Newspaper reports as scathing as ever, and The Times suggesting Tories are lining up Sunak and Mordaunt as a duo.

can’t stand the woman but surely she’ll hold on for a bit longer - everyone was saying Boris would go much earlier than he did. And why on earth did they vote her into power in the first place 🙄

Let's all blame Gordon Brown
If the conservatives knew that this was going to be a huge problem they had 12 years to reverse things or sort it out.

Here's a thought though.

The City of London was famously light touch on regulation throughout the 00s, which came back to bite pretty hard during the GFC.

And regarding that Mark Carney quote: bear in mind that the UK economy was less than 90% of Germany's after the GFC. Probably more like 70% in fact. It recovered, but then fell back after 2016 well before Brexit actually happened.

Ha ha keep flogging that dead horse, the whole country can now see what a disaster the Tories are when it comes to the economy and public services (or on any other measure you care to mention)

I agree the Tories have been disastrous, but my point is that Blair/Brown were disastrous too, but as they created an illusionary "boom" (based on borrowed money and spending), people didn't notice at the time.

Good to know that however shit Labour is after winning the next election it’ll have 12-14 years of blaming the last lot before it has to start trying. That’s a sweet cushion.

Well Brown and Blair spent 12 years blaming the Tories!

Problems with Brexit are all down to the EU which does not forgive the UK leaving and taking away a great chunk of the gravy train as well as flagging up the intended united states of Europe idea that Jean Monet was proposing in the 1950s should be done stealthily so that the people of Europe did not notice until it was too late (it's never too late for an empire to disintegrate but I don't think history was Monet's bag).

Very good, @Grammarnut satire is I see alive and well.

Presumably for the past 12 years the Conservatives have not borrowed money and spent it, because until last month they did not want growth?

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 10:48

Maybe it's really time for a brand new political party to emerge, one not tainted by the others and who doesn't keep blaming other people.
The same old arguments go round and round : I was watching QT last week about a Scottish referendum and that went on and on too and will never be resolved , a lot like the Brexit arguments and who was in charge over a decade ago and just all of it really.
Nobody ever seems to do anything that actually benefits the people either do they ?
Plus many don't understand the markets or fiscal policies or tax affairs enough to really drill down into why it's all gone wrong
I certainly don't and I try and keep up with the news and read things etc , but I don't understand it all fully.
More austerity coming out way is depressing.

greenhousegal · 17/10/2022 11:24

I'm reading on breaking news alert that nearly ALL tax measures introduced last week have now been reversed. More to follow I suppose.

citroenpresse · 17/10/2022 11:30

Wondering if Truss is going to last 17 more minutes! Is she really going to sit next to Hunt while he announces the complete destruction of her economic plan?

MarshaBradyo · 17/10/2022 11:31

I just can’t see her doing PMQs and might be better to not have her do it for her own sake

greenhousegal · 17/10/2022 11:34

Positive covid test incoming in time for PMQs if she has any sense. I wonder if she is too thick to resign.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 17/10/2022 11:35

Hope she does though, we could all use the laugh. It could be even worse than Johnson's last one, which was pretty epic.

So,PMQs is Wednesday. Sir 1922 Committee Graham Brady is now back from Greece to peruse the 100s (apparently) of no confidence letters. Ongoing discussions about whose turn to be Tory leader it is next. Maybe they'll do a parliamentary partners WhatsApp...

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 17/10/2022 11:37

I hope she's smarting greatly with all the humiliation.

I presume she'll get a PM's pension? Not a bad little earner for a few weeks in the job.

she's not very deft with responses even when she's full of bravado so I'd imagine her motherboard will fully malfunction if she does PMQ's in these circs.

Blossomtoes · 17/10/2022 11:47

Of course they did. Who decimated public services for 18 years? The fairies? Blaming Brown for the shitshow that started the moment Kwarteng got to his feet on 23 September - and is now calming down - is risible.

Presumably its Brown's fault that when he left office one could see a GP within 48 hours, but 12 years later it is now an aspirational target to see one half a month later.

We've had crap political leaders for decades. Tories are no worse than Labour. We desperately need a new political party, as we can't go on swinging from one colour of incompetents to another colour.

Although I absolutely hated the coalition and the damage it did, I am coming around to the idea of moving forward with coalitions as at least a different party having "some" measure of scrutiny/control to water down the more ridiculous party decisions has to be better that the shit show we've endured for the past few decades.

I can say with 100% certainty that not everyone could get to see a GP within 48 hours back in 2010. My mother and FIL were both suffering with serious health issues in the late noughties and had no end of trouble accessing GP services and also endured long delays in A&E, days/weeks languishing on hospital wards deteriorating with poor care, etc. It wasn't the utopia that people with rose coloured glasses seem to think it was.

urbanbuddha · 17/10/2022 11:53

When they made their terrible tax cut speech, were there hundreds of civil servants in Westminster going 'What ?? FFS !!'

They absolutely were. From the moment they sacked Tom Scholar, the highly competent top official at the Treasury, there was alarm and despondency.

Grammarnut · 17/10/2022 11:54

Yes, maybe. But did you want to be subsumed into a United States of Europe run by France (which is trashing us) and Germany?

Maggiethecat · 17/10/2022 12:03

Having just listened to JH her days are well and truly done.

There’s no way that she can survive when the policies on which she stood during the leadership campaign have all been canned.

To see her stand up at PMQs and try to defend her position would add insult to injury.

Since the plural of ancedote is evidence, in 2010 I was bitten by a dog, my GP saw me within an hour.
