just couldn't live with someone like you.

Get a life.

MarieCondom · 14/10/2022 20:57

@Sundaya Just "allow" everyone to keep their shoes on in the house, and all your problems will be solved as if by magic I bet you're anal about that, too

Up74 · 14/10/2022 21:06

Shame on your DH for wanting to put more shoes in the shoe rack. You are right the hallway shoe rack is not a closet.

5128gap · 14/10/2022 21:07

OP, with kindness, you clearly do not have what it takes to keep a shoe rack in your entry way.
Those who walk the tight rope between functional shoe rack ownership and marital disharmony typically have a devil may care attitude you lack.
If yyou're feeling anxious at two pairs of shoes rather than the permitted one, you will struggle greatly when a third pair appears.
Then the muddy trainers, thrown with cheery abandon, so the right is on a different level of the rack to the left. That elderly single slipper no one knows the owner of. Your mothers best boots, left there since last Christmas when she went home in her slippers. An umbrella shoved between the slats....
Remove the rack OP while you still have time.

JustJustWhy · 14/10/2022 21:08

What a perfect title for a great, existential novel. "The Unexpected Shoe".

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/10/2022 21:09

I would love my teen to put shoes on a shoe rack and hoodie on coat hook rather than dumped on the floor.. it couldbe worse Op

WonderingWanda · 14/10/2022 21:09

If it's because you don't want loads of shoes on display then get rid of the shoe rack and buy a cupboard.

DaphneDeloresMorehead · 14/10/2022 21:09

Gracious, I appear to have been using my shoe rack wrong all these years. Mine is filled with filthy riding boots, random riding attire/whips/hats that have been discarded, at the moment it has a mug and a plate DH dumped out of his car.

id rather live in my mess than a house where the shoe rack is a decorative item. Do you just display your Manolos on it for the admiration of visitors ? I couldn't be bothered 😂
