Newspaper reports as scathing as ever, and The Times suggesting Tories are lining up Sunak and Mordaunt as a duo.

can’t stand the woman but surely she’ll hold on for a bit longer - everyone was saying Boris would go much earlier than he did. And why on earth did they vote her into power in the first place 🙄

@Badbadbunny - They definitely weren’t as busy in the area that I live in actually.

I didn’t mind Eat Out scheme. I’ve heard a few say it helped their business when things were tough

I agree with Sunak’s later view that mistakes were made re systems in place, and what should have been kept open but was closed. It was good to hear someone say it.

He admitted it at least but was also part of it although not leading on non-Chancellor stuff

Why are people predicting Boris Johnson will make a comeback instead of the other contender taking over? Sunak predicted all this and he seems to have more prudence and common sense than Boris Johnson so why is he not the obvious choice?

Yes, it's all rather fanciful. I doubt even Johnson would want to come back to lead the party to a still very likely election defeat.

Everything is linked back to Brexit, every PM has to prove their anti EU credentials as do ALL cabinet ministers.

The pool of smart brexitier MPs is very small, maybe even non existent.

Bingo. Everything going on to now tracks back to June 2016.

People can clamour for an election all they want, but it's a democracy where the public vote for a n MP of a party, not a leader. In an election, the public vote for their local MP, not for a leader. This is something a lot of people either don't understand, or think they can change, when they are unhappy.

We aren't in a country where we have a dictator. The rule is 5 years in office then an election with the government holding the key to an earlier election if they want that.

Well we know that. It doesn't stop people wondering about the machinations of the leader though does it? And as you well know, the FPTP system is very flawed. A party candidate can win a seat with a lower overall percentage vote than all the other candidates combined. Not good and leads to Ying and Yang and a loss of voter interest when the outcome is inevitable.

Anyway, it is one thing to elect a leader of the Tories by the current method when they are merely voting for a Leader. It is quite another thing to select a leader by the votes of a tiny minority of the population where that leader will be the Prime Minister. Doesn't sound very democratic to me anyway. But what do I know?

Tigerblue4 · 14/10/2022 11:08

Press conference this afternoon - I doubt she'll go though.

hesbeingabitofadick · 14/10/2022 11:08

Sky News reporting that Liz Truss will hold a news conference this afternoon

Dear, Oh Dear.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 14/10/2022 11:08

Before they’re voted out in a GE, the Tories urgently need a new means of selecting a leader - at least voted for by their MPs, not a small number of mostly old die-hards out in the shires.

TBF they do actually have that option now. There's nothing to stop the parliamentary party picking the candidate amongst themselves and presenting the membership with a fait accompli. They did it in 2017 and 2003: if there's only one MP who wants it then there's no role for the wider membership in that process. The mechanism is actually quite well designed and smart in that respect. But they didn't have the brains to do the same this time round, so here they are.

SleeplessInEngland · 14/10/2022 11:09

The press conference is just to announce the u-turn. "We believe the budget was correct but certain elements have become a distraction blah blah blah..."

MarshaBradyo · 14/10/2022 11:09

Press conference 😫 - I don’t miss those

RudsyFarmer · 14/10/2022 11:09

JulietDorney · 14/10/2022 11:00

'They'?

Who are 'they'?

I'm not.

I just want someone competent.

To make this about gender and race is really stooping very low indeed.

We have had two former women PMs and the cabinet has a wide range of ethnicity now.

And how long did Theresa May last? She was one of the shortest serving British PMs in modern history. Everyone talks about Thatcher but she was an anomaly.

Glass cliff basically.

He excluded 3 million self employed, freelancers and casual workers from furlough/SEISS support schemes and then lied about it in Parliament. His "criteria" for support (or not) were fundamentally flawed, illogical and unfair. Large numbers of self employed lost their businesses due to inadequate support, many casuals/freelancers lost their savings, some lost their homes and some lost their lives.

At the start his mantra was "we'll leave no-one behind" but after a few months it changed to "we can't help everyone".

He also extended IR35 in the midst of covid, causing damage to the IT industry, haulage industry and NHS in terms of workforce shortages.

How about his unnecessary "eat out to spread covid" initiative?

Or the billions given away in Covid loans to criminals pretending to have businesses as there was no property scrutiny as to applicants? There were reports of people being stopped leaving airports with suitcases full of cash which came from bounce back covid loans!

Many of the genuine self employed who were excluded would have been Tory party members and would have voted for Truss just to ensure Sunak didn't win the leadership contest!

Woah! Not quite as innocuous as I thought then.

I really should pay more attention.

Btw, it's £2.99 per month to sign up as a Tory Party member. I'm not sure whether there's a minimum membership duration in order to be allowed to vote for a leader though. Might be worth a punt if a General Election is out of the question. Don't say I sent you lol.

WalkingThroughTreacle · 14/10/2022 11:14

I'm going to nip down the bookies and put a fiver on Rees-Mogg being PM by New Year. May seem far-fetched but given the nonsensical farce that's been playing out in Westminster for the past decade or so I reckon it's far from a crazy bet.

miceonabranch · 14/10/2022 11:15

She's a wet, soggy, mouldy lettuce. Get rid.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 14/10/2022 11:15

I think being PM is far too much like hard work for Rees Mogg.

Cuck00soup · 14/10/2022 11:15

You could add a fiver for Maggie Thatcher too. It won't be too long now before they did her up again to return to the glory days...

thetemptationofchocolate · 14/10/2022 11:17

The person who writes 'A week in Tory' called her Margarine Thatcher recently. I think it kind of suits her. A cheap unsatisfying substitute.

I can thing of better words than 'anomaly' for old Maggie!

Breaking news

PM to hold press conference today

Kennykenkencat · 14/10/2022 11:19

We made use of the Eat Out to Help scheme.
I know it did help a lot of the smaller businesses to start to get back up and running.

However out of a family of 4 working adults only one had any help. The rest weren’t eligible.

aboutanidiot · 14/10/2022 11:20

Explains why Karteng high-tailed it back here from hob-knobbing with the IMF in Washington or wherever he was. I suspect Spin Lizzie will throw him under a bus.

Lizneedsamotto · 14/10/2022 11:24

I wanted Liz to go but now they are talking about Penny Mordaunt replacing her, who appears to be utterly incompetent, I am not sure it will make a difference.

TheGuv1982 · 14/10/2022 11:29

He days are clearly numbered, but it has to be a general election to decide the next PM at this point.

Metabigot · 14/10/2022 11:29

Lonelycrab · 14/10/2022 07:38

She’ll be too stubborn to go

If she loses the support of her party, she’ll have no choice. That’s already in the process of happening now. So yes, shelf life of a lettuce is about right.

love that... an actual lettuce would outlive Liz Truss
