Newspaper reports as scathing as ever, and The Times suggesting Tories are lining up Sunak and Mordaunt as a duo.

can’t stand the woman but surely she’ll hold on for a bit longer - everyone was saying Boris would go much earlier than he did. And why on earth did they vote her into power in the first place 🙄

SARAH VINE: Why couldn’t Liz Truss just say something human, from the heart? What a missed opportunity

err maybe she hasn't got one.

In fact, the sacking was even more brutal than it appeared. Truss decided to dismiss Kwarteng hours earlier, contacting his successor, Jeremy Hunt, at 9.30am to offer him the job while he was on holiday with his wife in Belgium.
Hunt asked for a moment to think about it before calling back and accepting. Truss said she wanted their relationship to be similar to that of David Cameron and George Osborne, based on trust and mutual respect. Hunt said that was the only way it could work.

Does every Tory get a turn? Will it be Fabricant and Francois after Sunak?

This country is a fucking shit show.

Oh good, please not JRM. I couldn’t bear it.

Eeksteek · 14/10/2022 23:49

Oh, God, I mean. NOT Oh, Good. Not even ironically.

Wow. The arrogance of that woman is astounding! The last sentence in that article is fucking brilliant for its hilarity!

Does anyone remember this meeting between her and Lavrov? “It’s like talking to a deaf person, who is here but does not hear”

Lavrov had up close experience with what we’ve been seeing of her over the past few months - the programmed script, vacant expression.

The cynic in me thinks that this was not missed or overlooked by people in the party but rather that she was chosen to be their muppet.

Kwasi Kwarteng flew back to UK not knowing he was out
Liz Truss lined up a successor at the Treasury before she fired her chancellor. He found out by reading The Times😂

He must be more stupid than even his budget suggests if he had not realised he was leaving, everyone else knew.

WhyCantNameLastMoreThanDay · 14/10/2022 21:18

because that is the profile of the majority of voting members

The poster I was responding to implied - well, used the word - 'racism' to explain why the Conservative membership voted for Truss over Sunak and presumably Badenoch.

I really don't think that's the case at all. While there was a flurry of interest in Badenoch, she had no experience of the main offices of state, unlike Truss and Sunak, (and Johnson, Hunt and May in previous contests) and would have been a gamble. Sunak was tainted by association with Boris and also the scandal around his wife's tax status. The truth is that there was no outstanding candidate. Truss was the default option, I cannot see racism in it. Are Labour also racist and is their membership majority old white male, because they have never had a female or non-white leader!

ClaudineClare · 15/10/2022 07:53

I think racism did play a part. There are definitely Tory party members out there who are horribly racist and would never vote for a black or brown person. Johnson is a backstabber too and a bigot to boot. The members happily voted him in as leader, though.

A bit off topic, but call me Dave is not very good at reading the room, is he? Tweeting in praise of million pound flats while half the country worries about paying the fuel bill. Not to mention it's partly his fault we've ended up with UKIP ruining running the country.

Agreed but it is a lovely project albeit a super luxury one on my to-do list to have a look around inside.

I don't think that's out of line for a Conservative Prime Minister. Battersea Power Station was literally rotting in a wasteland when he came to power, and it's reopening today as the centrepiece of a really attractive development which has driven loads of economic activity, has thousands of homes and two new tube stations.

As a Labour voter I strongly deprecate the very low level of affordable or council housing involved in the project, and suspect that all too many of the flats may have been bought as investments to be left empty (I hope they get burned by a run on the pound), but from Cameron's perspective I can see why he's proud of its opening day.

SilverPeacock · 15/10/2022 09:43

She seems to have taken an approach to change management that every Junior Manager on Leadership 101 knows you should never do. I can’t understand it.

pointythings · 15/10/2022 09:45

@jennakong ah, the point about how racist and non-diverse the Labour party is. Although they have not had a female leader (but several female deputies and senior ministers when in power), they are more diverse than the parliamentary conservative party. About 6% of conservative MPs are from an ethnically diverse background. For Labour that is 25%.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 15/10/2022 09:57

Labour have had two female interim leaders too, Margaret Beckett and Harriet Harman.

I did he trolled her with a false fact to smoke her out her lack of knowledge.

Benjispruce4 · 15/10/2022 10:16

She seems totally out of her depth. I actually feel a bit sorry for her and I’m not a Tory voter. I think she put her hat in the ring and didn’t expect to be chosen to be PM then the Queen and all this mess. What a nightmare!

Maggiethecat · 15/10/2022 10:28

Just saw yesterday’s press con again and it reminded me of a 17 year old’s speech for head girl. Minus any enthusiasm or charisma

vera99 · 15/10/2022 10:29

She looked like she was about to burst into tears at the end, but sympathy have I not.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/10/2022 10:29

I’m one of those people who can’t watch the audition parts of X factor when people come on who think they can sing but they can’t and everyone is sniggering at them. Seeing Liz Truss doing a press conference makes me cringe in exactly the same way. Someone so completely out of their depth and deluded about their own ability. Just awful and embarrassing. Not that I feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for the country.

Maggiethecat · 15/10/2022 10:35

Initially MPs did not significantly support her, presumably they were aware of her shortcomings. But it’s disturbing how many from failed candidates’ camp fell behind her which would have boosted her chances with Tory members.
