Newspaper reports as scathing as ever, and The Times suggesting Tories are lining up Sunak and Mordaunt as a duo.

can’t stand the woman but surely she’ll hold on for a bit longer - everyone was saying Boris would go much earlier than he did. And why on earth did they vote her into power in the first place 🙄

Because they're the ones who have joined the tory party membership.

Anyone can pay the fee and become a member so it is theoretically possible that you could persuade a million tradional labour/lib dem/SNP/Green voters to join the tory Party officially and force change from the inside.

That might be the way to go actually, especially if they won't call an election, but I just don't know if I could ever bring myself to put money into a tory pocket.

@Thebestwaytoscareatory they’ll be wise to that though. If loads of people join from now on, and they call another leadership race where party members are eligible to vote, I imagine they’ll have some sort of rule saying only party members who joined before X date (say, 3 months ago) are eligible to vote. They may be terrible but they’re a wily old bunch 🤣

citroenpresse · 14/10/2022 18:20

ClaudineClare That information about the Tory membership is guesswork by the FT...Conservatives don't provide information to the Electoral Commission on membership, unlike every other party (see the House of Commons Library data - updated in August 2022). Are there 140K or 190k? None of the media agreed though several outlets (maybe even ConservativeHome?) raised security issues related to the procedures including online voting.

citroenpresse · 14/10/2022 18:23

Well not 'guesswork' - they were citing an academic paper from 5 years ago?

theworldhas · 14/10/2022 18:29

Truss can’t carry on and it’s surely at this stage ridiculous and immoral for yet another Conservative members only PM election to take place.

The only decent moral solution is they have a leader election AND call a general election for early next year.

They already have a time limit. To vote, you must be a member when the Chairman of the 1922 Committee calls for nominations and you must have been a member for at least 3 months by the date the ballot closes. So, in the election this year, only those who were members on 2nd June could vote as the ballot closed on 2nd September.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 14/10/2022 19:04

@sorrynotathome Agreed. Stevie Wonder could see that¡

So if we all join now, we'll just about be in time to vote for the leader after the leader after Truss.

Given how short their shelf lives are.

prh47bridge I considered joining in late May to vote for a post Johnson PM once it became clear that he was unlikely to be leading us into a GE. I'm relieved that I didn't bother though as I wouldn't have willingly chosen Sunak or Truss, although would have voted Rishi instead of lunacy I suppose.

I have a feeling that they will change the rules back to MPs only now though so no point in joining and giving the conservatives undeserved financial support.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 14/10/2022 20:37

You could make it your business to cause more trouble than you're worth!

But I think it's moot, because they're not going to be thick enough to let the party membership choose the next leader again for a while. As and when Truss is removed, the new leader will emerge from a smoke filled backroom or whatever the old adage is.

I joined briefly in January because I wanted to go to a party during lockdown (I lasted 6 weeks), but I'm still on their mailing list so I get all the inside info.

And you would not believe the bollocks they send!
It's actually worth the 2.99 lol

Lull them into a false sense of security?

I'm pretty sure a lot of their money is laundered through their party shop though.

This was from a couple of days ago. A real, genuine fucking email.

Beth Rigby reporting 'A substantial amount of no confidence letters' have gone in to Graham Brady.

Who is apparently away in Greece!

jennakong · 14/10/2022 16:09

Why, are 'rich old white blokes' the only ones with a vote? Even in the Tory party?

because that is the profile of the majority of voting members

HRTQueen · 14/10/2022 21:20

I think she will be out soon

I’m sure a number of party members who voted for her are regretting their decision

Along will come a Tory saviour who won’t fair quite so badly come the next election

BirmaBrite · 14/10/2022 21:20

Who is apparently away in Greece!

Is that a euphemism or is he on holiday ?

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2022 21:21

Graham Brady looks up tomorrow from his sunbed in Greece and mouths to his companion
' not again ! '
People start tracking his flight on the app and the whole merry go round sets off again

aboutanidiot · 14/10/2022 23:10

This is a direct quote from a speech which ended my 5 week membership of the Tory party. The speech is very long, but this was the sentence that told me that no matter how good of a party they threw, I couldn't condone these people. I may have written an email even lengthier than the offending speech as I flounced

It was made in Washington by the then Chairman of the Conservative Party (possibly still is).

We have made it clear to schools…
… that it is illegal to teach the concept of “white privilege”…
… as though it were undisputed fact.

Full speech here

www.conservatives.com/news/2022/standing-up-for-our-values

Make no mistake about it. This party is very very white privilege.

Kwasi Kwarteng flew back to UK not knowing he was out
Liz Truss lined up a successor at the Treasury before she fired her chancellor. He found out by reading The Times😂
