Newspaper reports as scathing as ever, and The Times suggesting Tories are lining up Sunak and Mordaunt as a duo.

can’t stand the woman but surely she’ll hold on for a bit longer - everyone was saying Boris would go much earlier than he did. And why on earth did they vote her into power in the first place 🙄

The trouble is the Tories don't have anyone even remotely decent to replace her. Sunak was an ok chancellor, but he'd make a shit pm.

No matter whether a PM has served a long time or for a short while, they all earn the same pension. At the moment this stands at 50% of the PM’s salary of £194,250. That means that every former Prime Minister can expect at least £97,125 per year. Given the fact that PMs rarely stop at retirement age, that guaranteed annual income can really mount up for us poor tax payers. Imagine the sort of bill attached to a former PM who is kicked out of office in his mid-forties and lives for another 45 years. In that very likely scenario the tax payer would be paying £4.3 million out to one individual. Thankfully the government sees some of that money back as it is subject to income tax. The government have promised to reform this system but there’s no evidence that they’re actually do anything right now.

I wonder if she would a) be eligible for it, b) accept it.😡

It'd be Lettice Truss. More Tory.

Lettruss?

lovescats3 · 14/10/2022 10:04

hopefully she and kwarteng will be gone sooner than that as they are tanking the economy

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 14/10/2022 07:50

Never mind Liz; can the British economy last 17 more days!? 😱

My thoughts entirely… if they go will things settle down, or is some of it ‘baked in’ now

Inflation I understand is underlying factors, I’m thinking more about interest rates …?

Ways to get rid of Truss article

"Under Tory rules, if 15 per cent of the parliamentary party – currently 54 MPs – send a letter, then a no confidence vote of all MPs is triggered."

"But there is another relevant rule. Under existing procedures, no Tory leader who has survived a leadership challenge can be challenged for another year."

It has been claimed by some Tories that this rule applies to new leaders who have only just been elected – a fact reported confirmed by Sir Graham.

To amend the rules would require MPs on the 1922 committee's executive to agree that the situation merited such a course of action. It is not clear what the executive, which was only recently elected, thinks of the idea now. But were there enough anger among MPs at the prime minister’s performance, it would be possible.

Barring a rule change, Truss could be ejected the way Johnson was ejected. Johnson was hit by cabinet resignation after cabinet resignation and left isolated.

Dinner held to discuss ousting Truss

According to BBC’s Newsnight, “multiple Conservative MPs” held a dinner within the last few days where “the main topic of discussion was ‘how do we get rid of Liz Truss?’”

And here we are, so judgemental of parts of the world who don't do democracy "properly".

And that was all Boris' work. He started fitting rid of anyone halfway competent, who could challenge him, even before he was PM.

Wonder no more of course she would and had been reported to be worth £12 million to boot.

Liz "Dear, Oh Dear" Truss...that'll look well on the election posters!
🤦‍♀️

CredibilityProblem · 14/10/2022 10:11

If I were the head of the 1922 committee, this is what I'd do.

Give Truss three options.
A) Stand down tearfully to nurse your husband through a suddenly discovered private and serious health crisis.
B) Ditch Kwarteng, throw him to the wolves, putting all the blame on him. Hire Sunak and Gove as Chancellor and Home Secretary and do exactly what they tell you to do. Don't even breathe without running it past them. Lock Mogg in a cupboard.
C) Get unceremoniously ditched.

Option B still won't win them the next election, thank god, but it would keep more of them in their jobs than any other plan I can think of.

CapMarvel · 14/10/2022 10:13

The tories are imploding and it's fucking glorious to see.

I don't think Truss will be PM by the end of the year and what should happen is a general election. That would involve some tory MPs having an ounce of integrity though.

NotQuiteUsual · 14/10/2022 10:13

Normal people play parcel the parcel. Tories play pass the country.

Sunak and Mordor would be far worse!

What does “worse” look like I wonder?

SleeplessInEngland · 14/10/2022 10:15

She's going to u-turn on the budget, probably fire Kwarteng, and hope for the best.

It won't be enough. But Labour would love her to stay.

FatKyle · 14/10/2022 10:16

sorrynotathome · 14/10/2022 08:23

It is totally unfathomable why the Tory party had voted her in instead of Sunak, who at least has some semblance of common sense about him.

She won the vote because she is white.

She won the vote because Rishi is untrustworthy.

FallopianTubeTrain · 14/10/2022 10:17

greenhousegal · 14/10/2022 08:03

Boris Johnson is on the way back as predicted.

The leader should be chosen by elected reps no one else, and a three month wait for the shire folk to decide has to change stat.

I was in a meeting with a Tory peer recently and they were saying that the fear around booting Truss is that they may well end up with Boris back.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 14/10/2022 10:18

And that was all Boris' work. He started fitting rid of anyone halfway competent, who could challenge him, even before he was PM.

The key to understanding what is happening now is to realise the old Tory party has been sunk.

Moderate, sensible politicians (even if I rarely agreed with them) have been replaced by sycophants and fools, sponsored by UKIP, BNP and EDL factions and the super wealthy (see Suella Braverman's admission that they sold Golden Vias to Russians as an example).

The Party needs taking back in hand and these factions need removing from influence. Until then, chaos will reign.

We have seen in the past month that there is worse than Boris about!

I don't know who is more dangerous: the devil or the fool that opens the door and invites him in, tbh.

Everything happening now has its foundations in Cameron and Johnson's premierships. Maybe even May's.

Its quite likely Truss and Kwarteng did what they did as part of some sort of insider trading arrangement.

No other explanation fits with their disastrous mini budget - none of it makes any sense otherwise, they even sacked the Treasury chief advisor to avoid scrutiny.

The amounts they will gain from their city friends is going to be huge, far out weighing any pension but of course she will accept it, these people are all beyond greedy, Cameron took DLA and claimed for basic office stationary, despite being a multi millionaire.

millymog11 · 14/10/2022 10:21

No.

LT will continue at least until the next election and there is a good chance she will win that.

Boris Johnson lasted 3 years and 44 days. What has changed to the key voters since then which means it will be any different this time around?

Creasedlinen · 14/10/2022 10:22

Rushi seems like a good candidate next to Truss, but really after all the personal tax business and arguing that his wife (and therefore presumably him and their family) is only temporarily resident? He'd be a terrible candidate if there was a decent field.
